Οι φωτογραφίες δεν είναι δικές μου αλλά ανήκουν στον Γιώργο Ζούμπο και μπορείτε να τις βρείτε στο ενδιαφέρον ιστολόγιο του – τον ευχαριστώ για την άδεια αναδημοσίευσης. Επειδή όμως είναι ελαφρώς δύσκολο να εντοπιστούν ανάμεσα στις άλλες τις συγκέντρωσα και τις ανεβάζω εδώ. Με την σειρά θα δείτε τον Σάμη Βιτάλ να ψέλνει, παλιές φωτογραφίες της εβραϊκής συνοικίας συμπεριλαμβανομένης και μιας σπάνιας μετά από τους βομβαρδισμούς, 3 κετουμπά (γαμήλια συμβόλαια) και μια φωτογραφία από το εσωτερικό της Συναγωγής
The photos aren’t mine but are part of the personal record of Yorgos Zoubos and you can find them in his interesting blog – I thank him for permission to reproduce them here. Only because they are hard to locate I also publish them here; so here are some rare photos of the Jewish quarter in the 30’s plus one showing the destruction by the bombings, one with Sam Vital chanting,3 kettubot (marriage contracts) and one from the interior of the Synagogue.

Nice pictures. I particularly like the pictures of the kafenio; the tall, apartment building characteristic of Corfu; and the mother and two children in the sokaki (Quartier Juif). Do you know anything about the picture of the ruins? I was in Corfu a few years ago and took some pictures of the Synangogue – a very simple but elegant building, built probably in the tradition of a style that was not meant to “announce loudly” the presence of Jews. By the way, I know of three important Corfiote Jews: Giulio Caïmi (Michel Fais has done extensive research on him), Georges Moustaki (www.rfimusique.com/siteen/biographie/biographie_6170.asp) and the novelist Albert Cohen.

My family used to live just next to Ovriaki (Οβριακή, η Τζουντέκα των Χανίων). My grandma still remembers the little Jewish girl she used to play with up till May the 20th 1944 when Jews were detained (later deported) and their houses pillaged.
