Ισως η πιο γνωστή σεφαραδίτικη συνταγή, (αν και οι ρωμανιώτες εβραίοι αναγνώστες θα δυσανασχετήσουν μιας και εμφανίζονται και στη δική τους κουζίνα), είναι τα guevos haminados ή πιο απλά στα ελληνικά αυγά χαμινάδος με το χαρακτηριστικό γυαλιστερό καφεκόκκινο χρώμα που παίρνουν και με την ελαφρώς πικάντικη γεύση τους.

Η λέξη guevos haminados, (ή αλλιώς huevos enhaminados), για μερικούς σημαίνει “αυγά φούρνου”  αν και ορισμένοι θεωρούν οτι η πιο σωστή ερμηνεία θα ήταν “αυγά ζεσταμένα”. Στην πραγματικότητα η ονομασία προέρχεται από την λέξη hamin που με την σειρά της προέρχεται από την φράση της Μισνά tomnin et ha’hamin, δηλαδή να θάβεις ζεστό [το φαγητό]. Οι Εβραίοι στα πλαίσια της αργίας του Σαμπάτ, (δηλαδή του Σαββάτου), απαγορεύεται να ανάβουν φωτιά – για αυτό το λόγο ετοίμαζαν φαγητά τα οποία είτε μπορούσαν να τα βάλουν από την προηγουμένη για αργό μαγείρεμα και να ήταν έτοιμα και ζεστά για το γεύμα του Σαββάτου. Αυτό το είδος φαγητών ονομάζονταν hamin [ham: ζεστό στα εβραϊκά] και αποτελούν μια ιδιαίτερη κατηγορία συνταγών που ο πιο επιφανής εκπρόσωπος τους στην σεφαραδίτικη κουζίνα είναι τα αυγά χαμινάδος. Αν και με την μαγειρική δεν έχει νόημα να μιλάμε για πατρίδες είναι ενδιαφέρον οτι οι εβραίοι από την Τεργέστη τα ονομάζουν τούρκικα αυγά, οι εβραίοι στην ηπειρωτική Τουρκία ως σαλονικιώτικα και οι τούρκοι μουσουλμάνοι απλά ως εβραϊκά αυγά (yamurta yahudi).

Κλασσικά συνοδεύονται από διάφορα μπουρέκια, (κλασσικά τα borrekitas di meredgena, τα μελιτζανομπουρεκάκια των οποίων την συνταγή είχα δημοσιεύσει εδώ), ή πίτες όπως η κρεατοπίτα και η περίφημη rodanchas de kalavassa (κολοκυθόπιτα). Τα ίδια τα χαμινάδος ορισμένοι τα καταναλώνουν σκέτα, άλλοι με λεμόνι ή επιπλέον πιπέρι και αλάτι αλλά αυτό είναι στο γούστο καθενός.

ΥΛΙΚΑ

6 και περισσότερα αυγά
Φλούδια από ξερά κόκκινα κρεμμύδια (πολλά)
Λίγο λάδι (όσο χρειάζεται για να απλωθεί πάνω από το νερό – μια με τρεις κουταλιές)
Μια κουταλιά ξύδι
Μισή κουταλιά αλάτι και άλλη μισή πιπέρι
νερό όσο χρειάζεται

(πολλοί προσθέτουν μισή κουταλιά ελληνικού καφέ, ενώ στην Τυνησία προσθέτουν φύλλα τσαγιού)

ΕΚΤΕΛΕΣΗ

Σε μια κατσαρόλα στρώνουμε τα κρεμμύδια και ανάμεσα βάζουμε όσα αυγά θέλουμε. Προσέχουμε τα αυγά να είναι σε θερμοκρασία δωματίου και στην συνέχεια προσθέτουμε όλα τα υπόλοιπα υλικά, νερό μέχρι να καλύψει άνετα τα πάντα και τελευταίο το λάδι. Ανοίγουμε την φωτιά και σιγά σιγά φτάνουμε σε σιγοβρασμό – τότε χαμηλώνουμε την θερμοκρασία στο χαμηλότερο δυνατόν ώστε να συνεχίσει το σιγόβρασμα με κλειστή κατσαρόλα για τουλάχιστον 4 ώρες ελέγχοντας που και που το επίπεδο του νερού. Η παραδοσιακή συνταγή μιλάει για τουλάχιστον 8ωρο αλλά δεν ξέρω αν όντως είναι απαραίτητο. Στην συνέχεια τα βγάζουμε, τα κρυώνουμε αμέσως κάτω από τρεχούμενο νερό ή σε μια γαβάθα με νερό και παγάκια και τα γυαλίζουμε ελαφρώς με μια πετσέτα.

Υπάρχει και μια παραλλαγή όπου χρησιμοποιείται ο φούρνος και τα υλικά παραμένουν τα ίδια – απλώς θερμαίνεις τον φούρνο στους 175° και κρατάς τα υλικά σε ένα κατάλληλο, κλειστό σκεύος για 6-12 ώρες. Για να προλάβω ενστάσεις γνωρίζω και την τακτική να φέρνεις γρήγορα σε βράση τα αυγά και μετά να σιγοβράζεις ή να τα βάζεις στον φούρνο αλλά δεν έχω πείρα με αυτό. Επίσης ο Ν.Σταυρουλάκης αναφέρει οτι στα Ιωάννινα, την Πρέβεζα και την Αρτα, (οι σημαντικότερες ρωμανιώτικες εβραϊκές κοινότητες), τα έφτιαχναν μέσα σε φούρνους όπου τα αυγά χώνονταν σε στάχτες και απο πάνω τοποθετούσαν ζωντανά αποκαΐδια. Επίσης στο βιβλίο με τις συνταγές της Κοινότητας του Βόλου τα αυγά με το πέρας των 6 ωρών τα αφήνουμε να ξεκουραστούν για 2 ώρες, ενώ δεν προσθέτουμε καφέ, αλλά πιστεύω οτι αυτό εξαρτάται από την παράδοση στο σπίτι του καθενός.

Στο τέλος θα έχουμε αυγά με μια ιδιαίτερη ελαφρώς πικάντικη γεύση και ένα υπέροχο χρώμα. Ανάλογα με το αυγό και την διάρκεια του μαγειρέματος μπορεί να υπάρχουν και κόκκινες φλέβες μέσα στο ασπράδι – γεγονός απόλυτα φυσιολογικό και κατά μερικούς επιθυμητό.

Οπως είπαμε τα χαμινάδος είναι στενά συνδεδεμένα με το Σαμπάτ και είναι, μαζί με τις πίτες και το ρακί, αναπόσπαστο κομμάτι του πρωινού γεύματος (desayuno) μετά την πρωινή λειτουργία (τεφιλά) στην συναγωγή όπως μαθαίνουμε από τον Μ.Μόλχο. Αποτελούν όμως και μέρος του πασχαλινού γεύματος, του Σέντερ του Πέσσαχ, τόσο σαν κομμάτι του συμβολικού δίσκου (δές την φωτογραφία), όσο και μέρος του γεύματος. Ειδικά το Πέσσαχ έχει επικρατήσει, μάλλον επιρροή από το χριστιανικό Πάσχα, να τσουγκρίζουμε τα αυγά και πλέον η επιλογή του αυγού έχει αναχθεί σε επιστήμη! Συχνά ενσωματώνονται μέσα σε άλλες συνταγές όπως σε μερικές εκδοχές από κρεατόπιτα ή στο ρολό κιμά με αυγά. Μάλιστα στην Κεφαλονιά ο τοπικός χριστιανικός πληθυσμός έχει πάρει αυτή την συνταγή και ετοιμάζουν αυγά χαμινάδος τουρσί διατηρώντας την ονομασία – η συνταγή φαίνεται ενδιαφέρουσα αν και δεν την έχω δοκιμάσει.

Το γεγονός οτι τα αυγά χαμινάδος αποτελούν αναπόσπαστο και χαρακτηριστικό κομμάτι της εβραϊκής κουζίνας αποτυπώνεται στην παρουσία τους στην εβραϊκή λαογραφία. Ενδεικτικά αναφέρουμε τον Τζοχά στο “La Valor del guevo haminado”, τον εβραίο ήρωα στις διδακτικές ιστορίες αντίστοιχο του Νασρεντίν Χότζα, όπου κάποιος ζητά αποζημίωση για τα κοτοπουλάκια που θα είχαν γεννηθεί από τα χαμινάδος που είχε φάει ο Τζόχα. Μια άλλη παροιμία για τον καφέ που χρησιμοποιείται και αντίστροφα λέει οτι Por ke el kafe sin komer dulse, i el guevo haminado sin sal, δηλαδή καφές χωρίς γλυκό είναι σαν χαμινάδος χωρίς αλάτι. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί οτι η κατανάλωση χαμινάδος αποτελούσε για την Ιερά Εξέταση στην Ισπανία σοβαρή ένδειξη οτι στην πραγματικότητα ο εβραίος δεν ήταν ένας ειλικρινής χριστιανός που είχε αλλαξοπιστήσει, ένας κονβέρσο, αλλά παρά ένας βρωμερός μαρράνος – ένας κρυπτοεβραίος δηλαδή.

Τα αυγά χαμινάδος ήταν και ο πρόδρομος των φίλων στο facebook: Στο Θεσσαλονίκη κατά την διάρκεια του Πέσσαχ είναι έθιμο τις δυο πρώτες ημέρες της εορταστικής εβδομάδας να επισκέπτεται κάποιος συγγενείς και φίλους. Προπολεμικά είχε επικρατήσει ο επισκέπτης να κρατάει ένα αυγό χαμινάδος από αυτά που του προσφέρονταν και όταν γνωστοί διασταυρώνονταν στην, τότε εβραϊκή πόλη, να φωνάζουν προκλητικά Diez y ocho ([έχω] δεκαοκτώ!) και τότε ο άλλος του απαντούσε υπερήφανα Yo Veinte ! (εγώ είκοσι).

Στο τέλος σας αφήνω με ένα λαϊκό περιπαικτικό τραγουδάκι για την Μαντμουαζελ Σαρίκα που αγαπάει τις καρότσες και μάλιστα αυτές με ρόδες από καουτσούκ, (σαν να λέμε οτι θέλει αμάξι, το θέλει και μερσεντές όπως μου εξήγησε ο Τζ.Μπ.). Η γειτόνισσα της όμως μάλλον πιστεύει οτι καλύτερα είναι να κάτσει και να καθαρίσει την κουζίνα της για να κάτσει να φάει ψωμί και κασέρι. Μάλιστα το κασέρι είναι ψητό και συνοδεύεται από αυγά χαμινάδος καθώς κάθονται στο μπαλκόνι

One of the most famous sephardic recipes, (although our romaniote jewish readers may protest that it’s part of their culinary culture too), are guevos haminados or simply eggs haminados with their characteristic red/brown colour and their slightly spicy taste.

The word guevos haminados, (or huevos enhaminados), for some means “oven eggs” and for others “warmed eggs”. In reality the word derives from the word “hamin” which in its own turn derives from the Mishnah verse tomnin et ha’hamin, ie to burry warm [the food]. Jews during the Shabbat are prohibited from lighting a fire; for this reason they usually prepare food that can be prepared from the day before and cook slowly overnight to be consumed hot the next day for the Shabbat. These foods are called hamin [ham:warm in Hebrew] and are a separate kind of recipes – their most illustrious representative in the sephardic kitchen is the eggs haminados. Altough in cooking there is no real meaning in the search of a homeland it is interesting to note that the Trieste Jews call them turkish eggs, the Jews in asian Turkey call them salonican eggs and the muslim turks simply as jewish eggs (yamurta yahudi).

Usually they’re served with different bureks like the borekkitas di meredjena that I had published here, or pittas like meat pie or the famous rodanchas de kalavassa (pumkin pie). Haminados themselves are consumed as is, others add lemon or extra pepper and salt but that’s up to individual taste.

GUEVOS HAMINADOS

INEXPEDIENTS

6 or more eggs
peels from red onions (many)
a little oil (just enough to spread over the water – 1 to 3 tb)
half a tb of salt and half of pepper
a tb of wine vinegar

(many add half a tb of greek ground coffee, while in Tunisia they add tea leaves)

Instructions

In a casserole we lay the onions and in between we place as many eggs as we want. The eggs should be at room temperature and then we add the rest of the ingredients, enough water to cover everything and in the end the oil. We begin heating until we reach a slow boil, we lower the temperature just to keep the boil going and we close the casserole for at least 4 hours checking the water level. The traditional recipe speaks of at least 8 hours of cooking time but I’m not sure that it’s necessary. Then we pull them out and we cool them off immediately under running water or in a bowl with ice water. With a clean towel we polish them and voilla!

We also have the oven alternative where an oven is used: the ingredients remain the same – we simply heat the oven to 175° Celsius and keep everything in a tightly closed recipient for 6 to 12 hours. There are also some different techniques like bringing the eggs to boil fast and then proceed with a slow boil but I’m not this much of a haminados guru to notice the difference. N.Stavroulakis also tells us that in Jannina, Preveza and Arta which were the main romaniote communities the haminados eggs were prepared by shoving them into ashes and keeping live charcoals ontop. Also in the recipe book of the Jewish Community of Volos the eggs lay to rest for a couple of hours after the 6 hour slow boil and we do not add coffee but I believe that this depends on the tradition each one follows in his own home.

As we said before the haminados eggs are closely linked with the Shabbat and together with the pies and some raki are an integral part of the Shabbat breakfast (desayuno) after the morning service (tefila) in the synagogue as M.Molho informs us. But they are also part of the Passover dinner, the Pessach Seder, both as a part of the symbolic ceremonial central plate (see the photo) and the meal itself. Especially for the Pessach it has become customary, probably due to christian Greek Easter influences, to bump ones’ egg with the one of the other and the one which remains intact “wins”; this has lead the selection of the egg of becoming a science ! As we said before they are often incorporated into other recipes like some versions of meat pies or the more famous meat loaf with eggs. In Cephalonia the local christian greek population has taken the recipe and they prepare haminados eggs pickled, maintaining even the name – the recipe seems interesting although I haven’t tried it yet.

The fact that the haminados eggs are an integral part of the the jewish cuisine is reflected by their presence in the Jewish folklore. Djoha in the story of “La Valor del guevo haminado”, the jewish correspondent of Nashredin Hodja’s didactic tales, deals with the request of compensation of the small chicks that might had hatched from a haminado egg. A saying about coffee that can be used both ways says that Por ke el kafe sin komer dulse, i el guevo haminado sin sal, ie coffee without a sweet is like a haminado egg without salt. We should also note that for the Holy Inquisition in Spain the consumption of haminados eggs was a telltale sign that the Jew was not a sincere Christian that had converted, a converso, but a filthy marrano – ie a crypto-Jew.

One could say that guevos haminados were the precursor of Facebook friends: in Salonica during the festive week of Pessach it was customary to visit friends and relatives. Before the war it had become a source for a sort of competition to collect an egg haminado from those offered during the visit; in the, then Jewish, town when friends met one another in the street they would call in a challenging voice Diez y ocho ([I have] eighteen) and the other would answer proudly “Yo ventie” (I twenty).

I leave you with a popular mock song of Mademoiselle Sarika who likes carriages with rubber wheels, (sort of like not only wanting a car but a Mercedes one like J.B. explained to me). Her neighbor isn’t probably of the same opinion and thinks she should better clean her kitchen and eat roasted yellow cheese with haminados eggs sitting in the balcony.

Στην προηγούμενη ανάρτηση μιλήσαμε για το τι σημαίνουν οι όροι “εβραίος”, “ισραηλίτης”, “ιουδαίος” και “ισραηλινός”. Την σημερινή εποχή οι λέξεις “εβραίος” και “ισραηλίτης” περιγράφουν ακριβώς το ίδιο άτομο και δεν έχουν καμμία απολύτως εννοιολογική διαφορά μεταξύ τους. Ομως, όπως γνωρίζουμε, υπάρχει μια περίεργη διάσταση μεταξύ του πως θα αποκαλέσει ένας χριστιανός έναν εβραίο, πως θα αποκαλέσει ο ίδιος ο εβραίος τον εαυτό του και πως το Κράτος.  Ολοι ξερουμε το “εβραίος” αλλά τότε γιατί χρησιμοποιούμε τον όρο “ισραηλίτης”;

Πιστεύεται οτι η χρήση του όρου “ισραηλίτης” ξεκίνησε στην Ευρώπη ως μια προσπάθεια να γίνει μια καινούργια αρχή την εποχή που οι εβραίοι έγιναν νομικά ισότιμοι πολίτες με την Γαλλική Επανάσταση και τους ναπολεόντειους πολέμους. Ο όρος “εβραίος/juif” με την πάροδο του χρόνου είχε γίνει μια υβριστική λέξη και ήταν συνώνυμη με τα γνωστά αντισημιτικά στερεότυπα – κάτι σαν το ελληνικό “οβριός”. Οπότε στην προσπάθεια να αποκοπούν οι νέες εβραϊκές κοινότητες από τους αρνητικούς συνειρμούς μετονομάστηκαν, με πρωτοβουλία των “μορφωμένων” κύκλων αποφεύγοντας την χρήση της “βρώμικης” λέξης εβραίος και ξανα-αποκτώντας το κύρος ενός λαού της Βίβλου μέσω του βιβλικού όρου “ισραηλίτης”. Η υιοθέτηση της λέξης έγινε σχεδόν έναν αιώνα πριν την δημιουργία του σιωνισμού και της θέσης οτι ο εβραϊσμός αποτελεί μια πολιτική εθνότητα και όχι θρησκεία, άρα η θεωρία οτι έγινε για να τονισθεί μια εθνοτική καταγωγή διαψεύδεται από την ίδια την Ιστορία. Δυστυχώς ο εθνοτικός προσδιορισμός που υιοθετήθηκε από το Ισραήλ είναι ισραηλινός και η φωνητική ομοιότητα με το ισραηλίτης δημιουργεί όντως προβλήματα.

Στο Dictionnaire historique de la langue française διαβάζουμε μια παρόμοια εξήγηση από τον γάλλο λεξικογράφο Ray:

«À partir du milieu du XIX s., le mot [juif] reflète la montée du racisme antisémite ; des lors, les emplois insultants en apellatifs, les synonyms injurieux et la création de dérivés péjoratifs sont plus actifs. À certaines époques, on a conseillé d’éviter le mot au profit d’israélite, plus neutre, mais il a été repris et revendiqué (conscience juive, renouveau juif), un peu à la manière de nègre»

Επίσης το ειδικό βάρος του όρου “ισραηλίτης” απεικονίζεται στην έκφραση un bon Israélite «άνθρωπος ειλικρινής και ακέραιος» (με αφετηρία την Κ.Δ., Ιωάνν. 1:47). Αρα δεν είναι παράλογο να υποθέσουμε οτι όντως η υιοθέτηση του όρου “ισραηλίτης” υπήρξε ένα είδος πρόδρομου politically correct της εποχής από τους μη-εβραίους της εποχής. Η χρονική εμφάνιση του όρου στην Γαλλία γύρω στο 1700 και η διατήρηση του ως τις αρχές του 20ου επιβεβαιώνουν την υπόθεση αυτή.

Η επιρροή της Γαλλίας στην ελληνική πολιτισμική παράδοση, (αντικατοπτρίζεται από την συμμετοχή της Ελλάδα στην Οργάνωση Γαλλοφωνίας μέχρι και σήμερα) και τα ήθη της εποχής που ζητούσαν “λόγιες” λέξεις οδήγησαν στην αποφυγή της αναπαραγωγής της “βρώμικης” λέξης εβραίος, (πολύ κοντινή στο σχεδόν υβριστικό οβριός) από το Ελληνικό Κράτος και τις εφημερίδες. Ετσι επικράτησαν ο εκλεπτυσμένος, γαλλικής και Βιβλικής καταγωγής γαρ, όρος “ισραηλίτης” και λιγότερο συχνά ο “ιουδαίος”. Η επιβίωση του όρου “ισραηλίτης” μέχρι σήμερα συνδέεται με την επιβίωση της καθαρεύουσας μέχρι τη δεκαετία του ‘70 και την συντηρητικότητα που χαρακτηρίζει το ελληνικό κράτος. Ας μην ξεχνάμε οτι δεν είναι η μοναδική περίπτωση επιβίωσης  όρου της καθαρεύουσας, πχ ακόμα χρησιμοποιούμε το Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες αντί του ορθού στη δημοτική Ενωμένες Πολιτείες. Αλλωστε οι Ισραηλιτικές Κοινότητες δεν έχουν καν την νομική δυνατότητα να αλλάξουν όνομα αφού η ίδρυση τους ορίζεται με λεπτομέρειες από τον νόμο 2456/1920 «περί ισραηλιτικών κοινοτήτων» που διέπει την λειτουργία τους

Συνοψίζοντας, η άποψη μου είναι οτι η επικράτηση του όρου στην Ελλάδα έγινε, (ο κάθε λόγος ισχύει από μόνος του ή σε συνδυασμό με τους άλλους):

1. λόγω της επίδραση της Γαλλικής κουλτούρας τόσο στην Ελλάδα, όσο και στον ίδιο τον Ελληνικό Εβραϊσμό μέσω της Alliance,
2. την αποφυγή του “βρώμικου” όρου εβραίος,
3. ο νέος όρος έδινε κύρος χάρη στην Βιβλική του κληρονομιά.

Οτι αποτελούσε ξένη προς τους εβραίους πρωτοβουλία, αν και όχι δυσάρεστη, ενισχύεται από μερικά γεγονότα που αφορούν τους αυτοπροσδιορισμούς που υιοθετούσαν οι ίδιοι οι Εβραίοι Ελληνες.

Ο πρώτος είναι η ονομασία του εβραϊκού πολιτικού κόμματος στις εκλογές του 1926 – “Εβραϊκή Πολιτική Ένωσις”. Ο δεύτερος είναι ένα κοινοτικό έγγραφο του 1943 στα ισπανοεβραικά όπου η κοινότητα αυτοχαρακτηρίζεται ως Communita Djudia de Thessaloniki. Επιπλέον έχουμε την παρουσία της δίγλωσσης εβραϊκής εφημερίδας La Tribune Juive/Το Εβραικό Βήμα το 1925. Καν σύγχρονα εβραϊκά ιδρύματα όπως το Εβραϊκό Μουσείο της Ελλάδας και το Εβραϊκό Μουσείο της Θεσσαλονίκης ονομάζονται “εβραϊκά” και όχι “ισραηλιτικά”. Από εκεί και πέρα προσφέρω και την προσωπική μου μαρτυρία οτι η εξήγηση που μου δίνονταν στην παιδική μου ερώτηση γιατί λέμε οτι είμαστε εβραίοι αλλά μας γράφουν ισραηλίτες (στα απολυτήρια του Δημοτικού, στα πιστοποιητικά γεννήσεως, στην ταυτότητα), ήταν οτι σημαίνει το ίδιο πράγμα αλλά είναι “πιο επίσημο”. Επίσης χαρακτηριστικό είναι ότι στα σημερινά εβραϊκά κοινοτικά έντυπα στην δημοτική οι εβραϊκές κοινότητες του εξωτερικού ονομάζονται όντως “Εβραϊκές” και μόνο οι ελληνικές κοινότητες συνεχίζουν να ονομάζονται “Ισραηλιτικές”.

Με άλλα λόγια το “ισραηλίτης” αποτέλεσε ένας εξωτερικός χαρακτηρισμός ο οποίος υιοθετήθηκε από τις εβραϊκές κοινότητες προς τέρψη τρίτων, ενώ οι ίδιες διατήρησαν το εβραίος/djudio. Η διατήρηση μέχρι σήμερα έχει να κάνει σχέση με τη συντηρητικότητα του Κράτους, την έλλειψη αντιδράσεων εκ μέρους του Ελληνικού Εβραϊσμού που άλλωστε δεν έχει κάποιο λόγο να αντιδράσει και οτι το “ισραηλίτης” εμφανίζεται πιο αριστοκρατικό οπότε πολλοί το υιοθετούν εν είδη πολιτικής ορθότητας (όπως παλιά θεωρούνταν στην Ελλάδα πιο πολιτικά ορθό να αναφέρεσαι σε “αθίγγανους” αντί για “γύφτους”).

Η μαρτυρία του Antonio Boari, στελέχους της Democrazia Cristiana στην Ιταλία είναι ενδεικτική για την κατάσταση στις αρχές του αιώνα όπου το “εβραίος” ήταν σχεδόν υβριστική λέξη:

Τότε – και εγώ το θυμάμαι καλά – ούτε που προφέρονταν η λέξη “εβραίος”. Και όχι μόνο αυτό, όταν δεν μπορούσες να το αποφύγεις χρησιμοποιούνταν η λέξη “ισραηλίτης” για να ξεχωρίσεις ένα διαφορετικό θρησκευτικό πιστεύω.

Κατά την ταπεινή μου άποψη αυτό το απόσπασμα συνοψίζει άριστα και το όλο θέμα.

This article, again in greek, deals with the establishment of the word “Israelite” to define officially the jewish population of Greece, instead of using the common appellative “Jew”. It explains how “Israelite” became the politically correct word in the 19th century since the word “Jew” had become a pejorative term and how Greece borrowed this word from the french language, (being under the french cultural egemony). Also it illustrates the reasons behind it’s survival today in Greece in a curious state where Greek Jewry addresses itself as “israelites” in official occasions and as “εβραίοι/jews” in all others.

Here’s a campaign against a proposed bill in Greece that institutes a domestic partnership contract but reserves it for heterosexual couples only. I fully acknowledge it’s truth and wholeheartedly support it – as it says civil rights for all!

A year ago Abravanel was born; to mark the occasion I thought of re-publishing my very first post. I’m also posting the stats of my most popular articles, (click to enlarge), which seem to favorite the how to insult a greek and how I learned what malakas means. Something not totally unexpected since I rank no1 in Google to the query “what malakas means” and find myself just in the 2nd page of the results for “malakas”. Not the accomplishments I wished for but alas… :-P

At least I find myself in page 12 when asking for “greek jews” though Plevris does a lot better than I do, again alas…

Anyway I’m not going to be overly sentimental about it but I’d like to say that this had been so far a great trip and believe me I’m just beginning to warm up! Thanks to everyone who has taken a minute to read any of the things I published, comment or send me an email. Know that I’m always open to suggestions – ξανά ευχαριστώ και καλή συνέχεια σε όλους μας!

I needed a first post to kick off this blog and here it is. To be reading this you probably came here knowing what you were going to see, so instead of telling you of what you’ll be seeing in the future I was thinking of telling you why this was born.

Well the reason is simply because the void that the Shoah created still exists out there over the dead but in a peculiar way also over the living. From the searching I’ve done with the exception of the institutional sites of the greek-jewish communities, which are almost always outdated, there are almost no sites or blogs concerning the Jewish life and history in Greece and the ones that do exist usually cover the past and not the present.

This void has given birth to a strange phenomenon: though Greece has never experienced a virulent antisemitism to the extent of some European nations, today is hailed as one of the most antisemitic countries in Europe. But, still, this climate doesn’t get translated into violent acts other than an occasional vandals on jewish monuments or the delirium of some far-Right but also, to my personal dismay, of far-Left public figures. On the other hand there is a complete void in the society about it’s jewish community and a strange defensive attitude though we’re talking only about 3000-5000 people in an 11.000.000 country, less than 0.045%. People are always ready to complain about how we’re always talking about jews And the Shoah And the world jewish lobby And And And… Still in all of my life I’ve never seen more than two times in the greek telly shows on the greek jews and a handful more about the Shoah which in 95% of the cases is foreign productions. Till 3-4 years ago there wasn’t a memorial day about the Shoah and the Shoah is not taught in schools. And when the jews of today are trying to restore some of the monuments left, like the synagogue in Chania, they receive threats by the local government and church with threats of physical violence! All this among the Middle East mayhem which makes the traditionally filo-palestinian public opinion rave literally with anger which gets reversed to all of the jews collectively being responsible for the often violent acts of Israel. I’m afraid to think what would happen if we didn’t rule Greece!

In any case this produces fear, fear to talk, fear to complain, fear to appear un-hellenic the same way in the ‘50s in the McCarthic USA one feared getting labeled as “un-american”. To top this we have a strange alliance between the Left and the Right where everyone attacks the greek jews and no one is saying anything to defend them; the conservatives because jews are known to conspire to become world leaders while the liberals see them as the long arm of the US! And in a country where every group has the sacrosanct right to block any street, the concerns of the local jewish community are treated as impertinent whines from people who want to disgrace the country.

This place is gonna hold some stuff I’m going to write over some episodes. It’s not going to be necessarily over current events and will not be “informing” you of anything, there are better places for that. It’s simply going to take specific events, often from the web, and comment on the imperceptible line that divides the greek society and we constantly trip every time we try to get over it.

Greek Government in it’s infinite wisdom still doesn’t get how the Internet actually works and gives me the opportunity to differ somewhat from the usual stuff I write about.

Recently a greek political blog by a known journalist was accused of being used as a means to blackmail known politicians and entrepreneurs. I have no idea on the veridicity of the accusations but given the rotten nature of the press system in Greece I have no reason to doubt, (or believe them). The Greek Government though, alarmed by the growing popularity of blogs, decided to take a stance against the whole phenomenon and has drawn the blueprint for a new law governing the functioning of the blogs.

Roughly it says that all informative blogs should loose their anonymity and post the name of their owner; plus other stuff like facilitating the police to track down bloggers etc. Anyway here’s a Press Release, (in greek), which I sign and expresses my personal views on the matter via yorgos.

Τις τελευταίες ημέρες παρακολουθoύμε με ανησυχία τη διαρροή στον Τύπο, με αφορμή τη γνωστή υπόθεση του blog press-gr, σχεδίων της κυβέρνησης για τη νομοθετική ρύθμιση της έκφρασης στο διαδίκτυο. Οι προθέσεις αυτές, αν ισχύουν με τον τρόπο που δημοσιοποιήθηκαν (συμπυκνώνονται σε έναν πρωτόγνωρο για τα διεθνή δεδομένα περιορισμό τής ανώνυμης/ψευδώνυμης έκφρασης μέσω ιστολογίων), πλήττουν θεμελιακά δικαιώματα κάθε πολίτη, δυνητικού χρήστη του διαδικτύου, παγιωμένα στη συνείδηση της ελληνικής κοινωνίας, αναγνωρισμένα από το Σύνταγμα της Ελλάδας αλλά και από το διεθνές δίκαιο. Οι διαρροές αυτές δεν έχουν μέχρι στιγμής επισήμως επιβαιωθεί, πλην όμως η μη κατηγορηματική διάψευσή τους από την Κυβέρνηση δεν επιτρέπει εφησυχασμό.

Ως Έλληνες πολίτες και bloggers, με διαρκή αγωνία για την ελευθερία της έκφρασης και του Τύπου, στον τόπο μας αλλά και σε όλον τον κόσμο, δηλώνουμε ότι δεν θα ανεχθούμε κανενός είδους ρύθμιση που θα φέρει την Ελλάδα κοντά σε διεθνώς δακτυλοδεικτούμενα μελανά παραδείγματα χωρών που καταπατούν τα ψηφιακά δικαιώματα των πολιτών τους, όπως η Κίνα, η Βιρμανία και η Αίγυπτος. Εξάλλου, υπενθυμίζουμε, εξακολουθεί να εκκρεμεί δικαστικά η υπόθεση blogme.gr, η οποία, ως απόπειρα ποινικοποίησης του απλού υπερ-συνδέσμου (link), μας εκθέτει στην παγκόσμια διαδικτυακή κοινότητα.

Διανύοντας μια εποχή κατά την οποία η ιδιωτικότητα συρρικνώνεται διαρκώς και τα κάθε λογής απόρρητα υποχωρούν σε βάρος των πολιτών, χάριν κρατικών και όχι μόνο σκοπιμοτήτων, και κατά την οποία το άτομο, ως μονάδα, συνθλίβεται από οικονομικά και επικοινωνιακά μεγαθήρια, διατηρούμε την πεποίθηση ότι η διαδικτυακή ανωνυμία ή ψευδωνυμία είναι στοιχειωδώς απαραίτητη εγγύηση για την εξασφάλιση τής ελεύθερης ατομικής έκφρασης, της πληροφοριακής αυτοδιάθεσης και του υγιούς δημόσιου διαλόγου.

Το ισχύον νομικό πλαίσιο επιτρέπει, υπό δικαστικές εγγυήσεις, την ταυτοποίηση ψευδώνυμων ή ανώνυμων χρηστών του διαδικτύου στις περιπτώσεις που τα συνταγματικά κατοχυρωμένα δικαιώματα στην ελεύθερη έκφραση και στην ιδιωτικότητα, σταθμιζόμενα με την ανάγκη προστασίας άλλων σοβαρών έννομων αγαθών, κρίνεται ότι πρέπει να υποχωρήσουν. Το καθεστώς αυτό, σε συνδυασμό με την αυτορρύθμιση των ψηφιακών κοινοτήτων, θεωρούμε ότι είναι επαρκές για την προστασία από έκνομες αντικοινωνικές συμπεριφορές που εκδηλώνονται μέσω του διαδικτύου.

• Επισημαίνουμε ότι η νομοθέτηση εν θερμώ και καθ’ υπερβολή εκθέτει τη νομοθετική διαδικασία για έλλειψη νηφαλιότητας, απροσωποληψίας και ρυθμιστικής συνοχής.
• Υπενθυμίζουμε ότι η κοινωνία των blogs δεν συνιστά κλειστή κάστα για λίγους, με συγκεκριμένα συμφέροντα, αλλά αποτελεί καθρέφτη όλης της κοινωνίας, ανοιχτό πεδίο έκφρασης για οποιονδήποτε πολίτη.

Συνεπώς,

• Καλούμε την κυβέρνηση να δηλώσει σαφώς τις προθέσεις της και να διαψεύσει απερίφραστα όσα είδαν το φως της δημοσιότητας τις τελευταίες ημέρες σχετικά με πρόσθετη νομοθετική ρύθμιση της ελεύθερης έκφρασης στο διαδίκτυο.
• Καλούμε το σύνολο των πολιτικών και κοινωνικών φορέων να λάβουν θέση απέναντι στα σχέδια αυτά και να διατρανώσουν την αντίθεσή τους προς οποιαδήποτε νομοθετική πρωτοβουλία στο μέλλον η οποία θα έχει παρόμοια παράλογα χαρακτηριστικά.
• Επιφυλασσόμαστε για στενή παρακολούθηση του ζητήματος και για ανάπτυξη κάθε μορφής οργανωμένης δράσης (επικοινωνιακής, νομικής, θεσμικής).

Το digitalrights.gr αποτελεί κόμβο πληροφόρησης για τα δικαιώματα του πολίτη στον ψηφιακό κόσμο.      Agit Prop/агит проп («αγκίτ προπ») derives from the word “agitazia” and “propaganda”; with the first aiming to instigate the heart and the soul of the receiving audience, while propaganda is the political argumentation which addresses his mind.

It’s also the name of a very good -greek language- blog whose authors have a keen interest on the jews of their hometown, Thessaloniki/Salonika. Among their various articles I’ve singled out those of greek jewish interest, (the first three being truly exceptional), although by no means fail to read some of their other stuff, especially if you’re concerned about Human Rights or advocate Open Source software/OS like myself!

I would be ungrateful if I didn’t admit that through this site I’ve had the chance to be wonderfully surprised by many people who seem to have the sheer recklessness to go against the mainstream views here in Greece. One of these people is touki8eblom, affectionately known as touki.

On this particular occasion the article that grasped my attention was a small but well documented essay on the widely spread myth that jews, (or Mossad, the israeli Secret Service), were responsible for 9/11. The rumor has it that 2-3-4-5.000 jews working in the World Trade Center were “alerted” and failed to show up that day for work; ergo jews knew about it or even organised it. This rumor began by a couple of  arab newspapers, was propagated by Al-Mannar which is Hezbollah’s TV station and picked up eventually by a couple of israeli newspapers as “evidence” of arab hysteria.

Until this moment we do not have anything really spectacular, just another story of propaganda that ends up backfiring on it’s authors. But here is where the fun begins… The leader of the racist LAOS party Y.Karatzaferis asks the greek Foreign Affairs Minister if he’s aware of the fact and asks that he should “inform his european counterparts”. Ok, maybe he got delirious, maybehe was just serving the needs of his racist clientele. The problem is that nobody seems to object to the question while at the same time the “discovery” of the presumably missing jews appears on many mainstream newspapers and many panelists in TV don’t hesitate to express it. We shouldn’t fail to note that many public figures like MP’s from Nea Dimokratia Chaitidis or Communist Party’s Chourmouziadis didn’t hesitate to adopt these views.

So it wasn’t really strange that various polls showed that an important slice of greeks believe in the jewish finger with percentages varying from 7% to 40% !

Anyway enjoy his post in greek which rebukes this myth with facts; a myth which I believe will become an all-favourite of mr.Karatzaferis similes! At the same time take a look in IosPress reportage on the matter which concentrates mainly in the course of the myth in the greek media.

Touki8eblom’s Post on jews and 9/11 “Our invisible antisemitism” (Ο αόρατος αντισημιτισμός μας)

In Jaywalker’s blog I happened to run on a post he did on a university study on bigotry; the post was so interesting that I decided to steal his find and post about it also here – no hard feelings I hope. :)

Vani K Borooah from the University of Ulster and John Mangan from the University of Queensland were the key authors in this rather interesting study. The study included 23 countries from the so called Western World; practically Europe, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The key question was:

“Would you like to have a person from this group as your neighbour?”

The 5 groups were: of a different race, muslims, jews, immigrants or foreign workers and homosexuals. The study didn’t only concentrate on this question but went on to analyse how bigotry was distributed between groups, how it related to the country in question, to political beliefs, unhapiness and other indices.

The results were unsettling both for the Western World and Greece. Copying the findings of the study:

The highest proportion of bigoted persons (bigotry count ratio) was in Northern Ireland and Greece – where, respectively, 44 and 43 percent of respondents did not want persons from at least one of the five groups as their neighbours – and the lowest proportion of bigoted persons was in Sweden (13 percent), Iceland (18 percent), Canada (22 percent), and Denmark (22 percent).

The value of the bigotry gap ratio – the mean, percentage amount by which the bigotry scores of all the persons was above the bigotry line (z=1) – was also highest for Greece (51 percent) and Northern Ireland (50 percent): not only did these countries have a high proportion of bigoted persons, bigots in these countries were, on average, more bigoted than in countries.

Greece scored second worse for people from a different race, universally worse for muslims, second worse for jews (with Spain being surprisingly first), 4th worse for immigrants and 4th worse for homosexuals. The troubling fact was that, while countries usually had some groups that they disliked in particular, Greece scored high in bigotry in all 5 groups; practicaly sharing a first place with Northern Ireland if we take into account all indices. Practically almost 1 out of 2 people in Greece would not like as a neighbour, at least, one of the aforementioned groups, (43.2% to be exact). Also the greek population of bigots is the most bigotted one on the whole western world.

Even after controlling for personal characteristics, the likelihood of a person being bigoted depended on the country in which he/she lived. With Northern Ireland as the residual country, and after controlling for personal characteristics, persons who lived in Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Sweden, and the USA were less likely to be bigoted (and strongly bigoted) – and persons who lived in Greece were more likely to be bigoted (and strongly bigoted) – than those living in Northern Ireland. The country effect for the other countries was not significantly different from zero.

What I didn’t expect for Greece was such a high degree of homophobia, equally high with the very catholic Italy and Ireland. I didn’t also expect such a high percentage for muslims but I imagine that the equation muslim=turk still works against muslim acceptance. At least immigrants were the most accepted from all groups, though still the rate of rejection was extremely high. As far as jews are concerned there weren’t any surprises with Greece being twice as judeophobic, as the media of the Western World. Interestingly enough, this was also the group were Greece differed more from the western media, scoring 97% more.

To tell the truth I feel that real percentages must be higher. The question was fairly straight-forward and at least some people must have dodged answering in a negative way against some groups, as not to appear racist. I doubt that this is the case in Greece as people still do not actually think that racist behaviors are socially unacceptable – I’m trying this moment to back this sensation with some tangible data.

Anyway still quite disturbing and as far as jewish presence is concerned verifies what we’ve been saying insofar. I’m even more troubled if I think that the paper didn’t included Roma; I tremble when I think what the percentages would be in that case. :(

DeviousDiva’s blog on Human Rights issues is fairly well known. Apparently it was doing such a good job that ignoble individuals which claim to be nationalistic greeks have searched the internet and found her real name. They posted it on a site of theirs, coupled with DD photos and names of people related to her. They urged to spread the word on this “scoundrel”, as they called her.

If someone doubts how twisted is the mind of these people, he has an answer now. I feel pity for these people and they should know that they’re the utter disgrace of Greece – shame for them and those who tolerate them.

My utmost solidarity to DeviousDiva who has been an inspiration to me and shown me that there are causes worth fighting for!
