Ενα Σέφερ Τορά/source:wikipedia

Με το τέλος του Σουκώτ έρχεται η γιορτή της Σιμχά Τορά που στα ελληνικά αποδίδεται ως η γιορτή της Χαράς της Τορά, (Τορά ονομάζεται η Πεντάτευχος και πάνω κάτω αντιστοιχεί στην σε αυτό που οι Χριστιανοί ονομάζουν Παλαιά Διαθήκη). Στη Σιμχά Τορά γιορτάζουμε το τέλος του ετήσιου κύκλου ανάγνωσης της Τορά που διαιρείται σε 52-54 εβδομαδιαία κομμάτια, (περασσά), που διαβάζονται κάθε βδομάδα στην Συναγωγή. Η ανάγνωση του τελευταίου κομματιού αποτελεί την αφορμή για μια μεγάλη γιορτή στην συναγωγή.

Οπως ξέρουμε η συμμετοχή στην ίδια την λειτουργία δεν αποτελεί αποκλειστικότητα του ραβίνου όπως ο ιερέας που ηγείται στην χριστιανική ορθόδοξη τελετουργία, αλλά ο κάθε εβραίος συμμετέχει ατομικά και μπορεί να τελέσει αυτός την όποια λειτουργία. Έτσι στην Ελλάδα υπάρχει το έθιμο για την Σιμχά Τορά να διαλέγονται δύο άτομα, συνήθως νιόπαντροι, που ο ένας ονομάζεται Χατάν Τορά δηλαδή γαμπρός της Τορά που διαβάζει το τελευταίο κεφάλαιο και ο άλλος Χατάν Μπερεσίτ δηλαδή γαμπρός της Γέννεσης που είναι το πρώτο κεφάλαιο.

Κατά την διάρκεια της τελετής οι κύλινδροι της Τορά, (αυτοί στην φωτογραφία αριστερά και που ονομάζονται Σέφερ Τορά), περιφέρονται 7 φορές γύρω από την Συναγωγή (οι λεγόμενες ακαφότ) και συχνά περνάνε κάτω από μια χουπά γιατί ο δεσμός του εβραϊκού λαού με την Τορά παρομοιάζεται με τον γάμο. Αυτό όμως που δεν γίνεται εύκολα αντιληπτό είναι οτι αυτές οι περιφορές δεν γίνονται σε κλίμα αυστηρό ή έστω σοβαρό. Η πρώτη περιφορά γίνεται από τους δύο Χατάν ενώ ολόκληρος ο κόσμος στην συναγωγή τραγουδά και χορεύει. Ακόμα και στις πιο λιτές συγκεντρώσεις ο θόρυβος από τα τραγούδια ακούγεται ως έξω, ενώ στο παρελθόν ήταν μια πρώτης τάξεως ευκαιρία για να καταναλωθούν σημαντικές ποσότητες από ρακί. Μάλιστα ορισμένες συναγωγές, που οφείλουμε να θυμόμαστε αποτελούσαν έναν ημιαυτόνομο μικρόκοσμο, όπως η Συναγωγή Σιτσίλια στην Θεσσαλονίκη το είχαν θεσμοθετήσει και αμέσως μετά την ανάγνωση του τελευταίου κομματιού ένα μπουκάλι ρακί περνούσε από χέρι σε χέρι και ο καθένας έπινε από μια γουλιά, ενώ μετά τους προσφέρονταν από λίγο απόσταγμα κανέλας για να αρωματίσουν τα μαντήλια τους σε ανάμνηση της χαράς και ευωδίας που προκαλεί το ξεκίνημα ανάγνωσης της Τορά από την αρχή.

Μετά τους χατάν τις υπόλοιπες περιφορές τις κάνουν τα μικρότερα παιδιά τα οποία δέχονται άγρια κακοποίηση από τους ηλικιωμένους που παρευρίσκονται υπό μορφή τσιμπημάτων των μάγουλων ή ανακατώματος των μαλλιών καθώς περνάνε μέσα στα τραγούδια και τον χορό, (ο γραφών έχει παιδικά τραύματα όπως φαντάζεστε). Όπως είπαμε τα τραγούδια συνεχίζουν ακάθεκτα, ενώ σε μερικές συναγωγές τους ραίνουν με ροδοπέταλα, (ιδιαίτερα αν υπάρχει γυναικωνίτης σε όροφο όπως έχω δει στην Συναγωγή Μοναστηριωτών στην Θεσσαλονίκη και που αποτελεί ένα επιβλητικό θέαμα μαζί με την ιδιαίτερη ακουστική της), ή παλαιότερα με γλυκά. Η φωτογραφία δεξιά αν και προέρχεται από μια διαφορετική περίσταση, τα εγκαίνια της Συναγωγής Μπετ Ελ στο εβραϊκό γηροκομείο Ρέστειον στην Αθήνα, είναι άκρως ενδεικτική της όλης ατμόσφαιρας.

Η κάθε συναγωγή είχε τα δικά της έθιμα, πχ η Συναγωγή Εβόρα στην Θεσσαλονίκη συνήθιζε να ετοιμάζει μια μεγάλη ποσότητα από ρύζι το οποίο το πετούσε στους χατάν φωνάζοντας “αρρόζ” γιατί το παρατσούκλι της συναγωγής ήταν “ρύζι”. Μερικά από αυτά έχουν αφεθεί, ενώ άλλα νέα έχουν δημιουργηθεί. Στην Αθήνα στην συναγωγή της οδού Μελιδώνη σήμερα συνηθίζουν να μοιράζουν μεγάλες λαμπάδες που δημιουργούν μια φανταστική ατμόσφαιρα στο εξωτερικό της συναγωγής από τους εκατοντάδες εβραίους που μαζεύονται για να τραγουδήσουν. Παλαιότερα συνηθίζονταν να γίνεται μια πομπή που συνόδευε τους χατανίμ σπίτι, εν μέσω τραγουδιών και γέλιων – για ευνόητους λόγους αυτό το έθιμο έχει ατονήσει σήμερα.

Με την Σιμχά Τορά συνδέεται και το έθιμο στην Θεσσαλονίκη, οτι κάθε συναγωγή είχε το δικό της παρατσούκλι το οποίο έπαιζε μεγάλο ρόλο κατά την διάρκεια αλλά και μετά τη γιορτή. Το παρατσούκλι αυτό δεν είχε σχέση με άλλα παρατσούκλια του υπόλοιπου χρόνου αλλά σχετίζονταν ειδικά με την γιορτή, πχ η παλαιότερη συναγωγή της Θεσσαλονίκης που είχε ιδρυθεί τον 1ο αιώνα προ Κοινής Εποχής, στην γωνία Καλαποθάκη και Δημοσθένους, ονομάζεται Ετς αΧαίμ και την αποκαλούσαν οι υπόλοιποι εβραίοι κααλ δε λος γρέγος, δηλαδή συναγωγή των ελλήνων γιατί ανήκε στους ρωμανιώτες εβραίους. Το παρατσούκλι της όμως για το Σιμχάτ Τορά ήταν Ajo, δηλαδή σκόρδο γιατί υποτίθεται το αγαπούσαν ιδιαίτερα τα μέλη της.

Τα παρατσούκλια είχαν διάφορες προελεύσεις: τα μέλη της Μαγιόρ που βρισκόνταν γωνία Βενιζέλου με Τσιμισκή και είχε ιδρυθεί το 1492 ονομάζονταν ladron, δηλαδή κλέφτες. Αφορμή ήταν ο ανάγλυφος πύργος στο ιερό της συναγωγής που απεικόνιζε τον θυρεό των Τόρρες που ήταν οι προύχοντες της συναγωγής και διέθετε ένα πύργο που ανήκε στο οπλοστάσιο της Πάλμα, πρωτεύουσας της Μαγιόρκα από όπου κατάγονταν. Ο πύργος αυτός θύμιζε τους πύργους στο Γεντί Κουλέ όπου έκλειναν τους φυλακισμένους και από εκεί το όνομα. Τα μέλη της Προβένσια που ιδρύθηκε το 1394 από πρόσφυγες από την Προβηγκία ονομάζονταν proves, δηλαδή φτωχοί και αποτελούσε παραφθορά του ονόματος τους. Η συναγωγή Ιτάλια ιδρύθηκε μεταξύ του 1423 και 1492 και λόγω μεγέθους διαιρέθηκε στην Ιτάλια Γιασάν και Ιτάλια Χαντάς – η πρώτη βρίσκονταν στην σημερινή Πλατεία Αριστοτέλους που ονομάζονταν τότε Madrezika del Agua όπως σωστά μας πληροφορεί ο Ν.Γενημάκης, ενώ η δεύτερη στην γωνία Κ.Ντίλ (τότε ονομάζονταν Kucuk Italia Havrasi) και Βασ.Ηρακλείου (Haham Matalon) – ενώ σήμερα μπορείτε να την βρείτε στην οδό Βελισσαρίου στην φωτογραφία δεξιά. Το παρατσούκλι και τον δυο όμως ήταν raton, δηλαδή ποντίκι και τους έφερνε σε ευθεία αντιπαράθεση με τους θανάσιμους εχθρούς τους: την Συναγωγή Αραγόν που ήταν οι gato, αναφορά στην οικογένεια Γκατένιο που ήταν η καρδιά της συναγωγής. Ετσι λοιπόν όταν παρέες από την Ιτάλια Γιασάν περνούσαν μπροστά από τις πομπές της Αραγόν, πειράγματα εκτοξεύονταν από τις δυο παρατάξεις: Huid ratones que nosotros los gatos os vamos a tragar – Τρέξτε ποντίκια γιατί εμείς οι γάτοι θα σας κάνουμε μια χαψιά !

Οι συναγωγές της Θεσσαλονίκης ήταν δεκάδες και είναι δύσκολο να αναφέρω όλα τα παρατσούκλια: θα περιοριστώ στην συναγωγή των Ασκεναζίτων Ασκενάζ που γενικώς την αποκαλούσαν κααλ δε λος λόκος (συναγωγή των τρελών) αλλά για το Σιμχά Τορά υιοθετούσαν το mosca (μύγα) πιθανότητα αναφερόμενοι την καταγωγή από την Μόσχα. Τα μέλη της Συναγωγής Πούλια ονομάζονταν macarron ενδεικτικό της διαχρονικής σχέσης των ιταλών με το συγκεκριμένο έδεσμα, ενώ παρά την μεγάλη περηφάνια των μελών της Οτραντο το όνομα τους ήταν gallo γιατί θεωρούνταν φιλέριδες που αποτυπώνεται και στο παρατσούκλι κάαλ δε λος καμπάνταϊς (καπάνταης είναι ο κουτσαβάκης στα τούρκικα). Η Καταλάν, στην γωνία Αγ.Σοφίας και Καστριτσίου, ονομάζονταν figo λόγω της παρουσίας συκιών δίπλα από την πόρτα της συναγωγής, αν και επιτήδειοι την αποκαλούσαν figo loco λόγω της ισχυρογνωμοσύνης των μελών της. Η Νεβέ Σεντέκ στην Φράγκων είχε το όνομα huerno λόγω της παρουσίας ενός μεγάλου κέρατος στον τοίχο ενάντια στο κακό μάτι. H Γκερούς Σεφαράντ, ίσως η σημαντικότερη ιστορικά λόγω της σύνδεσης της με δυο ογκόλιθους της παγκόσμιας εβραϊκής θρησκείας τον Σαμουέλ ντι Μεδίνα και τον Ιωσέφ Κάρο, βρισκόταν στο Καπάνι από το 1492 και το παρατσούκλι της ήταν mescita, δηλαδή μιναρές.

Και με αυτά: Χαγκ Σαμέαχ – Χαρούμενη Γιορτή!

Σημείωμα για μελλοντικές αναρτήσεις: η ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία της συναγωγής Ιτάλια Γιασάν, ο εβραϊκός γάμος μιας και αναφέρθηκα στην χουπά, τα προστατευτικά των σεφερ τορά που είναι προνομιούχος τομέας της εβραϊκής τέχνης και ο ισχυρισμός οτι οι εβραίοι της Θεσσαλονίκης έφεραν το ρακί στον ελλαδικό χώρο, (argos beware)…

With the end of Sukkot the feast of Simcha Torah comes along which can be freely translated as the feast of the Joy of the Torah, (where Torah is the Pentateuch which is approximately what Christians refer to as the Old Testament). In Simcha Torah we celebrate the end of the yearly circle of the Torah reading, which is divιded in 52-54 segments called perasha and are publicly read each week in the synagogue. The reading of the last part is cause for a great celebration in the temple.

As we know the participation in the Jewish rituals are not limited to the rabbi as in Christian rituals the priest leading the congregation; instead each Jew is participating on his own and he may conduct the service himself. So in Greece we have the custom of picking two people for the ceremony, usually newlyweds during the past year; the first is called Hatan Torah, the groom of the Torah and he reads the last chapter, while the other one is called Hatan Beresheet where Beresheet being the hebrew name for the first chapter of Genesis.

During this ceremony the cylinders of the Torah, (those on the picture to your left and called Sefer Torah), are being carried around the synagogue for 7 times, (the akaphot) and often they pass under a chuppa because the bond of the Jewish people with the Torah is often compared to a wedding. The thing that may not be clear though is that these passages are not done in a serious or even austere climate. The first revolution is done by the two Hatanim while the whole congregation sings and dances. Even in the most spartan gatherings the sound of the songs can be heard from the outside and in the past it was a prime opportunity to down significants amounts of raki. Some congregations had even introduced this to their minhag like the Sicilia Synagogue in Salonica where after the last chapter a bottle of raki passed among the faithful for a sip and then some cinnamon essence was used to dampen the handkerchiefs as to remind of the joy and sweet fragrance produced when beginning to read the Torah from the start.

After the hatanim the other six akkafot are performed by the youngest children who are brutally illtreated by the elderly with violent peckings of the  cheeks or messing of the hair, (the writer does foster child traumas as you can imagine). As we said the singing continues while in some synagogues they are  sprinkled with rose petals, (especially if there is a women’s loft as I saw in the Monastirioton Synagogue in Salonica coupled with it’s special acoustics), or with sweets in the older times. The photo in the right although from a different occasion, the opening of the new synagogue Beth El in the Jewish Restion Elders’ Home in Athens, is indicative of the climate reigning.

Each synagogue had it’s own customs, eg the Evora Synagogue prepared a huge amount of rice which would be thrown by the people to the hatanim shouting arroz which was the nickname of the the synagogue.  Some of these have been forgotten while new ones have emerged: in Athens in the Synagogue of Melidoni Street they hand out huge candles which create a fantastic atmosphere in the exterior of the synagogue as hundreds of Jews gathered to sing. It was customary to accompany the hatanim home after the feast but this custom has been, understandably, abandoned nowadays.

The custom that each synagogue in Salonica had its own nickname was linked to the Simcha Torah and this played a major role during and after the celebrations. This nickname had nothing to do with the usual nicknames which were frequent during the rest of the year but were specifically linked to the Simcha Torah. For example the Etz aChaim Synagogue, the oldest in Salonica since it was founded in the 1st century BCE in the corner of Kalapothaki and Dimosthenous Streets, was called by the rest of the Jewish population Qaal de los Griegos because it was the congregation of the greek speaking Romaniote Jews. It’s nickname during the Simcha Torah though was Ajo because the members were presumably especially fond of garlic.

The nicknames had many origins: the Mayor Synagogue members in the angle between Venizelou and Tsimiski Street founded in 1492 were called ladron, ie thieves. The occasion was the tower in relief over the echal of the synagogue which depicted the Torres family shield which was an eminent family of the congregation. The tower was reminiscent of the Palma de Mayorca arsenal from which most families originated and reminded of the Yedi Kule Towers in Salonica where the prisoners were kept, ergo the nickname. The Provencia Synagogue founded in 1394 by Provence, France refugees had it’s members called proves, ie poor as a  corruption of their name. The Italia Synagogue was founded between 1423 and 1492 and because of its size divided into Italia Yashan and Italia Hadash – the fist one was found in the contemporary Aristotle Square which was then called Madrezika del Agua as N.Genimakis correctly informs us, while the second could be found in C.Diehl Str, (then Kucuk Italia Havrasi) and Vasileos Irakliou (then Haham Matalon Str). Later the Italia Yashan Synagogue was moved to Velisariou Str and you can see it in the photo in your right. The nickname of both was raton, ie mouse and their mortal enemies were the Aragon Synagogue which were the gato, a reference to the important family of the Gattegno. So when companies for the Italia Yashan synagogue passed before the Aragon companies jokes were heard from both sides: Huid ratones que nosotros los gatos os vamos a tragar – Run mice because us the cats will make a mouthful of you !

The Salonica synagogues were counted buy the dozens and it’s hard to mention them and their nicknames: I’ll limit myself the the single Ashkenazi synagogue called Ashkenaz which may have been known as Qaal de los locos (congegation of the crazy ones) but for Simcha Torah were known as mosca (fly), probably an allusion the origins from Moscow. The Puglia Synagogue’s members were known as macarron, indicative of the timeless bond of the italians with pasta, while despite the self pride of the Otranto Synagogue’s members they were known as gallo because of their feisty character which earned them also the Qaal del los kabadayis (kabadayis is turkish for toughie) nickname the rest of the year. Catalan Synagogue in the angle of St.Sophia and Kastritsiu str. was called figo because of the fig plants near the entrance, although often called figo loco because of the stubbornness of its members. Newe Sedeq Synagogue in Frangon Str. was called huerno because of a big horn nailed in the walls of the synagogue to guard from the evil eye. The first sephardic synagogue to be founded was Gerush Sefarad Synagogue, maybe the most important in history because of its connection to two giants of Jewish religion Samuel di Medina del Campo and Yosef Karo, was found in the Kapani market since 1492 and was called mescita, ie minaret.

A small note for future posts: the interesting story of the Italia Yashan Synagogue, the Jewish wedding since I spoke of the chuppa, the Sefer Torah containers which are a privileged area of Jewish art and an explanation of the connection of the Jews to the raki which I believe argos shall find interesting.

Διμοιρίες των ΜΑΤ έξω από συναγωγές, συσκέψεις σε εβραϊκά σχολεία – ενώ συναγωγές, νεκροταφεία και μνημεία γινόντουσαν στόχος βανδαλισμών και εμπρησμών. Αυτή ήταν η εικόνα που παρουσίαζε ο Ελληνικός Εβραϊσμός τους μήνες Δεκέμβριο και Ιανουάριο όταν το σύνολο της ελληνικής κοινωνίας αποφάσισε ότι ο καλύτερος τρόπος να στηρίξει τους «αγωνιστές της Χαμάς» (η γνωστή αντισημιτική εφημερίδα Αυριανή, 29/12/08) ήταν να ξεσπάσουν ενάντια στους έλληνες συμπολίτες που γεννήθηκαν με την λάθος θρησκεία. Αν και το είχα γράψει από μήνες είχα αποφασίσει να μην το δημοσιεύσω αλλά η πεποίθηση οτι στην Ελλάδα ο αντισημιτισμός περιορίζεται στο ΛάΟΣ του Γ.Καρατζαφέρη ή είναι μόνο λόγια οφείλει να αντιμετωπίσει τα γεγονότα.

Βίαια αντισημιτικά γεγονότα συνέβησαν 9 ελληνικές πόλεις: σε Αθήνα, Θεσσαλονίκη, Λάρισα, Βόλο, Ιωάννινα, Κέρκυρα αλλά και σε judenrein πόλεις όπως Κομοτηνή, Βέροια και Δράμα. Σε πανελλήνιο επίπεδο είδαμε εξοργιστικές δηλώσεις για «εβραίους που μυρίζουν αίμα» από τον ηγέτη της Ακρας Δεξιάς Γιώργο Καρατζαφέρη και που σιωπηλά επικροτήθηκαν από τον Πρόεδρο της Βουλης Δ.Σιούφα. Η Αριστερά καταδίκασε με την μέγιστη αυστηρότητα το Ισραήλ και ταυτόχρονα αρνήθηκε να καταδικάσει τα βίαια αντισημιτικά επεισόδια στην ίδια της την χώρα, ενώ τραγελαφική ήταν η χρησιμοθηρική αναφορά στο “Ολοκαύτωμα” στη Γάζα από ανθρώπους που ευτελίζουν ενσυνείδητα την Σοά και αρνούνται να συμμετάσχουν σε όποια τελετή μνήμης.

Στελέχη της Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος όπως ο Μητρ.Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ μίλησαν για “σιωνιστικά τέρατα με γαμψά νύχια” που στηρίζονται από τις «μασονικές στοές» και κατηγόρησε ευθέως τους έλληνες εβραίους, (ο νεοναζιστικός Στόχος επικροτεί). Άλλοι όπως ο Μητροπ.Θεσσαλονικής Ανθιμος, (γνωστός για άλλες αμφισβητήσιμες δηλώσεις), είπε οτι οι εβραίοι τιμωρούνται γιατί “σταύρωσαν το Χριστό” και είναι θεοκτόνοι – άλλωστε την κάρτα των θεοκτόνων την έπαιξαν και πρωτοσέλιδα εφημερίδων όπως η Βραδυνή μιλώντας για «Σταύρωση» και «Πόντιους Πιλάτους».  Δεν αναφέρομαι καν στα πρωτοσέλιδα παρανοϊκών αντισημιτικών ορθόδοξων εφημερίδων όπως ο Ορθόδοξος Τύπος που μιλούσαν “ΣΙΩΝΙΣΤΑΙ ΚΑΙ ΜΑΣΩΝΟΙ ΣΤΗΡΙΖΟΥΝ ΤΗΝ ΣΦΑΓΗ”, αλλά θα περιορισθώ στην αντισημιτική εφημερίδα Αυριανή που στο πρωτοσέλιδο δεξιά κατηγόρησε τους αμερικανοεβραίους οτι έκλεψαν τον πλούτο, δημιούργησαν την παγκόσμια οικονομική κρίση μας πληροφορούσε για τις προσπάθειες των αμερικανοεβραίων να ξεκινήσουν τον Γ’ΠΠ (!!!), ενώ και αυτή μίλησε για «Ολοκαύτωμα». Μη ξεχάσουμε την Απογευματινή με πρωτοσέλιδο “Ολοκαύτωμα” και που είχε υποστηρίξει στο παρελθόν οτι οι ισραηλινοί κλέβουν τα όργανα των Παλαιστινίων και όλες τις υπόλοιπες εφημερίδες που αρνήθηκαν συστηματικά να αναφερθούν στο ρατσιστικό μίσος που κυρίευσε την χώρα.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί το μένος που επιδείχθηκε από τηλεοράσεις και ραδιόφωνα – ξεχωρίζει η ραδιοφωνική εκπομπή του Τζίμη Πανούση που ξεκαθάριζε οτι δεν υπάρχει καλός εβραίος αλλά είναι όλοι γουρούνια και δολοφόνοι αλλά ευτυχώς οι μέρες τους είναι μετρημένες. Αλλά ας περιοριστούμε στις απτές εκφράσεις του εφιάλτη του ρατσισμού που εκφράστηκε από την Ακρα Αριστερά, την Ακρα Δεξιά και τις νεοναζιστικές ομάδες της χώρας μας.

Αντισημιτικά γκράφιτι εμφανίστηκαν σε πολλούς δρόμους της πόλης – εδώ βλέπουμε σύνθημα στο εβραϊκό νεκροταφείο που μιλάει για “ΙΣΡΑΗΛΙΤΕΣ ΕΒΡΑΙΟΙ ΦΟΝΙΑΔΕΣ”. Αν υπήρχε κάποια αμφιβολία για την θρησκευτική δίασταση της αντίθεσης, οι δράστες φρόντισαν να το ξεκαθαρίσουν με το να προσθέσουν το εβραίος μετά το ισραηλίτης, αφού μάλλον το μπέρδεψαν με το ισραηλινός.

Μεταξύ των πολλών αντιπολεμικών διαδηλώσεων ξεχωρίζουν αυτές της Χρυσής Αυγής όπου η “Λευτεριά στην Παλαιστίνη” συνδυάζονταν αρμονικά με το “Τσεκούρι και φωτιά στα εβραϊκά σκυλιά” και το “Εβραίοι,Γουρούνια,Φονιάδες των Λαών”, (έχω και το βιντεο με την παρέλαση τους στο κέντρο της Αθήνας – σε άλλες περιπτώσεις αριστερές και αναρχικές ομάδες αντιστέκονται αλλά από ότι φαίνεται δεν πρέπει να διαφωνούσαν σε αυτή την περίπτωση). Στελέχη της οργάνωσης έδωσαν συνεντεύξεις σε πανελλήνιους τηλεοπτικούς σταθμούς όπως το Μέγκα – και γιατί όχι; Αλλωστε τα διάφορα ακροδεξιά κόμματα μάζεψαν περίπου 11% στην Αθήνα στις ευρωεκλογές που ακολούθησαν.

Βέροια

Άγνωστοι προσπάθησαν να πυρπολήσουν την Συναγωγή που βρίσκεται μέσα στην εβραϊκή συνοικία της Μπαρμπούτας μέσα στην πόλη της Βέροιας – ευτυχώς η φωτιά δεν επεκτάθηκε και μόνο η είσοδος και η βεράντα υπέστησαν ζημίες. Κατά διαβολική σύμπτωση πριν ένα χρόνο έγραφα για τις κατηγορίες οτι οι εβραίοι ενέχονται σε ανθρωποθυσίες που διατυπώθηκαν τον τηλεστάρ και επιτυχημένο συγγραφέα Ιωάννη Φουράκη, λόγω των ερευνών για την εύρεση του Αλεξ Μεσχισβίλι κοντά στην Μπαρμπούτα.

Βόλος

Η εβραϊκή κοινότητα της πόλης στοχοποιήθηκε από αριστερούς “ακτιβιστές” οι οποίοι έγραψαν συνθήματα στο τοίχο της συναγωγής της πόλης στις 31/12 απαιτώντας από έλληνες να απολογηθούν για το τι συμβαίνει σε ένα τρίτο κράτος και πιστοποιητικό κοινωνικών φρονημάτων στο χώρο όπου προσέρχονται για να προσευχηθούν – οι λειτουργίες αναβλήθηκαν και η συναγωγή έκλεισε μέχρι να περάσει η μπόρα.

Η αριστερή οργάνωση Αντιεξουσιαστική Κίνηση, που εμφανίστηκε ως υπεύθυνη για το γεγονός, με ανακοίνωση της αποποιήθηκε κάθε ανάμειξη αλλά ταυτόχρονα φρόντισε να  εμφανίσει την εβραίους σχεδόν σαν απόδημους ισραηλινούς με το να ταυτίσει την κατάσταση τους με την “τουρκική” μειονότητα της Δυτικής Θράκης.

Δράμα

Το Μνημείο του Ολοκαυτώματος καλύφθηκε με συνθήματα υπέρ της Παλαιστίνης. Δεν είναι προφανώς η πρώτη φορά – ξεχωρίζει η φορά που αριστερός “ακτιβιστής” είχε φροντίσει να ανακοινώσει την βεβήλωση που πραγματοποιήθηκε λίγο μετά. Πέρα από το ανορθόγραφο σύνθημα, οι επίδοξοι ειρηνόφιλοι διέγραψαν και τα ονόματα των εβραϊκών κοινοτήτων της Δράμας, της Καβάλας, της Νέας Ορεστιάδας, του Διδυμότειχου, της Ξάνθης, της Κομοτηνής, των Σερρών και της Καβάλας που δολοφονήθηκαν από τους ναζί Γερμανούς και τους Βούλγαρους σύμμαχους τους – το τι μήνυμα ήθελαν να περάσουν το αφήνω σε εσάς.

Θεσσαλονίκη

Ημερίδα του Εβραϊκού Μουσείου αναβλήθηκε μετά από “προειδοποιήσεις φοιτητών”, ενώ η Ομάδα για την Μελέτη του Ελληνικού Εβραϊσμού στο Πανεπιστήμιο Μακεδονίας έγινε δέκτης “προειδοποιήσεων”. Δεν θα αναφερθώ καν στα δεκάδες γκραφίτι που γέμισαν του τοίχους της πόλης ταυτίζοντας ισραηλινούς ή/και έλληνες εβραίους με τους ναζί.

Διμοιρίες των ΜΑΤ βρέθηκαν να φρουρούν τα γραφεία της Εβραϊκής Κοινότητας και την συναγωγή πολλές φορές κατά την διάρκεια διαδηλώσεων. Το ΚΚΕ για μια ακόμη φορά αποφάσισε να καταλήγουν οι πορείες διαμαρτυρίας στο Μνημείο του Ολοκαυτώματος, (υπενθυμίζω οτι το επίσημο ΚΚΕ το είχε βανδαλίσει το 2006 κατά την διάρκεια της πρώτης διαδήλωσης από το Ολοκαύτωμα και μετά ενάντια στην εβραϊκή κοινότητα της πόλης που είχε καταλήξει στον βίαιο αποκλεισμό των γραφείων της Κοινότητας). Ξεχωρίζει η άρνηση του Συριζα να συμμετάσχει στην Εθνική Ημέρα Μνήμης Ολοκαυτώματος στις 27/1 – όχι ότι έτσι και αλλιώς συστηματικά αρνείται να παρουσιαστεί αλλά αξίζει να σημειωθεί η απύθμενη υποκρισία των τοπικών αξιωματούχων του που δεν έχουν πρόβλημα να διαφημίζουν τις “ανθρωπιστικές” εκδηλώσεις τους πάνω από τα οστά των 350.000/500.000 νεκρών εβραίων που ακόμα βρίσκονται κάτω από το Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο. Άλλωστε γνωρίζω για μια περίπτωση “αντιρατσιστή” τοπικού στελέχους, του οποίου το σπίτι στην Ανω Πόλη “στολίζεται” από λεηλατημένες ταφόπλακες του εβραϊκού νεκροταφείου.

Για τα αντισημιτικά κηρύγματα του τοπικού Μητροπολίτη, που διακρίνεται για την εβραιοφαγία του, αναφέρθηκα πριν. Η ειρωνία οτι τα κηρύγματα έγιναν στο Ναό του Αγίου Δημητρίου  που έχει φτιαχτεί από κλεμμένες εβραικές ταφόπλακες προφανώς δεν ήταν εμφανής στο σεβάσμιο ιερέα.

Ιωάννινα

Για πολλοστή φορά τα τελευταία χρόνια άγνωστοι έσπασαν τάφους στο εβραϊκό νεκροταφείο της πόλης στις 19/1. Το φαινόμενο είναι, πλέον, τόσο αναμενόμενο που ο πρόεδρος της Ισραηλιτικής Κοινότητας Ιωαννίνων είχε ήδη ειδοποιήσει την Αστυνομία, χωρίς όμως αυτή να λάβει μέτρα. Το εβραϊκό νεκροταφείο Ιωαννίνων έχει γίνει μόνιμος στόχος τα τελευταία χρόνια μέσα στην γενική αδιαφορία της τοπικής κοινωνίας και την πιθανή εμπλοκή των τοπικών αστυνομικών αρχών. Έκτοτε από τον Ιανουάριο μέχρι σήμερα έχουν γίνει πέντε επιθέσεις και φτάσαμε στο επίπεδο να βεβηλώνονται τα ίδια τα λείψανα με σκοτωμένα ζώα για να υπάρξει κάποια μικρή αντίδραση , ενώ οι τοπικές οργανώσεις της Νέας Δημοκρατίας διακρίθηκαν από την άρνηση τους να καταδικάσουν το γεγονός.

Αξίζει να τονίσουμε αυτή η σειρά επιθέσεων μαζί με αυτή του Ιουλίου ήταν μια από τις χειρότερες αντισημιτικές επιθέσεις των τελευταίων ετών, (στην φωτογραφία οι σπασμένοι τάφοι του Ιανουαρίου).

Κέρκυρα

Βανδαλισμοί σημειώθηκαν στην συναγωγή της πόλης. Προφανέστατα καμμία αντίδραση σε μια πόλη με μια μακριά παράδοση αντισημιτισμού, (το πογκρόμ του 1891 – το χειρότερο στην ελληνική ιστορία, η συνεργασία με τους γερμανούς στην εξαφάνιση της τοπικής εβραικής κοινότητας…).

Λάρισα

Η Λάρισα υπήρξε η πόλη στην οποία η αντισημιτική παράνοια της Αριστεράς και της Δεξιάς εκδηλώθηκε με ιδιαίτερη μανία. Κατά την διάρκεια πορείας για τις συνθήκες στις φυλακές στις 17/1 αναρχικοί και παλαιστίνιοι διαδηλωτές επιχείρησαν να βανδαλίσουν την συναγωγή της πόλης. Αυτόνομοι από συγκεκριμένη ομάδα που συμμετείχαν στην πορεία τους απέτρεψαν, παρά τις αντιδράσεις λοιπών μερών της διαδήλωσης. Η Συναγωγή χρειάστηκε και άλλες μέρες την προστασία από διμοιρίες των ΜΑΤ, ενώ συνθήματα των διαδηλωτών επαναλάμβαναν τις γνωστές κατηγορίες οτι οι εβραίοι ελέγχουν την Ελλάδα και οτι η Αστυνομία προστατεύει “τους αφέντες” της.

Την ίδια μέρα ακροδεξιές οργανώσεις συνδεδεμένες με την Χρυσή Αυγή διοργάνωσαν συγκέντρωση έξω από τον χώρο όπου είναι συγκεντρωμένη η Συναγωγή και το Εβραϊκό Σχολείο με τίτλο “Εβραίοι Δολοφόνοι. Έξω από την Λάρισα!“, (στην φωτογραφία δεξιά screenshot από νεοναζιστικό ιστότοπο που ανακοίνωνε την νεοναζιστική σύναξη – η ανάρτηση σήμερα έχει διαγραφεί). Η συγκέντρωση κατέληξε στον βανδαλισμό του μνημείου για την εξόντωση των Λαρισαίων Εβραίων. Ταυτόχρονα κυκλοφόρησαν μηνύματα για μποϋκοτάζ των εβραϊκών καταστημάτων και μηνύματα για  μαζική συμμετοχή της Χρυσής Αυγής σε διαδηλώσεις της “ΠΑΝΕΥΡΩΠΑΪΚΗ ΕΠΙΤΡΟΠΗ ΓΙΑ ΤΟΝ ΤΕΡΜΑΤΙΣΜΟ ΤΟΥ ΑΠΟΚΛΕΙΣΜΟΥ ΤΗΣ ΓΑΖΑΣ· ΣΥΝΔΕΣΜΟΣ ΕΛΛΗΝΟΠΑΛΑΙΣΤΙΑΝΙΚΗΣ ΦΙΛΙΑΣ”. Ας μην ξεχνάμε οτι η Συναγωγή αποτελεί μόνιμο πέρασμα των νεοναζιστικών διαδηλώσεων της Χρυσής Αυγής μέχρι και σήμερα όπως μαθαίνουμε από την ίδια την Χρυσή Αυγή.

Δεν χρειάζεται να προσθέσω οτι η εβραϊκή κοινότητα της πόλης μετά από αυτή την συνδυασμένη επίθεση από Αριστερούς και Δεξιούς αντισημίτες αναγκάστηκε να διακόψει κάθε κοινοτική δραστηριότητα μέχρι να ηρεμήσουν τα πράγματα, ενώ αυξήθηκαν τα μέτρα προστασίας στο εβραϊκό σχολείο που βρίσκεται στην ιδια περιοχή.

Επιμύθιο

Είναι αδαής ή ανενημέρωτος ή κακόβουλος αυτός που πιστεύει οτι στην Ελλάδα δεν υπάρχει αντισημιτισμός και οτι οι έλληνες έχουμε κάνει το εμβόλιο κατά του ρατσισμού. Αυτό αφορά είτε πιθανούς ψηφοφόρους του ΛΑΟΣ, είτε υποψηφίους των Ο-Π που πιστεύουν οτι η ζωή των εβραίων στην Ελλάδα “δεν επηρεάζεται βαθύτερα” και τα κίνητρα της αντισημιτικής βίας βασίζονται στην “πολιτική του Ισραήλ”.

Πολύ χειρότερα γεγονότα συνέβησαν αλλού στην Ευρώπη όπως στην Ολλανδία, Γαλλία, Μεγάλη Βρετανία – η Ελλάδα δεν υπήρξε μοναδική περίπτωση. Πουθενά όμως δεν υπήρξε μια τέτοια εκκωφαντική απουσία αντιδράσεων από την κοινωνία και από τον πολιτικό κόσμο. Ευχαριστώ το Παρατηρητήριο των Συμφωνιών του Ελσινκι, τους terminal119 που υπήρξαν οι μόνοι που καταδίκασαν αυτές τις ενέργειες. Ολους τους υπόλοιπους τους ευχαριστώ για το διεθνιστικό τους ενδιαφέρον – τα εκατομμύρια των διαδηλώσεων για τις σφαγές των Κούρδων στο Ιράκ του Σαντάμ, τις σφαγές εκατοντάδων χιλιάδων μαύρων χριστιανών από άραβες μουσουλμάνους στο Νταρφούρ, την γενοκτονία στην Ρουάντα ή τις μαζικές σφαγές αλβανών από τους σέρβους αδερφούς στην γειτονιά μας σε Κόσοβο και Βοσνία ή ακόμα πιο πρόσφατα με τους Ταμίλ αποτελούν αποκαλυπτικές των κινήτρων τους πίσω από το όψιμο ενδιαφέρον τους.

Είναι γελοίοι και βαθύτατα υποκριτές αυτοί που ξέρουν να μιλάνε για καημένους επαγγελματίες αντιρατσιστές που δεν μπορούν να επικρίνουν το Ισραήλ χωρίς να κατηγορηθούν για αντισημιτισμό, ενώ στην πραγματικότητα κρατούν το στόμα τους ερμητικά κλειστό για τα όργια που συμβαίνουν στην ίδια τους την χώρα κάθε φορά που φουντώνει η κατάσταση στην Μέση Ανατολή. Οτι κάθε μέρα υπάρχουν δεκάδες άρθρα και τηλεοπτικές εκπομπές για τα δικαιώματα των παλαιστινίων, ενώ το γεγονός οτι στα Ιωάννινα κανείς δεν αισθάνεται ασφαλής για την τύχη των λείψανων της οικογένειας του – κατά τα άλλα ελλήνων πολιτών οι οποίοι είναι χρήσιμοι για φόρους, στρατό και για να λέμε πόσο ανεκτική είναι η χώρα μας – δεν ακούστηκε κουβέντα. Για να μην μιλήσω για την κατάσταση στην Θεσσαλονίκη με την οποία θα ασχοληθώ εκτενώς φέτος.

ΥΓ. Ξεχωρίζω την ανάρτηση του doctor που μόνο για φιλο-ισραηλινός δε μπορεί να κατηγορηθεί – με εκφράζει απόλυτα. Οσο για τους επαγγελματίες αντιφασίστες της Αριστεράς ξεχωρίζω τα σχόλια της antifa-area η οποία είναι ενδεικτική του αντιεξουσιαστικού/αριστερού αντισημιτισμού – δείτε και το About Us του ιστολογίου ενδεικτικό της πνευματικής τους ένδειας που ούτε να αντιγράψει παπαγαλία ένα κείμενο δεν είναι ικανή. Riot Police (MAT) guarding synagogues, meetings of anxious parents in Jewish schools – while synagogues, cemeteries and monuments became targets of vandalism and arson. This was the picture that Greek Jewry presented in December and January when the totality of the greek society decided that the best way to support the “champions of Hamas” (as infamous anti-Semitic newspaper Avriani put it, 29/12/08) was to burst against fellow greek citizens born with the wrong religion

Violent antisemitic incidents occurred in 9 greek cities: Athens, Salonica, Larissa, Volos, Ioannina, Corfu but also in judenrein cities such as Komotini, Veria, Drama. Nationwide we saw outrageous statements on “blood craving jews” by Extreme-Right leader Y.Karatzaferis, while Leftist leaders went overboard in condemning Israel but downright refused to condemn antisemitic incidents in their own home; especially their utilitarian reference to the Holocaust would have been tragic if not comic in front of their downright refusal to join the State Holocaust Memorial Day later in the month as they usually do. Members of the Greek Church like Metrop.of Piraeus Serafim spoke of “zionist monsters with sharp claws” being aided by “massonic lodges”. Metrop.of Salonica Anthimos, (already famous for other anti-jewish statements), said that Jews are being punished for killing Jesus Christ; the “Christ-Killer” card was also played by newspaper frontpages like Vradini speaking of “Crucifixion” and “Ponzio Pilates”.  I won’t even mention the paranoid  antisemitic Christian Orthodox newspapers like Orthodoxos Tipos who frontlined “Zionists and Massons support the slaughtering” but I will limit myself to the infamous antisemitic newspaper Avriani which spoke of American Jews stealing the money and causing the world economic crisis and warned us of American Jews plotting to set off WW3 (!!!) <photos in the left> while also frontlining “Holocaust”. Let’s not forget newspapers like Apogevmatini which frontlined “Holocaust” which had already accused Israelis of harvesting Palestinian organs long before the swedes ever discovering the rumor and all the other newspapers which refused to talk about the wave of antisemitic hatred that swept through Greece.

The Press and the TV did their best to exasperate the climate – a known liberal radio presenter, Jimmy Panousis, said it plainly: “There are no good jews” and that Jews are pigs and murderers but fortunately their days are numbered. But let’s limit ourselves to the tangible aspects of the racist nightmare that swept Greece and included Far Right, Far Left and neonazi groups in Greece.

Athens

Antisemitic graffiti appeared in many streets; in the photo we can see written on the walls of the Jewish Cemetery: “Israelites Jews Murderers”. In case the clearly religious aspect of the hatred went unnoticed, the perpetrators added “Jews” probably because they confused “Israelites” with “Israelis”.

Among the various antiwar protests, the one of neonazi group Chrissi Avgi gains prominence where “Freedom to Palestine” was combined with “Ax and fire to the jewish dogs” and “Jews, Pigs, Murderers of nations”, (Ι have the video of the march – usually they face leftist demonstrators but it appears that this time they were in agreement). Members of the neonazi group were interviewed by national TV stations like Mega TV and why shouldn’t they, Extreme-Right political parties managed to gather 11% in Athens in the recent elections.

Veria

Unknown perpetrators attempted to set on fire the synagogue of the city in the center of Veria, in the old Jewish Quarter named Barbouta – fortunately only the door and the patio suffered damage. Ironically a year ago I was writing about blood libel accusations from trash-TV star and successful author Ioannis Fourakis who accused Jews of human sacrifices during the search of hate-crime victim Alex Mechisvili in the Barbouta district.

Volos

"The State of Israel is murdering! What side are you on?"

The Jewish Community of Volos was targeted by leftist protesters which sprayed graffiti on the exterior wall of the synagogue and against the community itself on 31/12 demanding greek citizens apologizing for what is happening in a third country and asking for loyalty credentials in the place they go to worship;  the synagogue remained closed and services were suspended indefinitely.

The leftist organization Antiexousiastiki Kinisi, which appeared responsible for the act, denied in a statement any involvement after presenting Greek Jews almost as Israelis in exile when drawing a parallel with what the situation of the “turkish” minority of Western Thrace.

Drama

The Holocaust Monument was vandalized with pro-Palestinian graffiti. Of course it wasn’t the first time happening, with the most famous vandalism being the one by a leftist activist some years ago who announced his intentions amidst general indifference to the act he proceeded to do. Besides the wrong spelling the would-be peace activists also erased the names of the murdered, by the nazi Germans and their Bulgarian allies, Jewish Communities of Serres, Drama, Kavala, Nea Orestiada, Didymoteicho, Xanthi, Komotini. What was their message I leave it up to you to interpret.

Salonika

A seminar of the Jewish Museum was postponed after “warnings” of students, while a meeting of the Study Group for Greek Jewry also received “warnings”. I won’t even comment on the tenths of graffiti appearing all over the city equating the Greeks Jews and/or Israelis to the Nazis.

Riot Police (MAT) were often found guarding the offices of the local community and Synagogue. The greek Communist Party once again decided to end its protests in the Holocaust Memorial that had vandalized in 2006, (only to top that with a demonstration against the Salonican Jews themselves the following day ending in the blockade of the communal offices), while leftist parliamentary party Syriza declined to participate in the Holocaust Memorial Day, as it has done frequently the past years. I won’t comment on the bottomless hypocrisy of the local party officials which on the other hand have no problem hosting their “antiwar” rallies on the University which lies on top of the remains of 350.000/500.000 Jews which were never removed from the destroyed, by Greek Authorities during the Holocaust, Jewish Cemetery of Thessaloniki. Indicative is the case of an “anti-racism” activist whose house in Ano Poli district is “adorned” with looted Jewish gravestones.

We have already mentioned above of the antisemitic sermons of the local Metropolite. The irony that the sermon took place in the St.Demetrious Church which is constructed by looted Jewish gravestones was probably lost on the elder priest.

Ioannina

Broken tombs in January

For yet another time the local Jewish Cemetery was vandalized and some tombs were broken on 19/1. These incidents are so common that the president of the community had already warned the Police which declined from taking preventive measures. The Jewish cemetery in Ioannina is a permanent target of extreme-Right vandalism the past years amids the general indifference of the local society and suspicions for possible local Police involvement in the vandalisms. Since January we have had 5 attacks and we’ve reached a level of the remains themselves being desecrated with smashed animals to have any kind of reaction, while the local organization of ruling conservative party Nea Dimokratia refused categorically to condemn the incident.

It’s worthy to point out that these attacks, together with the one of July are probably the worst antisemitic incidents in recent years, (in the photo the broken graves of January).

Corfu

The city Synagogue was vandalized. Of course there were no reactions in an island with a strong antisemitic tradition, (the 1891 pogrom – worst in greek history, local cooperation with the Germans during the Holocaust etc).

Larissa

The town in which the antisemitic madness of both Left and Right was emblematic. During a protest on 1/17 anarchics and Palestinians tried to vandalize the Synagogue. Other autonomous protesters from a specific group managed to stop them despite the general resentment. Riot Police protected the Synagogue for several days, while protesters suggested that Jews rule Greece and thus the Police was protecting “it’s masters”.

The same day FarRight and neonazi groups linked with Chrissi Avghi also held a protest near  the Synagogue and the Jewish Elementary School; the main theme was “Jewish Murderers – Get out of Larissa”.  <screenshot of the invitation in the left – they have removed any trace since> The protest resulted in vandalizing of the Holocaust Monument for the  murdered Jews of Larissa.  Contemporaneously messages circulated calling on the boycotting of Jewish shops and the participation of Chrissi Avghi in protests of the “Paneuropean Comittee on ending the Gaza boycott – GreekPalestian Friendship committee“. Let’s not forget that still today neonazi marches do not fail to pass in front of the Synagogue and shout antisemitic slogans.

Needless to add that the Jewish Community of Larissa after these combined attacks by Leftist and Rightist antisemites was forced to suspend all communal activities until things calmed down, while security measures were increased in the Jewish School which is found in the same area.

Aftermath

He is either ignorant or not-informed or malicious anyone who thinks that in Greece there is no antisemitism and greeks have taken the immunization shot against racism. This includes the possible voters of antisemitic political party LàOS and the Green’s candidates who think the life of Greek Jews “is not deeply affected” and the motives of antisemitic violence are based “on the policy of Israel”.

Much worse happened in Europe like the Netherlands, France or Great Brittain – Greece was neither an isolated case, nor would it qualify as the worse offender. Still, nowhere in the world did we see such a deafening lack of reactions by the greek political parties and society in general. I would like to thank Helsinki Monitor, terminal119 for they were the only ones to condemn these acts. Concluding I would like to thank everyone else for the famous greek international solidarity – the innumerable protests for the slaughter of Kurds in Saddam’s Iraq, the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of black christians by muslim arabs in Darfur, the genocide in Rwanda or the mass murders of albanians by our serb brothers in our own back yard or even more recently for the Tamil massacres are immensely revealing of the real motives behind their interest.

I would also like to add that they are ludicrous and deeply hypocritical those who cry over poor professional antiracism activists in Greece who cannot judge Israel without being accused of antisemitism, while they keep their mouths hermetically shut over the orgies that take place in their own country every time the situation in the Middle East gets heated. That every single day there were articles and TV shows on the Palestinian rights while on the fact that in Ioannina no one is was feeling secure even for the fate of the remains of their loved ones – greek citizens useful for taxes, the army and saying how tolerant Greece is – wasn’t being said anything.

Για 10η συνεχόμενη χρονιά η Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση για την Διατήρηση και Προώθηση της Εβραϊκής Κουλτούρας και Κληρονομιάς (AEPJ) διοργανώνει την Ευρωπαϊκή Ημέρα Εβραϊκής Κουλτούρας την Κυριακή 6 Σεπτεμβρίου 2009. Η μέρα συνδέεται με διάφορες εκδηλώσεις που σκοπό έχουν να γνωρίσουν την πλούσια ευρωπαϊκή εβραϊκή πολιτισμική παρουσία. Στην χώρα μας συμμετέχει φέτος η Συναγωγή Ετς Χαΐμ στα Χανιά με ένα πλούσιο πρόγραμμα που είδαμε εδώ. Η Αθήνα, η Θεσσαλονίκη και η Ρόδος δεν έχουν προγραμματίσει κάτι ιδιαίτερο αλλά η ημέρα είναι μια καλή ευκαιρία να επισκεφθείτε το τοπικό σας μουσείο και να γιορτάσετε πάνω από 2000 χρόνια ελληνοεβραϊκού πολιτισμού, (υπενθυμίζω οτι κατά το δυνατόν προσπαθώ να κρατώ ενημερωμένη την σελίδα με εβραϊκές εκδηλώσεις).

Αθήνα

Το Εβραϊκό Μουσείο Ελλάδος θα παραμείνει ανοικτό από τις 10 το πρωί μέχρι τις 4 το απόγευμα και θα προσφέρει σύντομες ξεναγήσεις στους επισκέπτες. Θεσσαλονίκη

To Εβραϊκό Μουσείο Θεσσαλονίκης θα παραμείνει ανοικτό από τις 11 το πρωί μέχρι τις 3 το απόγευμα και η είσοδος θα είναι δωρεάν, (στην φωτογραφία το πόστερ από την φετεινή χρονιά). For the 10th consecutive year the European Association for the Preservation and Promotion of Jewish Culture and Heritage (AEPJ) organizes the European Day of Jewish Culture on Sunday the 6th, 2009. The day is an occasion for various initiatives aimed to make public the vast european jewish cultural heritage. This year the Etz Hayyim Synagogue in Chania, the Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, the Jewish Museum of Greece in Athens and the Jewish Museum of Rhodes  participate; we’ve already covered the great program of the Etz Hayyim Synagogue – maybe the other cities may not match  it but the day certainly sounds like a great opportunity to head to your local museum and get acquainted with over 2000 year of jewish-greek heritage, (and I remind you that I try to keep the page with Jewish events as updated as possible).

Athens

The Jewish Museum of Greece covering Jewish life from all over Greece will remain open from 10am to 4pm offering brief tours to the visitors. The Museum is located in 39, Nikis st in the center of Athens near Syndagma Sq. – information can be obtained in its site here.

Salonica

The Jewish Museum of Thessaloniki, the most important sephardic community in the world, will remain open from 11am to 3pm free of charge to all visitors. The museum is in 13, Agiou Mina st. in downtown Salonica near Eleftherias Sq. – information can be found here.

Rhodes

Ελληνίδα Εβραία που μόλις έφτασε στο Μπίρκεναου/Πηγή:USHMM

Ok, αυτό μάλλον είναι ενδιαφέρον για τους εβραίους αναγνώστες που ψάχνουν για ίχνη της οικογένειας τους ή/και ιστορικούς. Όπως γνωρίζουμε σημαντικός αριθμός εβραίων της Ελλάδας αναγκάστηκε να εγκαταλείψει την χώρα του στις αρχές του αιώνα λόγω των δυσμενών πολιτικών και οικονομικών συνθηκών που είχαν επικρατήσει, (άλλωστε το ίδιο συνέβαινε και σε χιλιάδες χριστιανούς που εγκατέλειπαν την Ελλάδα για παρόμοιους λόγους). Το μεγαλύτερο μέρος κατευθύνθηκε προς την Γαλλία λόγω της γαλλικής κουλτούρας που είχε αναπτυχθεί χάρη στο εκπαιδευτικό έργο της Alliance Universalle Israelite.

Αναμενόμενο οπότε είναι οτι σημαντικό μέρος των 85.000 γάλλων εβραίων που δολοφονήθηκαν από τους γερμανούς κατάγονταν από τις μεγάλες εβραϊκές κοινότητες της Ελλάδας. Μάλιστα αξίζει να σημειωθεί οτι εξαιρετικά μεγάλο ποσοστό των εβραίων που πέρασαν από το στρατόπεδο του Ντρανσύ, που αποτελούσε το βασικό κέντρο συγκέντρωσης πριν αποσταλούν στα στρατόπεδα εξόντωσης, δεν είχε γεννηθεί στην Γαλλία μιας και η δωσίλογη γαλλική κυβέρνηση έστελνε πρώτα τους μη-γηγενείς σε σχέση με τους αυτόχθονες Γάλλους Εβραίους.

Η Γαλλική Δημοκρατία έχει αναλάβει την πρωτοβουλία να δώσει ένα όνομα στους συνολικά περίπου 115.500 γάλλους που δολοφονήθηκαν και έτσι μπορούμε και έχουμε τα ονόματα 693 ατόμων ελληνικής καταγωγής, (πλήρης λίστα εδώ), που αντιπροσωπεύουν ένα δείγμα 55.371 δολοφονηθέντων. Από αυτούς 685 είναι εβραίοι και 8 χριστιανοί, (πολιτικοί κρατούμενοι κρίνοντας από τους τόπους εξόντωσης – ενώ οι εβραίοι δολοφονήθηκαν κυρίως στο Άουσβιτς αλλά και σε μαζικές εκτελέσεις στις Βαλτικές χώρες). Περίπου 600 είναι εβραίοι από την Θεσσαλονίκη, ενώ οι υπόλοιποι είναι από τη Χίο, Βέροια, Δράμα, Αρτα, Ρόδο, Καβάλα, Κέρκυρα,  Ιωάννινα, Αθήνα, Ξάνθη, Βόλο, Φούρνους (;), Κομοτηνή – ενώ υπάρχουν και 2/3 από Επισκοπή, Σηλυβρία, Αδριανούπολη.

Η λίστα έχει ορισμένα λάθη: το Αρδίτη εμφανίζεται ως Arditti και Ardity, το Bengas είναι μάλλος Μπέγας, το Μπενρουμπή υφίσταται ως Ben Ruby κ.ο.κ. Είναι όμως εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρουσα και συμπληρώνεται, με λίγη προσπάθεια, από λίστες που θα βρείτε σε αυτόν τον ιστότοπο. Το πρόβλημα είναι οτι ο συγκεκριμένος δε λειτουργεί σωστά και καλύτερα είναι να κάνετε ένα site-specific Google search με τα ονόματα που σας ενδιαφέρουν, (πχ Cohen site:http://www.not-the-germans-alone.org). Επιπλέον πληροφορίες θα βρείτε από την λίστα στο sephardicstudies.org που βασίζεται στο βιβλίο του Κλαρσφελντ.

Ετσι η Ραχήλ Ματαράσσο, που γεννήθηκε στις 25/1/1917 στην Θεσσαλονίκη και πέθανε στις 29/4/1944 στο Αουσβιτς, εμφανίζεται στην δεύτερη λίστα και τρίτη λίστα αλλά όχι στην πρώτη. Ομως ο Ισαάκ Βαένα εμφανίζεται και στις τρεις λίστες και συνδυάζοντάς τες μαθαίνουμε οτι γεννήθηκε στις 15 Ιουνίου του 1900 στην Θεσσαλονίκη, ζούσε στην Αβινιόν όπου και συνελήφθη στις 6 Απριλίου του 1944. Στις 20 Απριλίου μπήκε στο στρατόπεδο του Ντρανσύ και στις 15 Μαΐου μεταφέρθηκε με το κονβόϊ νούμερο 73 στο Κάουνας της Λιθουανίας και δολοφονήθηκε την ίδια ημέρα που έφτασε στις 20 Μαΐου 1944.

Υπενθυμίζω οτι αυτοί οι 1000+ (;) ελληνοεβραίοι δεν συμπεριλαμβάνονται στους περίπου 55/65.000 έλληνες εβραίους που ζούσαν στην Ελλάδα και δολοφονήθηκαν είτε στα καταναγκαστικά έργα στην Ελλάδα, είτε στα στρατόπεδα εξόντωσης στην Πολωνία, την Γερμανία και Αυστρία. Ελπίζω πάντως να βοηθήσει τους αναγνώστες που ψάχνουν πληροφορίες για τις οικογένειες τους.

This post is probably of interest only for the Jewish readers who seek tracks of their family and/or historians. As we know a significant number of Jews left Greece in the beginning of the century due to the difficult political and economical situation, (as many thousands of Christians did at that time). Among the major destinations was France due to the french influence of the Alliance Universalle Israelite.

It is only to be expected that an important part of the 85.000 French Jews who were murdered by the Germans were derived from the major Jewish communities of Greece. It should be noted that an extremely high percentage of the Jews who passed from the Drancy camp before being deported to the various death camps, weren’t born in France since the collaborationist french government favorited them over native French-Jews.

The French Republic has undertaken the task to give a name to the 115.500 French men and women  deported and murdered and this way we have the names of 693 people of greek background, (a complete list can be found here), which derive from a sample of 53.751 persons. 685 of them are Jews and 8 are Christians, (political prisoners judging from the camp in which they died – Jews died mainly in Auschwitz and in mass executions in the Baltic states). About 600 are from Salonica, while the rest come from Chios, Veria, Drama, Arta, Rhodes, Kavala, Corfu, Ioannina, Athens,Xanthi, Volos, Fournous (?), Komotini and a couple from Episkopi, Silivria and Adrianople.

The list has some mistakes: from Αρδίτη which appears both as Arditti and Ardity, Bengas is probably Μπέγας etc. Still, it is extremely interesting and with a little extra effort can be completed with complementary lists that can be found in this site. The problem is that the site doesn’t function correctly and it is preferable that a site-specific Google search is conducted instead, (for example: Cohen site:http://www.not-the-germans-alone.org). Additional info can be found in the list in sephardicstudies.org which is based on the Klarsfeld book.

This way Rachel Matarasso, born 25/1/1917 in Salonica and died on 29/4/1944 in Auschwitz, appears on the second and third list but not on the first. But Isaac Vaena appears in all of the three lists and this way we learn that he was born on the 15th of June 1900 in Salonica, he lived in Avignon and was arrested there on April the 6th 1944. He entered the Drancy camp on April the 20th and left it for Kaunas, Lithuania on May the 15th with convoy no73. He arrived on May the 20th and was murdered the same day he arrived.

I remind you that these 1000+ (?) Greek Jews are not among the 55/65.000 Greek Jews who were living in Greece and were murdered either in forced labor in Greece , or in extermination camps in Poland, Germany and Austria. In any case I hope that it helps those readers seeking information on their families.

Δεν υπάρχουν πολλά αξιοθέατα εβραϊκού ενδιαφέροντος στην Αθήνα, συγκρινόμενη με την Θεσσαλονίκη αλλά μερικές φορές τυχαίνουν μερικές απρόσμενες ανακαλύψεις στα πιο απρόσμενα μέρη. Ήμουν τυχερός να κάνω μια τέτοια ανακάλυψη καθώς περπατούσα στην Αρχαία Αγορά και τυχαίως διαπιστώνοντας οτι ένα κτίριο, κατά τη διάρκεια της ζωής του, είχε χρησιμεύσει και ως συναγωγή.

Στην πινακίδα διαβάζουμε οτι το κτίριο αρχικά υπήρξε το Μητρώο όπου φυλάσσονταν τα δημόσια έγγραφα της πόλης και είχε χτιστεί γύρω στο 150 π.κ.ε. Διαβάζουμε οτι το κτίριο καταστράφηκε το 267 μ.κ.ε. και αργότερα τμήματα του χρησιμοποιήθηκαν ως ταβέρνα, εβραϊκή συναγωγή και ελαιοτριβείο μέχρι την εγκατάλειψη του στους βυζαντινούς χρόνους. Μπορείτε να το δείτε στην φωτογραφία ενώ πιο πίσω φαίνεται ο ναός του Ηφαίστου.

Γυρνώντας πίσω στο σπίτι έψαξα αλλά δεν μπόρεσα να βρω την αρχαιολογική μελέτη πάνω στην οποία βασίστηκε η υπόθεση αυτή, αν και όπως ανακάλυψα πρόσφατα, υπάρχουν πολλά αρχαία εβραϊκά μνημεία στην Ελλάδα τα οποία δεν ήξερα και δεν εντοπίζονται online. Η μόνη σίγουρη πληροφορία, που γνωρίζω εγώ, για την υπόθεσης της χρήσης ως συναγωγή ήταν η εύρεση ενός μαρμάρινου κομματιού, (αυτό στην φωτογραφία δεξιά). Το συγκεκριμένο θραύσμα απεικονίζει μια επτάφωτη λυχνία που ονομάζεται μενορά και ένα συγκεκριμένο φυτό, (λουλάβ), τα οποία αποτελούν μέρος της κλασσικής εβραϊκής εικονογραφίας της εποχής και μάλλον ανήκει στον 3ο αιώνα.

Not many sites of jewish interest exist in Athens, compared to Thessaloniki but sometimes one gets unexpected finds in the most unexpected places. I was able to make such a find while strolling along the Ancient Agora of Athens and casually discovering that one the buildings had served, at some part of it’s life, as a synagogue.

The building originally housed the Mitroon, the city’s public documents keeping authority and was built around 150 BCE. The tourist sign tells us that the building was eventually raided and destroyed in 267 CE and later on parts of it served as a tavern, a jewish synagogue and an oil-press until the building was deserted in the byzantine era. You can see it in the photo, while the larger temple behind it is the Temple of Ephestus which I’m kind fond of.

Going back to a computer I didn’t find any archeological paper that deals with the subject although admittedly, as I recently found out, there are a lot of ancient jewish monuments in Greece that I was not aware of. The only information I was able to find documenting it’s use as a synagogue is the discovery of a small marble piece, (you can see it on the right above). This fragment depicts a menorah and a specific plant, (lulav), which are part of the classic jewish iconography of the era; presumably it dates around the 3rd century CE.

The Yousouroum neighbourhood

Each Sunday athenians and tourists flock to the famous Flea Market of Monastiraki in the heart of Athens, affectiοnatelly called “yousouroum“/ “γιουσουρούμ“, (alternate spellings in english: yiusurum/ giousouroum). Originally the term “yousouroum” was limited to Avissinias Square which was the traditional area of the old-curiosity shop dealers; it was used to describe both the old-curiosity market and the square itself. This fleamarket became so famous in Greece that the term “yousouroum” has come to be an accepted term to symbolize any fleamarket or bazaar in all of Greece. The term is so popular that, even though it is considered a folk term, it is used today in important newspapers or even at meetings of town councils discussing the institution of fleamarkets. The fleamarket of Avisinias Square although it has expanded to the whole Monastiraki area, it is still referred today by athenians as Yousouroum.

Apart from introducing itself in modern greek in everyday speech, dictionaries also do not fail to mention it; Tegopoulos-Fytrakis dictionary of the greek language defines the term as:

“γιουσουρούμ”: the market of old-curiosity shops, (η πιάτσα των παλιατζίδικων); etymol: name of a Jewish curiosity shop dealer (όνομα Εβραίου παλαιοπώλη της Αθήνας)

My personal experience tells me that it used not only to describe any fleamarket, but also the very action of auctioning something or visiting any disorganized colorful market or bazaar. Greek songwriter Nikolas Asimos was the author of an album entitled “Στο Φαλιμέντο του Κόσμου – Γιουσουρούμ“. There are even greek blogs that are named “yousouroum“. :)

But where did this term derive from? Our best source is the “Union of old curiosity shop owners of Athens and surrounding areas”. They state that the first president of their association was a Jewish Greek whose surname is Yousouroum and whose shop was located in the Avisinias Square which was known simply as Yousouroum because of him.

Other sources tell us that one of the first and maybe most important old-curiosity shops was run by Noe (Noah) Yousouroum; his shop existed already from the 19th century, together with other old-curiosity jewish dealers. It also tells us that it was his son Elias Yousouroum who became vice-president of the “Union of Old curiosity shops of Athens” mentioned earlier. I wasn’t able to locate exact dates but everybody concords that there was an old shop operated by the Yousouroum family – it was this shop that gave it’s name to the Square+market – they also were involved in the institution of the Union of the old curiosity shops. Also the magazine of the Central Board of the Jewish Communities had an article written on Yousouroum market in their magazine dedicated to Athens becoming the Cultural Capital of Europe in 1985 but I seem to have misplaced it, (if anyone has a pdf copy please send it :) ).

The Yousouroum family eventually gave up the shop but the name still is used either to denote the Avisinias Square in Athens or any fleamarket in Greece. Searching the internet I found that members of the family still exist, while at least one member of the Yousouroum family, Yacov Yousouroum, perished in the Holocaust. To my knowledge the term “yousouroum” is the only jewish name of a landmark in Athens and impressively enough maybe it is the only jewish term to survive in the greek language today because of the presence of greek jews and not generically because of the jewish religion.

So next time you ask where the local yousouroum is, smile at the thought that you’re actually talking in hebrew!
