Antisemitic Ministers and Holocaust deniers enter the new Greek government

A. What happened ?

Under international pressure over erroneous political decisions concerning the economic policy, the socialist government led by Yorgos Papandreou collapsed. A new government of national unity was formed led by former European Central Bank vice-president Lukas Papademos and supported by the majoritarian socialist party PASOK, the conservative Nea Dimokratia and the far-Right LàOS; the leftist SYRIZA and the Greek Communist Party have declined to participate. Although there is a long history of public antisemitism within all greek parties, it was usually kept under control by moderate leadership; these new developments mark the first time that the antisemitic far-Right gains institutional access and real power by entering in four ministries with one minister and three undersecretaries.

B. The recent history of the LàOS party

Until 2000 the greek Far-Right practically consisted of two major groups: the faction inside the greek conservative party of Nea Dimokratia and a small neonazi galaxy of groups in which the violent Chrisi Avgi, (Golden Dawn) was prominent. The domination of the two major parties, the conservative Nea Dimokratia and the socialist PASOK in which nationalistic and antisemitic sentiments were tolerated but also kept in check, gave grounds to the often cited but misleading assumption that a strong Far-Right does not exist in Greece.

All this changed when Yorgos Karatzaferis, a parliamentarian from Nea Dimokratia was expelled in 2000 when he accused the party leader of being surrounded by gays. Immediately after he created his new party called LàOS, (Popular Orthodox Rally), which managed 4 years later to enter the European Parliament and 3 years afterwards to enter the Greek Parliament.

Since it’s foundation LàOS has professed a double identity: on one hand it has made declarations generically condemning the phenomenon of antisemitism although never specific events and has even made isolated statements supporting greek-israeli military cooperation; it should be marked that these statements were directed to international Press and not to the greek audience in order to shake the label of an extremist.

On the other it has consistently flooded greek media with statements varying from the explicit acceptance of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion to statements saying that “the Jew smell blood” concerning Israel and Jews being responsible for 9/11, claiming world Jewish domination, Jews being Christ-Killers, expressing doubts over the Holocaust etc. Although Greek Jewry has expressly tried to stay outside political rivalries, the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece has repeatedly issued statements condemning various Karatzaferis statements.

C. Specific instances of antisemitism by party leader Y.Karatzaferis

There are literally hundreds of statements of LàOS top politicians in which they express antisemitism and credence to all kinds of weird conspiracy theories in which Jews are protagonists. Some are dead serious like the accusations that Jews are responsible for the greek debt, others are traditional Christian antisemitism like the Christ-Killers accusation while others are simply funny like the ones being responsible for every major greek disaster beginning from the Peloponnesean War:

1. Should there ever be a Greek Jewish politician, then he/she will owe allegiance to foreign powers – no Greek Jew must take part in government.
In 1996 as a mainstream conservative parliamentarian he accused Minister Christos Rozakis, (a Christian Orthodox whose 1 paternal grandfather was a Jew who converted to Christianity), of double allegiance after a campaign led by a neonazi newspaper. Apparently Jewish blood, diluted to 1/4 and baptized is still poison to Karatzaferis.

2. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion are true
On the Lisbon Treaty of the European Union: “Whatever is being described in the Protocols of Zion is becoming reality today. One Goverment, one currency for all of Europe. And this for me is the coming of the New Order of things.”,  Y.Karatzaferis in the Greek Parliament, 11/6/2008

3. He is proud that no Jews, gays or communists are part of his party and has accused many Christian politicians as crypto-Jews.
“First of all I am not a Jew; let’s see if the Prime Minister (Simitis) can claim this. Second of all I am not a communist; let’s see if Karamanlis (conservative party leader) can claim this. And third I am not gay; and there are not many people who can claim this”, speech made at 28th May 2002.

4. Jews are directly accused as Christ-killers.
“The murderers of GOD would ever care for innocent children? Their pure blood is soaking the flesh not of the Jews whose skin has acquired a sheath of impermeability…”, in the main article in party newspaper A1 4 January 2009

5. He has openly asked for neonazi party Chrisi Avgi to enter the greek government.
In this video one can see Yorgos Karatzaferis in his daily television show offering neonazis a ministry.

6. Jews are responsible for 9/11
Karatzaferis even asked for an official enquiry over the rumors of arab newspapers that 4000 American Jews did not go to the Twin Towers on 9/11. He repeated the claim multiple times in his television show, even challenging the israeli ambassador.

7. Speaking about Israel and the Cast Lead operation of 2009
“The Jews are transforming to the same ruthless killer as their perpetrator[the Nazi]“, “The blacklettered day the State of Israel was born”, “…more Jews practicing the ruthless policies of Zionism”,  main article in party newspaper A1 4 January 2009.

8. The Jews, the Vatican and the Peloponnesean War between Sparta and Athens.
A myriad of other statements like the “conspiracy of the Vatican and the Jews”, “Jews forcing their laws in countries outside their own”, “The New World Order expressed by the Jews”, “they [the Jews] print synagogues on banknotes”. A special mention goes to history lessons in which  Jews are responsible for the fall of Constantinople to the ottoman Turks in 1453. Even better is the revelation that Jews are responsible the Peloponnesean War of 431 BCE between Sparta and Athens.

I am certain that when his car hits a traffic jam he accuses the Jews of intentionally painting the traffic lights a communist red just to spike him.

9. An evergreen: Holocaust Denial
“…let’s talk about the myth of Auschwitz and Dachau and talk about these ovens, to talk about these gas chambers, whether the gas chambers were insulated to hold gas inside or they were simple bricks”. The specific excerpt is from 2001 but there are many occasions, especially in his daily television show when hosting his friend Plevris, eg here.

D. Antisemitism of the new LàOS ministers

1. Minister of Infrastuctures, Transport and Networks Mavroudis (Makis) Vorides

An avowed nationalist whose violent past is evident in his photo carrying an axe (! ) during clashes with leftist protesters. President of the youth faction of EPEN, a nationalistic party supporting the 1967 military junta, he later formed the antisemitic and nationalistic party Elliniko Metopo. Later on he joined forces with the man who has come to symbolize exterminationist antisemitism Konstantinos Plevris and tried to form a european alliance of antisemitic parties with the 1997 European Nationalistic Conference in which infamous LePen’s french Front National, dutch Vlaams Blok and spanish Frente Nacional took part. Here can one read his adventures in the murky waters of the greek far-Right.

In 2002 he expressed doubts over the authenticity of the Anne Frank diaries and said that he could not answer whether the Protocols of the Elders of Zion are true or false. He did say though that he had never met a Jew who shares his political ideas and he has absolutely no problem with the violent neonazi party of Chrisi Avgi

2. Under secretary to Growth, Competitivity, Maritime Affairs Adonis Georgiadis

A famous tele-evangelist with a popular TV show in Karatzaferis TV channel, he has made more than his fair share of antisemitic claims like the 2009 claim that “All major banks belong to the Jews” during a conversation with his brother in which they claimed that the Jewish Lobby held the keys to the greek foreign debt.

He also systematically publicized though his TV show and sold though his bookshop the most infamous antisemitic book ever to have been published in Greece, “The Jews, the whole truth” by neonazi Konstantinos Plevris. Here one can read an extensive report over the systematic promotion of the aforementioned book.

The new under-secretary is linked with a long friendship to Plevris and was hosted in Plevris TV show several times. Due to his support he has been called as a witness on behalf of the neonazi Plevris in a lawsuit brought against the leadership of the Greek Jewry.  In other words a minister of the greek government is called by a neonazi to defend his work which advocated the extermination of Jews against the Greek Jewish Community, after having extensively publicized the book in many shows.

Given the widespread doubts over the independence of the greek Justice system which has been proved to be sympathetic to antisemitic claims, one is left to wonder whether Georgiadis will resist the temptation to help his old friend and mentor.

E. Is the Jewish Community in Greece in danger ?

No more than it was yesterday, but a deterioration is expected. Arson attacks and vandalisms are common in Greece but since the palestinian attacks in Greece in the 80′s and the Al Qaeda bombings of the turkish synagogues there has been an effective synergy of both government-afforded protection and internal jewish security service; it is doubtful whether the LàOS politicians will risk violent outbreaks by antisemitic groups which would lead to international exposure.

There are three ways that the new found power of LàOS could hurt Jews, one that already has happened and two others hypothetical:

1. The first one is the LàOS has managed to make antisemitism mainstream.
When LàOS politicians cast doubts over the Holocaust or accuse Jews of handling the greek national debt they introduce vulgar antisemitic speech into the everyday discourse. These arguments existed before but they were considered populistic and vulgar-chick. Nowadays when Karatzaferis drops A-bombs like directly accusing Jews of killing the Christian God, then statements like Communist Party of Greece leader’s on “30 pieces of silver” offered by Israel go by largely unnoticed raising the bar of what is considered acceptable.

It should be highlighted that Karatzaferis owns a television station with national television coverage and a party newspaper; these two media outlets have accomplished more in the fight against Jews than any neonazi fringe group given their wide audience and constant flow of virulent antisemitism.

2. The new ministers are not likely to directly challenge the Jewish community, but will use their power to advance antisemitic policies.
Consistent statements of theirs point to the fact that they will use their influence directly or indirectly to oppose the recent introduction of the Holocaust in greek history book, (Greece considered the murder of +60.000 Greek Jews a non-greek event and did not teach in the greek school system until the mid-00′s).

The new ministers will probably use their influence to discourage attacks of far-Right antisemitic groups to Jewish targets in order not to escalate mounting opposition to them. Still it is possible to withdraw police protection to Jewish institutions in case of leftist aggression in order to score points with their political rivals who would appear more antisemitic than LàOS.

They will protect neo-nazis from police prosecution as seen with the Georgiadis support of Plevris. They will also foster a climate of tolerance of racism; for example it will be less likely for a greek organization to oppose antisemitism when it’s revenues will be partly controlled by the LàOS government members.

Jews in high-profile places will probably witness some discrimination in State-related jobs. Not necessarily because Voridis, Georgiadis, Rodoulis or Yeorgiou will follow a systematic antisemitic policy but because their presence creates a safety net for those mid-level government employees who foster antisemitic feelings. LàOS claims it seeks a Greece for Greeks and Karatzaferis favorite game is one day to say that Greek Jews are Greeks and another to say that they are not; one cannot realistically can expect otherwise.

3. In case of tension the Middle East they shall revert to time-honored antisemitic policies.
Experience shows that despite lip-service to greek-israeli military cooperation, in times of crisis they have consistently turned in order to please their antisemitic voters. During Cast Lead in 2009 when Greek Jewry suffered attacks in all major greek cities, including arsonist attacks in synagogues and cemeteries the LàOS leader unleashed one of the most vicious attacks mixing Greek Jews, Israel, USA and nefarious powers in a scheme to assassinate Palestinian children the same way Jews assasinated Christ. This attack warranted an un-precedented request to the President of the Parliament Siufas on behalf of the Central Board of Jewish Communities so that Greek Jews were not left at the mercy of the mob; sadly only one parliamentarian rose to the challenge settling the question whether antisemitism is embedded in greek society.

F. What to do ?

There are discussions on measures of protection to be adopted. I shall return with an article shortly.

In a nutshell

The huge economic crisis has created an opportunity for LàOS party to enter the government. It is not a party with some questionable remarks: it is a Holocaust denying party which is one step away from advocating measures that limit perceived Jewish influence in Greece – they actually believe in all kinds of jewish conspiracies. Still their number one goal is achieving power and they shall not endanger their position with openly antisemitic policies; they’re even capable of paying lip service with a generic condemnation of antisemitism or nominal support of greek-israeli military cooperation in order to shake the extremist label. The Greek Jews are not in any kind of imminent danger but antisemitism has become mainstream with unknown consequences for the future. It is inevitable that antisemitism will continue to rise with practical consequences doubting the progress made the past 15 years; Greek Jewry must acknowledge that the Greek State cannot guarantee its safety unless we admit that the wolves can protect the sheep. What measures should be taken its to be seen.

Αντιγράφω το κείμενο της Αντιναζιστικής Πρωτοβουλίας συμφωνόντας πλήρως μαζί της και στηρίζοντας τον Ιάκωβο Φριζή:

ΝΑ ΑΘΩΩΘΕΙ Ο Ι. ΦΡΙΖΗΣ ΣΤΗ ΔΙΚΗ ΤΗΣ 8 ΣΕΠΤΕΜΒΡΗ

Ο ναζιστής Κ. Πλεύρης μήνυσε τον Ι. Φριζή για συκοφαντική δυσφήμηση επειδή ο τελευταίος τον κατάγγειλε ως κήρυκα γενοκτονικού αντισημιτισμού σε άρθρο του που δημοσιεύτηκε στην εφημερίδα «Παρασκήνιο». Η Εισαγγελία Αθηνών δέχτηκε την μήνυση ως βάσιμη και άσκησε ποινική δίωξη εναντίον του Ι. Φριζή για συκοφαντική δυσφήμηση κρίνοντας ότι το σχετικό σχόλιο του «προσβάλλει» τον Κ. Πλεύρη. Το κλητήριο θέσπισμα αναφέρει πως το άρθρο του Ι. Φριζή ήταν ικανό να «πλήξει την τιμή» του Κ. Πλεύρη (!!!) επειδή τον παρουσιάζει ως «απάνθρωπο διώκτη των εβραίων, που δεν σέβεται το έννομο αγαθό της ανθρώπινης ζωής, όταν πρόκειται για εβραϊκής καταγωγής άτομα»

Ο Ι. Φριζής στο άρθρο του στιγματίζει πόσο αδιανόητη είναι η αθώωση του Κ. Πλεύρη στη δίκη του Μάρτη του 2009 για το εμετικό αντισημιτικό του παραλήρημα που περιλαμβάνεται στο βιβλίο-εγχειρίδιο γενοκτονίας με τίτλο «Εβραίοι, όλη η Αλήθεια». Ο Ι. Φριζής αναφέρει συγκεκριμένα ότι ο Κ. Πλεύρης υποστήριξε στη δίκη το απόσπασμα του βιβλίου του «Έτσι θέλουν οι Εβραίοι. Διότι μόνον έτσι καταλαβαίνουν: εντός 24 ωρών και εκτελεστικό απόσπασμα».

Αυτόν τον σχολιασμό ο Πλεύρης ισχυρίζεται ότι τον έκρινε ως «συκοφαντικό» η Εισαγγελία Αθηνών με βάση τα όσα αναφέρονται στην απόφαση του Α΄ Πενταμελούς Εφετείου Αθηνών τον Μάρτη του 2009 που αθώωσε τον Κ. Πλεύρη από τις κατηγορίες για πρόκληση ρατσιστικού μίσους και βίας.

Συγκεκριμένα, το Α΄ Πενταμελές Εφετείο Αθηνών με τη γνωστή σκανδαλώδη και παράνομη απόφασή του που αθωώνει τον γενοκτονικό αντισημιτισμό, μεταξύ άλλων, δέχτηκε την υπεκφυγή του Κ. Πλεύρη ότι η πιο πάνω φράση είναι δήθεν ρήση του Κλεμανσώ. Όμως, όσα υποστήριξε στη δίκη ο Κ. Πλεύρης για τους Εβραίους και όσα αναφέρει στο βιβλίο, συμπεριλαμβανομένης της συγκεκριμένης φράσης που βέβαια δεν είναι του αντι-αντισημίτη Κλεμανσώ, προτρέπουν σε εξόντωση των «επίβουλων» Εβραίων τους οποίους άλλωστε χαρακτηρίζει συλλήβδην «υπανθρώπους», και απειλή για τη «λευκή φυλή» και την Ευρώπη, φτάνοντας μάλιστα στο σημείο να κατηγορήσει τον Χίτλερ ότι «δεν απήλλαξε, ενώ ηδύνατο την Ευρώπη από τους Εβραίους». Πρέπει να σημειώσουμε ότι το δικαστήριο αγνόησε πλήρως όλες τις αποδείξεις των μαρτύρων της Αντιναζιστικής Πρωτοβουλίας για την κάλπικη πηγή του Κ. Πλεύρη από την οποία «αλίευσε» την δήθεν «ρήση Κλεμανσώ», δηλ. ένα μυθιστόρημα στο οποίο αναφέρεται μία αντιπαράθεση του Κλεμανσώ με συγκεκριμένους Εβραίους χωρίς να μνημονεύεται καθόλου η συγκεκριμένη φράση!

Με βάση την ίδια κατάπτυστη απόφαση του Εφετείου Αθηνών που νομιμοποίησε τη γενοκτονική προπαγάνδα της παγκόσμιας συνωμοσίας των Εβραίων κατά της ανθρωπότητας σαν αθωωτικό επιχείρημα όσων διακηρύττουν το ρατσιστικό μίσος και βία, η Εισαγγελία Αθηνών κρίνει τώρα ότι με το άρθρο του ο Ι. Φριζής συκοφαντεί τον Κ. Πλεύρη για τους εξής λόγους: επειδή δημιουργεί την «πεπλανημένη εντύπωση» στο αναγνωστικό κοινό ότι «διακατέχεται από θανάσιμο μίσος αδιακρίτως κατά των εβραίων» και ότι «δεν σέβεται το έννομο αγαθό της ανθρώπινης ζωής, όταν πρόκειται για εβραϊκής καταγωγής άτομα»!!! Έτσι κρίνει τώρα η εισαγγελία Αθηνών για τον άνθρωπο που έγραψε ότι «Εβραίος και άνθρωπος είναι έννοιες αντιφατικές δηλαδή η μία αποκλείει την άλλη» και ότι «Η ιστορία της ανθρωπότητος θα καταλογίση στον Αδόλφο Χίτλερ τα εξής: Δεν απήλλαξε, ενώ ηδύνατο την Ευρώπη από τους Εβραίους».

Μετά τις παράνομες αποφάσεις του Εφετείου Αθηνών και του Αρείου Πάγου που νομιμοποίησαν τη ναζιστική προπαγάνδα έχει ανοίξει ο δρόμος διάπλατα για τις ποινικές διώξεις κατά των δημοκρατών και αντιναζιστών. Αποδεικνύεται τώρα περισσότερο από κάθε άλλη φορά πως η ελευθερία του ναζιστικού λόγου καταργεί στην πράξη και στην ουσία της την ελευθερία της έκφρασης.

Η δίωξη κατά του Ι. Φριζή (που έχει και τη σημασία του ότι είναι γιος του ήρωα πρώτου νεκρού του αγώνα αντίστασης στην ιταλική εισβολή το 1940…) είναι σκανδαλώδης φασιστική και δεν πρέπει σε καμία περίπτωση να περάσει.

Η Αντιναζιστική Πρωτοβουλία καλεί όλους τους δημοκράτες να απαιτήσουν με την παρουσία τους στη δικαστική αίθουσα στις 8 Σεπτέμβρη να αθωωθεί ο Ι. Φριζής και να σταματήσουν εδώ και τώρα οι ποινικές διώξεις των δημοκρατών.

After known antisemite and Holocaust denier Konstantinos Plevris was acquitted in the greek courts over the remarks made in his book glorifying the murder of Jews, he engaged in a series of lawsuits which aimed to suppress the fight against antisemitism by the fear of penalization, (otherwise known as chilling effect). He has already sued the members of the Antinazi Initiative and continues now with the son of greek-jewish WW2 hero Iacovos Frizis. Already under way are lawsuits against members of the Central Board of Jewish Communities of Greece.

I publish above the statement by the Antinazi Initiative asking for the acquittal of Iacovos Frizis and I state my complete solidarity to him. In due time we shall speak more about the travesty of the greek Justice system and how the Greek State remains at the mercy of nazi-lovers and antisemites.

Θεσσαλονίκη:Συμπλοκή Εβραίων με αντισημίτη κατά τη διάρκεια βανδαλισμού/Salonica:Jews clash with antisemite over vandalism

πρώτος βανδαλισμός 17/6/11 - πηγή:ΚΙΣ

Οι βανδαλισμοί εβραϊκών μνημείων και οι απειλές εναντίων Εβραίων αποτελούν ένα συχνό φαινόμενο και σε αυτό το ιστολόγιο έχω επιλέξει να αναφέρω μόνο τα σημαντικότερα περιστατικά. Ακριβώς για αυτό το λόγο το πρώτο βανδαλισμό του Μνημείου του Ολοκαυτώματος στην Θεσσαλονίκη που συνέβη πριν ένα μήνα, την Παρασκευή 17η Ιουνίου, δεν τον ανέφερα γιατί ο βανδαλισμός εβραϊκών στόχων μέσω γκραφίτι αποτελεί μια μόνιμη κατάσταση οπότε επιλέγω να αναφέρω μόνο τις περιπτώσεις που ξεχωρίζουν ή που είναι ιδιαίτερα απειλητικές.

Ο πρώτος βανδαλισμός της 17/6/11 είχε την ιδιαιτερότητα οτι δεν έγινε από κάποια νεοναζιστική ομάδα, όπως αναφέρθηκε λανθασμένα, αλλά από χριστιανούς αντισημίτες που εξίσωσαν το Άστρο του Δαυίδ με την ναζιστική σβάστικα, αρνήθηκαν το Ολοκαύτωμα γράφοντας οτι είναι “Ψέματα” και θεώρησαν οτι οι Σοβιετικοί Εβραίοι έσφαξαν εκατομμύρια χριστιανούς στην Ρωσία (!), (σημειολογικά ενδιαφέρον οτι τα μισά ήταν στα Αγγλικά, αποδεικνύοντας οτι οι έλληνες αντισημίτες φρονούν τους Ελληνες Εβραίους τόσο ξένους ώστε νοιώθουν την ανάγκη να χρησιμοποιήσουν μια κοινή ξένη γλώσσα για να επικοινωνήσουν). Παρόλα αυτά το γεγονός οτι βρέθηκε κάποιος αντισημίτης με ένα μαρκαδόρο, δεν κίνησε ιδιαίτερα το ενδιαφέρον μου.

Το προηγούμενο Σάββατο όμως είχαμε ένα σημαντικότερο γεγονός στο οποίο δεν δόθηκε η πρέπουσα σημασία: το απόγευμα του Σαββάτου 16/7/11 ένας Ελληνας Χριστιανός προσπάθησε να βανδαλίσει το Μνημείο για δεύτερη φορά γράφοντας “Σιωνιστές=Δολοφόνοι” και εξισώνοντας το άστρο του Δαυίδ με την σβάστικα. Εκείνη την στιγμή όμως ήταν παρούσα μια ομάδα Γάλλων Εβραίων τουριστών που αντέδρασε, λογομάχησαν και ήρθαν στα χέρια. Τελικό αποτέλεσμα υπήρξε η επέμβαση της Αστυνομίας και η σύλληψη του δράστη.

Από δικαστικές πηγές, (h/t L.), μαθαίνω οτι παραπέμφθηκε στο Αυτόφωρο και τελευταίες πληροφορίες τον αναφέρουν ως “ιδιόρρυθμο” – προβλέπω μέχρι την δίκη να διαρρεύσουν και άλλες πληροφορίες περί μειωμένου καταλογισμού λόγω ψυχικών διαταραχών, εντίμου βίου, με κοινωνική προσφορά και άλλα παρόμοια ελαφρυντικά – ίσως να χρειαστεί να του κόψουμε και επίδομα, άλλωστε εναντίον των σιωνιστών ήταν.

Το παρόν περιστατικό αποτελεί το πρώτο περιστατικό σωματικής αντισημιτικής βίας που σημειώνεται τα τελευταία χρόνια στην Ελλάδα ή τουλάχιστον το πρώτο που αναφέρεται επίσημα μιας και υπάρχουν ανεπίσημες μαρτυρίες για πρόσφατες παρενοχλήσεις στο μετρό της Αθήνας ανθρώπων που φορούσαν το άστρο του Δαυίδ, όπως και τον ξυλοδαρμό ενός Ισραηλινού στην Κω από Αλβανούς μετανάστες το 2007. Είναι προφανές οτι είναι μεμονωμένο περιστατικό, αλλά ταυτόχρονα εντάσσεται πλήρως στο κλίμα αυξανόμενης ποσότητας και της ποιότητας του αντισημιτισμού στην Ελλάδα. Επίσης αξίζει επισήμανση η διαπίστωση οτι μόλις η εβραϊκή παρουσία έγινε περισσότερο εμφανής – μαθαίνω οτι χιλιάδες ευρωπαίοι Εβραίοι και Ισραηλινοί βρίσκονται ως τουρίστες στη πόλη – είχαμε την άμεση εμφάνιση περιστατικών.

Σεβόμενος τη στάση της ΙΚΘ, πιστεύω οτι αντί να τονίζουν την αυτονόητη ανάγκη τιμωρίας του δράστη από τα αναξιόπιστα ελληνικά δικαστήρια και την λήψη μέτρων προστασίας του Μνημείου, πιστεύω οτι θα έπρεπε να ζητήσουν την καθιέρωση επίσκεψης στο Εβραϊκό Μουσείο κάθε Δημοτικού και Γυμνασίου της πόλης, που στην συντριπτική τους πλειοψηφεία αγνοούν το ιστορικό σαλονικιώτικο χρέος για την καταπολέμηση του αντισημιτισμού και διατήρηση της εβραϊκής τους κληρονομιάς. Για τους φοιτητές δε προτείνω κάτι, αυτοί έτσι και αλλιώς φοιτούν σε ένα ανοικτό εβραϊκό αρχαιολογικό πάρκο ακόμα και αν δε το ξέρουν.

Vandalism of Jewish monuments and threats against Jews is a common phenomenon and in this blog I have chosen to mention only the most important events. That is the reason why the first vandalism of the Holocaust Monument of Salonica a month ago, on Friday June the 17th, went by unreported because vandalism through the use of antisemitic graffiti is a permanent situation so I feel the need to present only the cases which are particular or especially threatening.

The first vandalism of 17/6/11 had the particularity that it was not done by some neonazi group, as erroneously reported, but by christian antisemites who equated the Star of David to the nazi swastika, denied the Holocaust writing “Lies” and also writing that Soviet Jews had murdered million of Christians in Russia, (semiotically interesting is the fact that half was written in English demonstrating the fact that greek antisemites consider Greek Jews so foreign that they feel the need to use a common foreign language to communicate with them). Still, the fact that an antisemite was found with a pen and the will to spill hatred, did not really thrill me.

But last Saturday we had a more important event which was not addressed with the proper attention: on Saturday afternoon July the 16th a Greek Christian attempted to vandalize the monument for a second time by writing “Zionists=Murderers” and again equating the Star of David with the swastika. But at that moment a group of French Jewish tourists was present, argued with him and clashed quite violently. The final outcome was the intervention of the Police and the arrest of the perpetrator.

From judiciary sources, (h/t L.), I learn that he was indicted and will face trial during the week; the latest information say that he is “eccentric”. I predict that until the final trial takes place we’ll hear more attenuating circumstances like of his diminished capacity due to a mental condition, a white penal record, social presence etc; maybe we’ll even have to issue a small subvention, after all he was against the zionists

This incident is the first event of physical antisemitic violence taking place in Greece the past years or at least the first being officially reported since there are unofficial testimonies of recent harassments in the Athens subway of passengers wearing Star of Davids and the beating of an israeli on the greek island of Kos in 2007. It is obvious that this is an isolated event but contemporaneously an example of the growing, in quantity and quality, greek antisemitism. It is also worth noting that as soon as Jewish presence has become more prominent – I am told that currently thousands of european Jews and Israelis find themselves as tourists in the city – we have had the immediate rise in incidents.

While respecting the stance of the Jewish Community of Salonica, I believe that instead of emphasizing the need for the punishment of the perpetrator by the unreliable greek courts and for more measures of protection, they should ask for the institution of visits of all Elementary and High Schools of the city, which by large completely ignore the salonican historical debt to fight antisemitism and preserve Jewish history. For college students I wouldn’t like to propose anything since they already attend an open archeological jewish museum, even if they don’t know it.

Ο καλός, ο κακός και ο αφελής Μητροπολίτης/The good, the bad and the naive Metropolite

Η Εκκλησία της Ελλάδος οφείλουμε να ομολογήσουμε οτι παρά την αυστηρή ιεραρχική της δομή ποτέ δεν μπόρεσε να επιβάλλει την σκληρή πειθαρχία που αποτελεί την βάση άλλων χριστιανικών δογμάτων. Ακριβώς για αυτό το λόγο οι προσπάθειες να κριθεί η στάση της απέναντι σε φαινόμενα όπως ο αντισημιτισμός αποτελεί μια εργασία που είναι καταδικασμένη να διαψεύδεται συνεχώς από τις διάφορες τοπικές ιδιαιτερότητες ή προσωπικότητες. Τρεις σύγχρονοι Μητροπολίτες αντιπροσωπεύουν οτι καλύτερο, ότι χειρότερο και ότι πιο αφελές έχει να παρουσιάσει η Εκκλησία της Ελλάδας τον 21ο αιώνα: ο Μητροπολίτης Δημητριάδος (Βόλος) Ιγνάτιος, ο Μητροπολίτης Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ και ο Μητροπολίτης Θεσσαλονίκης Ανθιμος.

Έχω επαναλάβει συχνά οτι παρά το γεγονός οτι οι Εβραίοι στον Βόλο γίνονται συχνά στόχος ακροδεξιών και ακροαριστερών οργανώσεων με επιθέσεις στην Συναγωγή του Βόλου, ο Βόλος χαρακτηρίζεται από την διαχρονική και σθεναρή αντίσταση του σε αυτά τα ξεσπάσματα μίσους. Η ίδια η τοπική Μητρόπολη, πέρα από την βοήθεια που προσέφερε κατά την διάρκεια του Ολοκαυτώματος στην τοπική εβραϊκή κοινότητα και για την οποία έχει τιμηθεί δεόντως, συνεχίζει διατηρεί θερμές σχέσεις με επισκέψεις και συνεργασία σε κοινωνικές και πολιτιστικές εκδηλώσεις.

Αλλά αν τα ευχολόγια εναντίον του ρατσισμού είναι εύκολα, παρουσιάζει μεγαλύτερες δυσκολίες η καταδίκη του μίσους όταν προέρχεται από εξέχοντα μέλη της Εκκλησίας – ελάχιστοι δεν διστάζουν. Όταν ζητήθηκε από τον Μητροπολίτη Δημητριάδος Ιγνάτιο να σχολιάσει τις δηλώσεις ακραίου αντισημιτικού μίσους του Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ τον περασμένο Δεκέμβριο αυτός δήλωσε:

Ο ρατσισμός και ο αντισημιτισμός, από όπου και από οποιονδήποτε και αν προέρχονται, δεν μπορούν να εκφράζουν την πίστη και την αυτοσυνειδησία της Εκκλησίας. Ιδιαίτερα τούτες τις ημέρες, οι Ορθόδοξοι χριστιανοί δεν λησμονούμε ότι ο Κύριος μας Ιησούς Χριστός γεννήθηκε Εβραίος, ενώ κανείς δεν δικαιούται να προσβάλλει τη μνήμη των 6.000.000 αθώων θυμάτων του ολοκαυτώματος. Από τη φάτνη του Θεανθρώπου που ταπεινά γεννάται στην Βηθλεέμ ανατέλλει ελπίδα και φως και όχι φόβος και συνωμοσιολογίες εναντίον του οποιουδήποτε. Η διαχρονική συνείδηση της Εκκλησίας εκφράζεται από το παράδειγμα μεγάλων ιεραρχών, όπως του Αρχιεπισκόπου Δαμασκηνού, του Ζακύνθου Χρυσοστόμου και του αειμνήστου προκατόχου μας Ιωακείμ, που ο καθένας με τον τρόπο του, και από γνήσια χριστιανικά αισθήματα παρακινούμενος, συνέβαλε στη σωτηρία χιλιάδων Ελλήνων Εβραίων. Αυτή είναι η παράδοση της Ελληνικής Ορθόδοξης Εκκλησίας, αυτήν ακολουθούμε».

Όταν κάποιος καταδικάζει κάτι μπορεί να το κάνει ψιθυρίζοντας με μια γραπτή αδύναμη δήλωση που παίζει τον ρόλο του φύλλου συκής, είτε να χρησιμοποιήσει λόγια που θα ηχήσουν δυνατά. Η δήλωση του Δημητριάδος Ιγνάτιου είναι μια τέτοια δήλωση που δεν ψιθυρίζει αλλά χρησιμοποιώντας την ιδιαίτερη εκκλησιαστική φρασεολογία “φωνάζει”. Δε μπορώ παρά να συγχαρώ τον Μητροπολίτη για το θάρρος του και την αγάπη του προς τους συμπολίτες του, μια στάση η οποία του έχει ήδη κοστίσει αφού αντιμετωπίζει δριμεία κριτική από σκοταδιστικά χριστιανικά σωματεία του Βόλου αλλά και στο Διαδίκτυο.

Η ίδια η Ισραηλιτική Κοινότητα πάντως φρόντισε δημόσια να ευχαριστήσει τον Μητροπολίτη, (αν και με αυτό το ποιμενάρχης υπερέβαλε ελαφρώς):

Ο Κακός

Ο Μητροπολίτη Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ μισεί τους Εβραίους. Ψέματα, όχι απλώς τους μισεί αλλά τους απεχθάνεται με ένα τρόπο που μόνο θυμίζει συντάκτη της ναζιστικής εφημερίδας Der Stürmer που πρέπει να δικαιολογήσει τον μισθό του στους αντισημίτες πελάτες του. Βέβαια στην συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση η ειρωνεία εντοπίζεται στην διαπίστωση οτι εργοδότης αυτού του δημόσιου υπάλληλου είμαι εγώ μέσω των φόρων μου, όπως χιλιάδες ακόμα Εβραίοι Ελλήνες ακυρώνοντας στην πράξη την συνταγματική επιταγή της ισονομίας. Μπορεί να έγινε διεθνώς γνωστός πριν λίγους μήνες αλλά το παρόν ιστολόγιο είχε κατά καιρούς αναφέρει δηλώσεις τόσο τερατώδεις που αν δεν ανήκαν σε υψηλόβαθμο ιεράρχη της Ελληνικής Εκκλησίας θα τις τοποθετήσει ανάμεσα σε τηλεοπτικά υποπροϊόντα όπως την Ελένη Λουκά, τον Μr.Εθνικά Μπούτια και τον Εισαγγελέα Λεωτσάκο – ρίξτε μια ματιά στο “Μητροπολίτης Σεραφείμ: κατω οι εωσφοροσιωνιστές εβραίοι”.

Οι Σιωνιστές βρίσκονται παντού αλλά ο δαιμόνιος Μητροπολίτης δεν επιτρέπει παρεξηγήσεις σε ποίους αναφέρεται: Η δϊιστορική διαστροφή των Ραββίνων και των ηγετών του Εβραϊκού έθνους λέει και συνεχίζει λάβρος κατά του τηλεοπτικού σταθμού Σκάι, όργανο των αμερικανοσιωνιστών, (όρος που ιστορικά συνδέεται με την ελληνική αντισημιτική ακροδεξιά εξολοθρευτικού τύπου, ενίοτε και ναζιστικού). Πάλι καλά βέβαια, πέρσι είχε κατηγορήσει το Μέγκα και τους Εβραίους οτι ευθύνονται για τα επεισόδια μετά την δολοφονία Γρηγορόπουλου επειδή προέβαλαν την ταινία Ο Κώδικας Ντα Βίντσι.

Στις τελευταίες δηλώσεις του δηλώνει την αλληλεγγύη στον Μ.Θεοδωράκη και ξεσπαθώνει ενάντια στους Σιωνιστές που ελέγχουν πανεπιστήμια, επιχειρήσεις, το οδικό δίκτυο, τα χωράφια, το νερό, τα νοσοκομεία και ότι άλλο βάζει ο νους σας. Μόνο η ΕΒΓΑ της γειτονιάς ανθίσταται κατά τον σεβάσμιο Μητροπολίτη. Μόνη διαφορά; Η λατρεία προς τους Αγανακτισμένους που σημειώνει και ο Dikra.

Δυστυχώς ο Μητροπολίτης Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ αποτελεί αυθεντικό εκφραστή της μακραίωνης αντισημιτικής παράδοσης της Ορθοδοξίας αλλά ξεχωρίζει για την φαντασία άνευ ορίων και την πορνογραφική μανία του με τον Σιωνισμό και τους Εβραίους. Άλλωστε προς τιμή του ο μετρητής των επισκέψεων του παρόντος ιστολογίου στην αριστερή στήλη μετράει ήδη από το 2009 “εωσφοροσιωνιστές” και όχι απλά “επισκέπτες” τιμώντας την ευρηματικότητα του Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ να εφευρίσκει νέες μορφές έκφρασης στο ίδιο αιώνιο μίσος.

Από καρδιάς του εύχομαι σύντομα ο εβραίος Στίβεν Σπίλμπεργκ να αναγνωρίσει το ταλέντο του και να τον προσλάβει σαν σεναριογράφο για την νέα του ταινία – στα δεξιά μπορείτε να δείτε την αφίσα που παρουσιάζεται για πρώτη φορά.

Ο αφελής

Ο Μητροπολίτης Θεσσαλονίκης Άνθιμος είναι και αυτός παλιός γνώριμος του ιστολογίου – το 2008 είχαμε αναφερθεί στις δηλώσεις του οτι τα αρχεία της Μητρόπολης Θεσσαλονίκης δείχνουν ξεκάθαρα οτι κανείς Χριστιανός δεν συνεργάσθηκε με τους Γερμανούς κατακτητές στην λεηλασία των περιουσιών και της πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς της δισχιλιετούς εβραϊκής σαλονικιώτικης κοινότητας. Στην ίδια ανάρτηση είχαμε αναφερθεί στην παλαιότερη δήλωση του ότι κανείς Εβραίος δεν έχυσε το αίμα του στο έπος του ’40 και στην ευγενική του παράκληση να ξεκουμπιστούν οι Εβραίοι από την χώρα τους και να πάνε στην πραγματική πατρίδα τους, το Ισραήλ.

Τότε είχα θεωρήσει οτι μόνο ο αντισημιτισμός θα μπορούσε να εξηγήσει τόσα μαζεμένα ψέματα και είχα ζητήσει να ανοίξει τα αρχεία της Μητρόπολης Θεσσαλονίκης. Τελικά αποδείχθηκε οτι είχα βιαστεί να τον χαρακτηρίσω και οι δηλώσεις του βασίζονταν απλώς στην άγνοια για την ιστορία της πόλης, της οποίας την χριστιανική κοινότητα υπηρετεί.

Με μια κίνηση που προϋποθέτει θάρρος, λέξη θάρρος δεν χρησιμοποιείται ειρωνικά αλλά με πλήρη εκτίμηση στην πράξη του, άνοιξε τα αρχεία της Μητρόπολης Θεσσαλονίκης που αφορούν τον Β’ΠΠ στον εξαιρετικό ιστορικό Β.Ριτζαλέο. Παρά το γεγονός οτι η συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των αρχείων φαίνεται να έχει αφαιρεθεί, πιθανότατα χωρίς παρέμβαση του Μητροπολίτη Άνθιμου αλλά μάλλον των προκατόχων του, αυτά που έμειναν μιλάνε για μαζική συμμετοχή της Μητρόπολης Θεσσαλονίκης στην λεηλασία της εβραϊκής πολιτισμικής κληρονομιάς, κυρίως μέσω της χρήσης δεκάδων χιλιάδων σκαλισμένων ταφόπλακων στην ανακατασκευή δεκάδων εκκλησιών της πόλης χωρίς αυτό να αποκλείει την αποδοχή εβραϊκών αντικειμένων αξίας όπως πολυελαίων. Επειδή ουδείς βάζει τα χέρια του να βγάλει τα μάτια του, οφείλω να ομολογήσω οτι έσφαλλα και οι αντισημιτικές δηλώσεις του παρελθόντος δεν οφείλονται στην απέχθεια τους προς τους Εβραίους αλλά πιθανότατα στην λανθασμένη όπως αποδεικνύεται πίστη του στο ποίμνιο και την Μητρόπολη του. Παρόλα αυτά είναι ενδεικτικό της πλάνης στην οποία πιστεύουν ειλικρινά αξιωματούχοι της Εκκλησίας και οι οποίοι καταλήγουν άθελα τους να αποκαλύψουν την αμαρτωλή κληρονομιά τους.

Τρεις ιεράρχες μεταξύ τους τόσο διαφορετικοί για μια Εκκλησία της Ελλάδος που δέχεται να είναι δέσμια ενός σκοτεινού παρελθόντος, αρνούμενη να οδηγηθεί από το παράδειγμα θάρρους του Αρχιεπισκόπου Δαμασκηνού παρά δεχόμενη να είναι υποτελής από τους αντισημίτες οπαδούς του Κοσμά του Αιτωλού.

One must admit that despite the strict hierarchical structure of the Christian Orthodox Church of Greece, it has proven impossible to impose a strict discipline which forms the basis of other christian dogmas like the Catholic Church. This has been the reason why all efforts to emit a judgement on its stance on matters like antisemitism are doomed to failure, always influenced by local pecularities and personalities. Three contemporary Metropolites, the highest rank possible, represent all the best, all the worst and all the most naive the Church of Greece has to offer in the 21st century: the Metropolite of Volos Ignatios, the Metropolite of Piraeus Serafim and the Metropolite of Salonica Anthimos.

I’ve often said here that despite the fact that the Jews in the city of Volos have often become targets of far-right and far-left organizations with attacks on the Synagogue of Volos, the city itself is characterized by its resistance to these outbreaks of hate. The local Metropolis, besides the help it offered during the Holocaust/Shoah and for which it has been acknowledged and honored, it continues maintaining warm relations with visits and cooperation in social and cultural events.

But if generic condemnations of racism are easy, it proves more difficult to condemn hatred if responsible are high ranking members of the Church; only a few dare not to back down. When the Metropolite of Volos, Ignatios was asked to comment on the views of extreme antisemitic hatred by fellow Metropolite of Piraeus Serafim last December he said:

Racism and antisemitism, from whoever and wherever they originate, cannot express the faith and self consciousness of the Church. Especially these days Orthodox Christians do not forget that Our Lord Jesus Christ was born a Jew and nobody is allowed to offend the memory of 6000000 innocent victims of the holocaust. From the cradle of Jesus who is being born in Bethlehem rises hope and light and not fear and conspirationism against anybody. The timeless consciousness of the Church is expressed by the example of great leader like ArchMetropolite Damaskinos, Metropolite of Zakinthos Christostomos and our predeccessor Ioakim who each one with his own way and with real christian feelings assisted in the saviour of thousands of Greek Jews. This is the tradition of the Greek Orthodox Church, this we follow.

It is a widespread practice for public figures when in need to condemn something to do it either with a weak written statement to act as a future fig leaf, or to use words which will reach the ears loud and clear. The statement of Metropolite Ignatios is such a statement and it does not whisper but shouts through its ecclesiastical phraseology. I cannot but congratulate the Metropolite for the courage and love he harbors for his townsmen; a stance that has cost him dearly since he is under heavy criticism by fundamentalist christian clubs of Volos and also receiving threats on the internet.

The local Jewish Community has thanked him profusely in public, (to an exaggerated extent perhaps) – here is the greek text of the letter:

The bad

The Metropolite of Piraeus Serafim hates the Jews. To be honest he does not simply hate them but he loathes them in a manner which reminds of an editor of nazi newspaper Der Stürmer who has to justify his paycheck to his antisemitic clients. In this case the irony lies in the fact that the employer of this public official is me and all the other thousands of Greek Jews through their taxes since orthodox priests and paid by the Greek State, (but not the rabbis making a mockery of the Constitution). He may have reached international fame only some months ago but this blog has often referred to his statements that if they didn’t belong to a high ranking official of the Church they could only belong to trash-TV shows; just take a look my older post “Metropolite Serafim: down with the satanzionists Jews”.

The Zionists are everywhere but the laborious Metropolite does not leave room for any misunderstandings of who he really means: “The historical perversion of the Rabbis and the leaders of the Jewish People” he says and continues against the greek tv station Skai which “is an organ of the americanozionists”, (a term which traditionally has been used by the antisemitic far-right and the greek neonazis). To tell the truth in this occasion one might claim that he was even moderate; in another occasion he has accused another greek tv station of the widespread riots that shook Athens last year after the murder of a 15yr old child by a policeman because it has transmitted the movie “The DaVinci Code”.

In his most recent statements he  proclaims his solidarity to known antisemite composer M.Theodorakis, he denounces the Zionists who control the universities, the businesses, the road network, the farming fields, the water, the hospitals and whatever else you can think of. Only the local 9-11 is resisting the zionist takeover if one is to believe the Metropolite. Their only difference ? His new found love for the Aganaktismeni movement which has invaded the greek squares lately, as Dikra notes.

Unfortunately the Metropolite of Piraeus Serafim is an authentic representative of of the centuries-old antisemitic tradition of the Christian Orthodox world but what truly makes him special is his pornographic mania with Zionism and the Jews. In his honor the visitors counter in the left counter of the blog reads since 2009 “satanozionists” instead of “visitors” in order to honor his inventiveness in finding new ways to express the same timeless hatred.

I can only wish him from the bottom of my heart that the jew Steven Spielberg soon recognizes his talent and hires him as a script writer for his new movie – to your right you can see the poster which appears for the first time.

The naive

The Metropolite of Salonica, Anthimos is an old acquaintance of the this blog – back in 2008 I had written a brief piece on his statements that the Archives of the Metropolis show that no Christian was involved in the looting of the assets and cultural heritage of the 2000 year old salonican jewish community and none had collaborated with the Germans. In the same post I linked to older statements of his, that claimed that the Greek Jews has not fought with the Greek Army during WW2 and his less-than-cordial invitation to leave their homes and go to their true homeland, Israel.

At the time I had considered antisemitism as the only possible explanation for so many lies bundled up together and I had asked him to open the archives of the Metropolis. As it turns out my judgement was premature and his statements were based simply on the ignorance of the story of the city whose christian community he serves.

With a gesture that demands courage, a word which I do not use as an irony but with appreciation, he opened up the Archives of the Metropolis of Salonica concerning WW2 to the excellent historian V.Ritzaleos. Despite the fact that the vast majority of the relevant files have been removed, probably not by Anthimos but by his predecessors, those who remain speak of mass collaboration of the Metropolis of Salonica in the looting of the jewish cultural heritage; mainly with the use of tenths of thousands of jewish tombstones for the renovation of the city’s churches without excluding the acceptance of valuable jewish property like chandeliers. Because I do not believe that anyone is willing to commit political suicide, I must admit that I was wrong and his antisemitic statements are not to be attributed to his hatred for the Jews but to his erroneous faith to his flock and his Metropolis. Still, this is indicative of the vast and deep ignorance which pervades Church officials who believe so much in their benevolence that they unwillingly contribute to their self-incrimination.

Three Metropolites so different among them but all members of the same Orthodox Church of Greece who accepts being kept captive by a dark past, refusing to be illuminated by the virtuous example of ArchMetropolite Damaskinos who fought for the survival of Jews during WW2 but accepting to be slave to the mindless antisemitic fans of Cosmas the Aetolian figure.

“Εβραίοι Θα Πεθάνεται” (sic), “Εβραίοι Κουφάλες Ερχονται Κρεμάλες“, “Εδώ ΠΑΣΟΚ και ΝΔ“, ζωγραφιές από κρεμάλες και άλλα τέτοια ωραία υπήρξαν η καινούργια σοδιά από τα συνθήματα που άγνωστοι έγραψαν στους τοίχους της Συναγωγής και των γραφείων της κοινότητας στον Βόλο το βράδυ του Σαββάτου.

Το φαινόμενο δεν είναι νέο και συχνά γράφονται διάφορα στους εξωτερικούς τοίχους της αυλής του οικοπέδου που περιλαμβάνει την Συναγωγή του Βόλου και κοινοτικά γραφεία, (η πιο διάσημη περίπτωση υπήρξε πριν 1,5 χρόνο όταν ρατσιστές του αριστερού χώρου στοχοποίησαν τους Εβραίους του Βόλου με αυτόν τον τρόπο, χωρίς να ξέρουν καν οτι οι Εβραίοι Βολιώτες μιλάνε ελληνικά).

Ποιό το νέο; Οτι αυτή τη φορά δεν περιορίστηκαν στον εξωτερική μεριά που βλέπει στον δρόμο, αλλά πήδηξαν τον ψηλό εξωτερικό τοίχο και προχώρησαν στην αναγραφή απειλών και σε μικροβανδαλισμούς στο εσωτερικό των εγκαταστάσεων αδιαφορώντας για τα επιπλέον μέτρα ασφαλείας που έχει πάρει η Ισραηλιτική Κοινότητα Βόλου από την προηγούμενη φορά. Τις απειλές συμπλήρωσαν η εθνικοπρεπής διαγραφή θρησκευτικών συμβόλων όπως τα Μαγκέν Δαυίδ/Αστρων του Δαυίδ, ζωγράφισμα χριστιανικών σταυρών και αναγραφή του “Ελλάς”.

Η παρούσα κλιμάκωση των απειλών γεννά απορίες μιας και ο Βόλος, μέχρι πρόσφατα, υπήρξε ένα πετυχημένο παράδειγμα αρμονικής συμβίωσης που ξεκινούσε με την ύπαρξη σπουδαίων βολιώτων πολιτικών πριν τον πόλεμο όπως ο Μαυρίκιος Κοφινάς ή την συνεισφορά της σιωνιστικής σοσιαλιστικής οργάνωσης Εργάτες της Σιών στο τοπικό Εργατικό Κίνημα. Συνεχίστηκε με την βοήθεια των Χριστιανών του Βόλου κατά την διάρκεια του Ολοκαυτώματος, ενώ σήμερα συνεχίζεται με πολλές εκδηλώσεις αλλά και κοινωνικό ακτιβισμό της Κοινότητας όπως οι πρόσφατες υποτροφίες σε φοιτητές του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσσαλίας, (ρίξτε μια ματιά στον σύνδεσμο αξίζει να τον διαβάσετε). Δεν είναι τυχαίο οτι οτι 5 οδοί στον Βόλο έχουν εβραικές ονομασίες που καλύπτουν το σύνολο της δημόσιας συνεισφοράς της τοπικής εβραϊκής κοινότητας : η οδός Μωυσέως που στεγάζεται η Συναγωγή, η οδός Παλαιστίνης προς τιμή του σιωνιστικού κινήματος, η οδός Αβραάμ Μπεναρόγια τιμώντας την εβραϊκή συμβολή στην δημιουργία της ελληνικής Αριστεράς, την οδό ραβίνου Μωυσή Σ.Πέσσαχ τιμώντας την συμβολή του στους εθνικούς αγώνες και πρόσφατα η οδός Μαυρίκιου Κοφινά που προσέφερε τόσα πολλά στον Βόλο.

Η Ισραηλιτική Κοινότητα Βόλου κατέθεσε μήνυση κατά αγνώστων και μαζί με την ίδια την Πόλη του Βόλου θα φροντίσει ώστε η ρητορική της βίας να μείνει ρητορική και να μην κλιμακωθεί σε πράξεις βίας όπως αυτές που έχουμε δει στα Χανιά, την Κέρκυρα, την Βέροια, την Θεσσαλονίκη και τα Ιωάννινα.

“Jews you will die”, “Jewish assholes, the gallows are coming” “Here is PASOK and Nea Dimokratia”, pictures of the gallows and other similar niceties are the latest crop of antisemitic graffiti unknown perpetrators sprayed on the walls of the Synagogue of the greek city of Volos, home to a tiny Jewish community, on Saturday night.

Similar episodes occur frequently with antisemitic graffiti written on the exterior wall of the compound which houses the Synagogue and communal offices, (the most famous was one of 1,5 years ago, when leftist racists targetted the city’s Jews, without even knowing that the Jews of Volos speak Greek).

What are the real news ? That this time they didn’t limit themselves to simply defacing the outer wall but climbed the tall walls and proceeded to writing threats, antisemitic insults and inflicting minor vandalisms inside the premises showing complete indifference to the added security measures the community had adopted since last time. The threats were accompanied by nationalistic slogans like crossing out of religious symbols like Magen Davids/Stars of David, the painting of christian crosses and the writing of the word Greece.

This escalation of threats and boldness generates questions since Volos, until recently, has been a successful example of peaceful cohabitation which began with the presence of important voliote politicians like Mavrikios Kofinas or the contribution of the socialist zionist Workers of Zion to the local Workers Movements. It continued with the help of many Christians during the Shoah, while today it continues with many events and social activism on behalf of the Community like the recent scholarships it awarded to students of the local University of Thessaly, (take a look at the link, it’s worth your time). It’s no wonder that the city has 5 streets with Jewish names covering all aspects of the Jewish public contribution to Volos: Moses street where the Synagogue is, Palestine street honoring the Zionist cause, Avraam Benaroya street honoring the Jewish contribution to the creation of the Greek Left, the rabbi Moses Pessah street for his contribution to national causes and recently the Mavrikiou Kofina street who offered so much to the city of Volos.

The Jewish Community of Volos filed a lawsuit and together with the City of Volos will make sure that hate speech does not degenerate into hate violence like the one we have seen in Chania, Corfu, Veria, Salonica and Ioannina the past 3 years.

For the first time in it’s history the Jewish Museum of Greece in Athens became a target when unknown perpetrators painted red swastikas on its walls yesterday night at 23.30 .

Another sad event in the chain of antisemitic events this year in Greece – we remind you of the double arson of the Synagogue of Hania, the vandalisms against the Jewish cemeteries in Ioannina and Thessaloniki and the attack against the Shoah Memorial in Rhodes.

The impressive aspect is that the Museum is well guarded and the perpetrators were recorded by the security cameras, they were either ignorant or extremely audacious.

Ο Σόλιομ,ο Παπούλιας και ο εμπρησμός της Συναγωγής Χανίων/Sólyom,Papoulias and the Hania Synagogue arson

Αυτό το κείμενο το είχα γράψει πέρσι λίγο καιρό μετά την 5η επίθεση μέσα στο 2009 στο εβραϊκό νεκροταφείο Ιωαννίνων στην οποία είχαν βεβηλώθει οι τάφοι αλλά και οι σωροί, μεταξύ των οποίων της μητέρας του προέδρου της κοινότητας. Δεν το δημοσίευσα ποτέ αλλά ο δεύτερος εμπρησμός της Συναγωγής Ετς Χαΐμ /Δένδρο της Ζωής στα Χανιά μου επιτρέπει να το κάνω τώρα, προσθέτοντας απλώς την νέα επίθεση – απόδειξη ότι οι αντισημιτικές επιθέσεις σε 9 ελληνικές πόλεις μέσα στο 2009 δεν έφτασαν για να συνειδητοποιήσει η ελληνική κοινωνία οτι όσο αγνοεί τον αντισημιτισμό, τόσο το πρόβλημα θα χειροτερεύει.

Το μίσος απέναντι στο διαφορετικό αποτελεί ένα θεμελιώδης κομμάτι κάθε ανθρώπου και κάθε ανθρώπινης κοινωνίας. Χρειάζεται θάρρος και θέληση για να το ξεπεράσουμε και στα σίγουρα αυτό απαιτεί κόπο, επιμονή και συμβολικές πράξεις, όσο και συγκεκριμένες ενέργειες. Ειδικότερα το μίσος ενάντια στους εβραίους υπάρχει εδώ και χιλιετίες για να πιστέψω οτι είναι έτσι εύκολο να εξαλειφθεί με ένα ιστολόγιο, ένα email ή οτι εξαρτάται από σύγχρονους παράγοντες. Αν όμως κάτι με ενοχλεί δεν είναι ο αντισημιτισμός αυτός καθαυτός αλλά η απόλυτη, καθολική και διαχρονική απουσία αντιδράσεων σε αυτόν στην χώρα μας. Αυτό μου ήρθε στο μυαλό όταν διάβασα αυτή την είδηση που αφορά τον ούγγρο Πρόεδρο της Δημοκρατίας Λάζλο Σόλιομ:

Ο Πρόεδρος της Ουγγαρίας αποκάλυψε μια αναστηλωμένη επιγραφή για τον εκλιπών αρχιραβίνο του Μακό, η οποία είχε καταστραφεί σε μια αντισημιτική επίθεση.

Το μνημείο είχε καταστραφεί τον προηγούμενο μήνα και επιπλέον είχε βεβηλωθεί με το μήνυμα “Τι έξι εκατομμύρια; Ψεύτες γουρούνια!”. Ο δράστης συνελήφθη σύντομα μετά και καταδικάστηκε για την μεθυσμένη νυχτερινή επίθεση σε 20 ημέρες κοινωνικής εργασίας.

Ο Σόλιομ είπε ότι ήθελε να στείλει ένα μήνυμα για την σημασία της αλληλοσυνδεδεμένης ιστορίας της Εβραϊκής και Ουγγρικής κοινότητας στο Μακό.

Διαβάζοντας αυτή την είδηση δε μπόρεσα παρά να σκεφτώ με πικρία οτι κάτι τέτοιο στην Ελλάδα όχι μόνο δεν έχει γίνει, αλλά είναι αδιανόητο για τους έλληνες πολιτικούς που φοβούνται μέχρι και να φορέσουν την κιππά μέσα σε μια συναγωγή, από απλή ευγένεια, όπως εγώ βγάζω το καπέλο μου αν μπω σε εκκλησία κατά την διάρκεια μιας λειτουργίας. Δεν είναι οτι μας λείπουν οι ευκαιρίες, όπως θυμάστε το εβραϊκό νεκροταφείο των Ιωαννίνων έχει γίνει δεκάδες φορές στόχος επιθέσεων και μόνο το 2009 σημειώθηκαν 5 επιθέσεις με αυτή του Ιουνίου να είναι μια από τις χειρότερες όλων των εποχών αφού δεν έσπασαν μόνο τους τάφους αλλά τους βεβήλωσαν με αίμα ζώων.  Η επίθεση στην μικρή και πολύτιμη Συναγωγή Ετς Χαΐμ/Δένδρο της Ζωής στα Χανιά δεν υπήρξε καν έκπληξη – ήδη πέρυσι τον Ιανουάριο άγνωστοι είχαν προσπαθήσει να βάλουν φωτιά στην Συναγωγή της Βέροιας και να βανδαλίσουν την Συναγωγή της Λάρισας. Δυστυχώς οι αντιδράσεις των τοπικών αρχών είναι παντελώς ανύπαρκτες. Η αντίδραση των τοπικών κοινωνιών; Με την εξαίρεση της Πρωτοβουλίας Πολιτών στα Ιωάννινα, (που λειτουργεί κάτω από εξαιρετικά δυσχερείς συνθήκες και χωρίς πολιτική υποστήριξη), υπήρξε ανύπαρκτη ακόμα και όταν κινδύνευε η ίδια τους η πόλη, όπως στην περίπτωση της οικιστικής δομής της Παλιάς Πόλης των Χανίων. Η κοινωνία των πολιτών και οι πολιτικές οργανώσεις περιορίστηκαν σε γραπτές ανακοινώσεις που μόνος σκοπός τους ήταν να καταχωρηθούν στα πρακτικά των συνεδριάσεων. Στα Ιωάννινα μάλιστα η τοπική οργάνωση της Νεας Δημοκρατίας αρνήθηκε καν την τυπική καταδίκη, γεγονός που δείχνει την την διάβρωση της από ακροδεξιά στοιχεία που θα έπρεπε να ανησυχεί τον νέο αρχηγό της Α.Σαμαρά. Ας μην αναφερθώ στον Υπουργό της “μηδενικής ανοχής” Μ.Χρυσοχοίδη που δεν έλαβε κανένα μέτρο μετά τον πρώτο εμπρησμό. Σε επίπεδο κεντρικής κυβέρνησης, του Γιώργου Παπανδρέου, η κατάσταση ήταν ακόμα χειρότερη αφού οι αδύναμες αντιδράσεις έγιναν μόνο όταν το θέμα έφτασε στα ξένα ΜΜΕ.

Η Ουγγαρία, στην οποία αναφέρθηκα πριν ούτε παράδεισος είναι, ο Πρόεδρος της μόνο άγιος δεν είναι αλλά και ούτε της λείπουν οι αντισημίτες – το αντίθετο μάλιστα. Αυτό όμως στο οποίο διαφέρει είναι οτι όταν μαζεύονται 1000 νεοναζιστές στην Βουδαπέστη, μαζεύονται  ενάντια τους άλλοι 3000 και μεταξύ τους ο ίδιος ο Πρωθυπουργός.

Θα ήταν εύλογο ο Πρόεδρος της Δημοκρατίας Κάρολος Παπούλιας ο οποίος έχει γεννηθεί στα Ιωάννινα να συμμετείχε ο ίδιος σε μια τελετή για την αποκατάσταση των ζημιών, ακριβώς όπως έκανε ο ούγγρος ομόλογος του Λάζλο Σόλιομ. Και δεν εννοώ την τυπική συμμετοχή στις 27 Ιανουαρίου σε αυτό που στην θεωρία είναι Εθνική Ημέρα Μνήμης Ολοκαυτώματος (Νόμος 3218, ΦΕΚ Α/12/27-1-04) αλλά την άμεση απάντηση του σε  πράξεις βίας που θα έπρεπε να τον προσβάλουν ως Γιαννιώτη, ως Έλληνα και ως Πρόεδρο της Ελληνικής Δημοκρατίας. Να πάει ο ίδιος στην συναγωγή Ετς Χαΐμ ή στο νεκροταφείο της γενέθλιας του πόλης, με την μέγιστη δυνατή δημοσιότητα, να αναγνωρίσει οτι υπάρχει ένα πρόβλημα και να διακηρύξει, δημόσια και όχι με κενά τυπικά λόγια, την βίαιη αντίθεση της Ελλάδας στην διαιώνιση του μίσους. Προφανώς έτσι δεν λύνεται ούτε το πρόβλημα της βίας και ούτε το πρόβλημα του αντισημιτισμού. Αλλά αυτός, ως Πρώτος Πολίτης της χώρας, οφείλει να δώσει το παράδειγμα πριν οδηγηθούμε από τα γκραφίτι, τα βεβηλωμένα νεκροταφεία και τις λαμπαδιασμένες συναγωγές  στους ανθρώπους όπως τον Ιούνιο του 1931 στην Θεσσαλονίκη.

Και επειδή αμφιβάλλω το πόσο έχει το παρόν ιστολόγιο στον GReader του, νομίζω οτι το Κεντρικό Ισραηλιτικό Συμβούλιο, (που φαίνεται να ξυπνάει αργά μεν, σταθερά δε), η Ισραηλιτική Κοινότητα Θεσσαλονίκης και οι συνεργάτες του στην Προεδρία της Δημοκρατίας οφείλουν να του το προτείνουν άμεσα.

I had written this post last year, right after the 5th attack in 2009 on the Jewish cemetery of Ioannina that had resulted in the vandalism of the tombs and the remains, among which the mother of the president of the community. I did not publish it then but the second arson of the Synagogue Etz Hayim/Tree of Life in Hania allows me to do so now, simply adding the new attack; a proof that the antisemitic attacks in 9 different greek cities in 2009 were not enough to make greek society realize that as long as it ignores antisemitism, the problem will keep worsening.

Hate against “the different” is intrinsic in every human and in every society. It takes courage and will to overcome it and it definitely needs effort, perseverance and symbolic as well as specific actions. Speaking  especially of the hatred towards the Jews, we know that it exists for centuries to simply believe that it’s that easy to eradicate it through a blog, an email or that it depends on modern factors. But if something bothers me more than anything, it is not antisemitism by itself but the complete and utter lack of reactions towards it in Greece. This was what popped up in my mind when I read the following news regarding the hungarian President László Sólyom:

BUDAPEST (JTA) – Hungary’s president dedicated a restored memorial plaque for the late chief rabbi of Makó, which had been smashed in an anti-Semitic attack.

The memorial was destroyed late last month and its setting defaced with the message: “What six million? Lying swine!” A single culprit was arrested shortly afterwards and convicted of a drunken night-time assault. He was sentenced last week to 20 days of community service.

Sólyom said he wanted to send a message about the importance of the intertwined history of the Jewish and Hungarian communities of Makó.

Reading this piece of news I couldn’t but think in bitterness that something like this in Greece has never have happened but it’s also unthinkable for christian greek politicians who are afraid even to wear a kippah in a synagogue,  out of  respect,  like I take off my hat if I enter a church during a liturgy. It isn’t as if we lack the opportunities; as you recall the Jewish cemetery of Ioannina became target of tenths of antisemitic attacks – 5 just in 2009 with the one of June being the worst of all times since they didn’t only break the tombs but sprayed them with animal blood. The attack on the small and precious Etz Hayim/Tree of Life Synagogue in Hania wasn’t even a surprise – already the past January unknown perpetrators had attempted to set on fire the Synagogue in Veria and vandalize the Synagogue in Larisa. Unfortunately the reactions of local authorities were completely inexistent. The reaction of the local societies ? With the exception of the Citizen’s Initiative in Ioannina, (which operate under extremely difficult circumstances and without political support), it did not simply exist even when the cities themselves were in danger, like the urban tissue of the Old City of Hania. The civil society and the political parties were confined to written statements which served only to be inserted into the proceedings. In fact in Ioannina the local chapter of the Nea Dimokratia party denied to condemn the vandalisms, indicative of Extreme-Right infiltrations in the party which should worry the new leader A.Samaras. I also wish to refrain on commenting heavily on M.Hrisohoidis who relies in his tough zero-tolerance policy which apparently does not include neonazis and did not take any measures after the first arson. On the level of the central government, led by PASOK’s Yiorgo Papandreu, the matters were even worse since the government proceeded to condemn the act only when the foreign media were alerted to the arson.

Hungary, that I took example, is not some kind of paradise, it’s President is no saint and neither is it lacking in antisemites – on the contrary it has more than it’s fair share. But in what Hungary differs from Greece is that when 1000 neonazis gather in Budapest, another 3000 gather against them and among these is the Prime Minister himself.

I deem appropriate that the President of the Greek Democracy Karolos Papulias, who is born in Ioannina, to participate himself in a ceremony restoring the damages, just like his hungarian colleague László Sólyom did. I do not mean his mere participation on January the 27th in what is the National Day for the Memory of the Holocaust but his direct and immediate reply to acts of violence that should insult him as a native of Ioannina, as a Greek and as President of Greece. To visit himself the Etz Hayim synagogue or the cemetery of his native city, to recognize openly that there is a problem and to declare, in public and without empty words, the violent opposition of Greece to the spreading of hate. Of course this shall not solve neither the problem of violence, or of antisemitism. But he, as the First Citizen of Greece, is morally obliged to set the example before we are lead from the graffiti, the vandalized cemeteries and the torched synagogues to people like it happened in June of 1931 in Salonica.

And because I doubt of the inclusion of this blog to his GReader, I think that the Central Board of Jewish Communities, (which seems to wake up slowly but steadily), the Jewish Community of Salonika and his assistants in the Presidency of the Republic to recommend him to do so immediately.

Χανιά: Εμπρησμός της Συναγωγής Ετς Χαΐμ/ Chania,Crete: Arson attack on Etz Hayim Synagogue

Οταν πρωτοξεκίνησα το ιστολόγιο αυτό είχα γράψει οτι με την πάροδο των ετών η Ελλάδα γίνεται “Δύση” και στα πλαίσια αυτά θα χάσει τον μη-βίαιο χαρακτήρα που είχε ο μεταπολεμικός αντισημιτισμός. Και οτι ενώ βίαιοι αντισημίτες φασίστες υπάρχουν παντού σε όλη την Ευρώπη, η Ελλάδα δεν διαθέτει τα αντισώματα στην κοινωνία για να λειτουργήσουν ως αντίπαλο δέος.

Οι συνεχόμενες επιθέσεις στο νεκροταφείο των Ιωαννίνων όπως και το όργιο αντισημιτικής βίας με πρόφαση τις επιχειρήσεις στην Μ.Ανατολή με επιθέσεις σε συναγωγές, νεκροταφείο και μνημεία έδειξαν οτι ο αντισημιτισμός στην Ελλάδα όχι απλώς έχει αυξηθεί αλλά, πλέον, απειλεί την φυσική ακεραιότητα της εβραϊκής παρουσίας στην Ελλάδα. Η κρατική και κοινωνική ασυλία που απολαμβάνουν αντισημίτες νεοναζιστικής κοπής όπως ο Κ.Πλεύρης, του οποίου η αθώωση έγινε μέσα σε ένα κενό αδιαφορίας, επιτείνουν μια κατάσταση εκφοβισμού και ανησυχίας ενάντια στην πανάρχαια εβραϊκή κοινότητα της Ελλάδας, (υπενθυμίζω οτι η παλαιότερη συναγωγή εκτός Ισραήλ βρίσκεται στην Δήλο). Ο αντισημιτισμός του αριστερού χώρου απλώς επιτείνει αυτή την κατάσταση αντί να λειτουργεί ως ανάχωμα ενάντια στον ρατσισμό.

Το βράδυ της 5ης Ιανουαρίου άγνωστοι πήδηξαν το φράχτη της Συναγωγής Ετς Χαίμ στα Χανιά και με την βοήθεια εύφλεκτων υγρών δημιούργησαν μια εστία πυρκαγιάς χρησιμοποιώντας την ξύλινη σκάλα και υφάσματα της Συναγωγής. Σκοπός τους ήταν όχι μόνο να καταστρέψουν την Συναγωγή αλλά και το πολύτιμο αρχείο της με βιβλία, cd με μουσική και τα κοινοτικά αρχεία. Ο αντισημιτικός χαρακτήρας της επίθεσης έγινε εμφανής από την εύρεση σαπουνιού στο εξωτερικό τοίχο – μια, σχεδόν απαρχαιωμένη, απόπειρα εκφοβισμού.

Η σκάλα καταστράφηκε τελείως και σημαντικές ζημιές υπέστη το εσωτερικό της Συναγωγής - ευτυχώς τα ιερά βιβλία  της Τορά γλύτωσαν αλλά το ίδιο δεν μπορούμε να πούμε για τον εσωτερικό διάκοσμο της Συναγωγής.

Η φωτιά, η οποία αν επεκτείνονταν θα κατέστρεφε ολόκληρη την Παλιά Πόλη των Χανίων, έγινε αντιληπτή από έναν αλβανό και ένα μαροκινό ενώ οι γείτονες της Συναγωγής απουσίαζαν, (μου θυμίζει τα Ιωάννινα όπου σπάνε μάρμαρα αλλά κανείς δεν ακούει ποτέ τίποτα), παρά τον συναγερμό της Συναγωγής και τις σειρήνες των πυροσβεστικών οχημάτων.

Υπενθυμίζω οτι στα Χανιά ο αριστερός Νομάρχης του ΣυΡιζΑ Κατσανεβάκης είχε διακριθεί για το αντισημιτικό του παραλήρημα με τις φαντασιώσεις του περί “εισβολής του Εβραϊκού Κεφαλαίου” και σε συνεργασία με το τοπικό Μητροπολίτη Ειρηναίο απειλούσαν με “αυθόρμητες λαϊκές κινητοποιήσεις” αν δεν έκλεινε η Συναγωγή. Στην συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση ύποπτες είναι οργανώσεις που συνδέονται με την Χρυσή Αυγή και που ευθύνονται για τις πρόσφατες βίαιες ρατσιστικές επιθέσεις εναντίων “ανεπιθύμητων στοιχείων” με κατάγματα, σπασμένα δόντια κτλ. Η Αστυνομία δυστυχώς δεν έχει διακριθεί από την προθυμία της να θέσει υπό έλεγχο αυτά τα στοιχεία δίνοντας ευκαιρία να κατηγορηθεί για διασυνδέσεις της με την Χρυσή Αυγή και που δεν αποτελούν μυθεύματα κάποιου “αναρχικού μπαχαλάκια”. Δυστυχώς όμως ούτε μπορεί να αποκλειστεί και η δράση κάποιας αριστερής ομάδας – το παρελθόν του ΣυΡιζΑ με τον ακραία αντισημίτη Νομάρχη Κατσανεβάκη αποτελεί την χείριστη κληρονομιά στο νησί.

Θεωρώ οτι αποτελεί προσωπική πρόκληση στον Υπουργό Προστασίας του Πολίτη Μιχάλη Χρυσοχοίδη, (προσωπικός ιστοχώρος – ιστοχώρος του Υπουργείου), αυτό το πρώτο σοβαρό περιστατικό αντισημιτικής βίας στην χώρας μας και στο χέρι του να δείξει οτι δεν ακολουθεί συνταγές του παρελθόντος. Είμαστε μικρή χώρα και τα Χανιά  μια ακόμα μικρότερη πόλη – θεωρώ αδύνατο η Ελληνική Πολιτεία να μην μπορεί να δώσει έμπρακτες συστάσεις σε αυτές τις ομάδες του ακροδεξιού χώρου και εαν η Αστυνομία Χανίων αδυνατεί να αναλάβει αυτόν τον ρόλο λόγω προσωπικών σχέσεων οφείλει να αλλάξει η φυσική της ηγεσία άμεσα. Είναι στο χέρι του να δείξει οτι θεωρεί πολίτες άξιους προστασίας και τους εβραίους χανιώτες και όχι μόνο τους χριστιανούς. Ταυτόχρονα αποτελεί αυτονόητη υποχρέωση του Δήμου Χανίων και της Νομαρχίας να δείξουν την έμπρακτη συμπαράσταση τους με την αυτοπρόσωπη δημόσια παρουσία τους στον τόπο της επίθεσης και όχι με απλές ανακοινώσεις. Η Συναγωγή Ετς Χαίμ των Χανίων έχει υπάρξει μια πηγή ιστορικού πλούτου αλλά και έχει συμβάλει στην προσέλκυση ξένων τουριστών τόσο άμεσα με τις τελετές που κάνει, όσο και έμμεσα μέσω της ανάδειξης της πόλης – αδυνατώ να πιστέψω οτι οι χανιώτες δεν θα θελήσουν να προστατέψουν τους δικούς τους.

Η ανακοίνωση της Συναγωγής Ετς Χαίμ:

Περίπου στις 12.20-1.00 πμ το βράδυ της 5ης Ιανουαρίου μια σοβαρή επίθεση σημειώθηκε ενάντια στο κτίριο της Συναγωγής των Χανίων. Ένας ή περισσότεροι δράστες εισήλθαν στην Συναγωγή μέσω του νότιου κήπου πηδώντας πάνω από την σιδερένια πόρτα. Στην συνέχεια έφτιαξαν έναν αυτοσχέδιο εμπρηστικό μηχανισμό ανοίγοντας ένα μεγάλο οθωμανικού τύπου μαξιλάρι στο μικβέ (τελετουργική δεξαμενή νερού) και χρησιμοποιώντας τα περιεχόμενα του γέμισαν ένα δοχείο που κατάβρεξαν με ένα εύφλεκτο υγρό και το έθεσαν πυρ κάτω από την ξύλινη σκάλα του εζράτ νασίμ.

(Ο άνω όροφος του γυναικείου τμήματος (εζράτ νασίμ) χρησιμοποιείται ως γραφείο του διευθυντή αλλά και ως βιβλιοθήκη, αναγνωστήριο ενώ περιέχει πολύτιμα βιβλία σε διάφορες γλώσσες για την Οθωμανική, Βυζαντινή και Εβραϊκή τέχνη και αρχιτεκτονική αλλά και βιβλία αναφοράς για την ιστορία της Ευρώπης και της Εγγύς Ανατολής από τους προϊστορικούς χρόνους αλλά και ένα μεγάλο μέρος πάνω στην κρητική ιστορία.

Ένας υπολογιστής και ένα cd player με περισσότερα από 150 CD λειτουργικής αλλά και λαϊκής μουσικής διατηρούνταν στο γραφείο)

Μέσα σε λίγα, μάλλον, λεπτά οι δράστες είχαν διαφύγει και η πυρκαγιά δημιούργησε καπνό που εισήλθε μέσα στο κύριο χώρο της συναγωγής και μετά στον δρόμο μέσα από το άνοιγμα στην μπροστινή όψη της συναγωγής.

Ο Γιάννης Πιέτρα, ένας Αλβανός μετανάστης που ζει κοντά στην Συναγωγή, μύρισε τον καπνό και κοιτάζοντας τον δρόμο τον είδε να εξέρχεται από την εμπρόσθια όψη – τότε κάλεσε την Αστυνομία, την Πυροσβεστική και ξεκίνησε να βρει τον διευθυντή που έφτασε λίγο αργότερα μαζί με τον Μπεσνίκ Σεϊτάς που είναι ο επιστάτης της Συναγωγής. Περίπου την ίδια στιγμή ένας νεαρός μαροκινός, ο Νασρ ΑλΑσούντ, εντόπισε τον καπνό που κατευθύνονταν πλέον προς το λιμάνι και υπήρξε ένας πολύτιμος βοηθός του διευθυντή. Μέχρι τις 1.45 πμ η Πυροσβεστική είχε σβήσει την φωτιά και η Αστυνομία είχε ξεκινήσει το έργο της. Αλλά η υπόλοιπη ζημιά θα γίνονταν ορατή μόνο την επόμενη μέρα. H Ανια Ζουκμαντελ-Παπαδάκη, η βιβλιοθηκονόμος μας και ο σύζυγος της έφτασαν λίγο μετά την κατάσβεση της πυρκαγιάς. Αυτό που ήταν αρκετά εμφανές ήταν η απουσία “ντόπιων” παρά τον απίστευτο θόρυβο του συναγερμού της Συναγωγής αλλά και των σειρήνων από δυο πυροσβεστικά οχήματα που ηχούσαν στην γειτονιά. Ακόμα περισσότερο ανησυχητικό και εμφανής έλλειψη κοινωνική ευθύνης υπήρξε η απουσία ευαισθησίας στο γεγονός ότι αν η συναγωγή είχε καταναλωθεί από τις φλόγες τουλάχιστον η μισή Παλιά Πόλη των Χανίων μιας και οι στενοί δρόμοι θα έκαναν αδύνατη την πρόσβαση των πυροσβεστικών οχημάτων.

Μέχρι τις 7 το πρωί η Αστυνομία είχε λάβει την κατάθεση του Διευθυντή και ξεκίνησε η καταθλιπτική εμπειρία της καταγραφής των ζημιών. Μέλη της Αδελφότητας της Συναγωγής: η Πάολα Νικοτέρα, ο Κωνσταντίνος Φίσερ, ο Σαμ Κοέν και ο Ντέιβιντ Γουέμπερ βρέθηκαν στο σημείο για να εξετάσουν το τι είχε συμβεί στα βιβλία, στην ίδια την κατασκευή αλλά και να βοηθήσουν την Αστυνομία στην εύρεση στοιχείων, μέρος των οποίων ήταν μια πλάκα σαπουνιού που είχε εκτοξευθεί ενάντια στον εξωτερικό τοίχο. (Μέρος της κλασικής αντισημιτικής ρητορείας στην Ελλάδα είναι “Θα σε κάνω σαπούνι !”). Μιας και η ηλεκτρική παροχή είχε διακοπεί κατά την διάρκεια της πυρόσβεσης μάθαμε ότι μπορεί να χρειάζονταν μέχρι και μια βδομάδα για την επανασύνδεση με το δίκτυο. Αυτή η δυσοίωνη πρόβλεψη αντιμετωπίστηκε όταν ο κ.Γιώργος Αρχοντάκης, ένας μηχανικός, προσφέρθηκε να μας βοηθήσει. Καθώς αντιμετωπίζαμε το γεγονός έφτασε η φωτογράφος μας Αγγελική Ψαράκη για να βγάλει φωτογραφίες από τις ζημίες. Μαζί με τον κ. Αρχοντάκη  πέτυχαν να καταθέσουν τα απαραίτητα δικαιολογητικά στη ΔΕΗ και στις 5 το απόγευμα ξαναείχαμε ρεύμα το οποίο μας βοήθησε στην ανύψωση του ηθικού αν και μέχρι τότε η ζημιές ήταν ακόμα περισσότερο εμφανείς.

Τα βιβλία της Τορά ευτυχώς ήταν καλά προστατευμένα μέσα στο Εχάλ αλλά οι τοίχοι του εσωτερικού του ιερού και το ξύλινου ταβανιού είχαν λερωθεί από τον καπνό και γεμίσει από το βαρύ μείγμα αιθάλης και νερού. Μεγάλο μέρος της γυμνής πέτρας στο εσωτερικό έχει βαφεί άσχημα και από νωρίς το απόγευμα ξεκίνησαν οι προετοιμασίες για τον καθαρισμό και κανονίστηκαν οι σκαλωσιές. Αργότερα ο μαραγκός μας κ.Μάνθος Κακαβελάκης πήρε τα μέτρα για την καινούργια σκάλα μιας και η προηγούμενη είχε παντελώς καταναλωθεί από τις φλόγες και συζητήθηκε η δημιουργία ενός σοβαρού πέτρινου τοίχου που να προστατεύει την καινούργια είσοδο της βιβλιοθήκης. Αυτή η κατασκευή θα φτιαχτεί έτσι ώστε να προστατεύει και την είσοδο στο μικβέ. Όλα τα χαλιά της συναγωγής (περίπου 30 και τα περισσότερα αντίκες οθωμανικής κατασκευής) είχαν καλυφθεί από το μείγμα αιθάλης και νερού και ποδοπατηθεί από τους πυροσβέστες και αστυνομικούς. Αυτά έχουν ήδη μαζευτεί για να σταλούν προς αποκατάσταση.

Στις 6 Ιανουαρίου, μια μέρα μετά την πυρκαγιά μαζευτήκαμε μαζί για τις πρωινές προσευχές στις 9 όπως το συνηθίζουμε. Η ατμόσφαιρα ήταν κατανοητά μελαγχολική αλλά ο Διευθυντής μας – ο κ. Σταυρουλάκης – προσπάθησε να εκτρέψει μέρος της κατανοητής οργής ανακεφαλαιώνοντας το τι είχε συμβεί στις τελευταίες 24 ώρες. Πρέπει να είμαστε οργισμένοι για το τι συνέβη στην Συναγωγή μας. Αν δεν ήμασταν τότε θα ήταν δείγμα ότι ήμαστε αναίσθητοι ή ηθικά μουδιασμένοι. Αλλά ενάντια σε τι ο θυμός μας κατευθύνεται; Το οικιστικό περιβάλλον μέσα στο οποίο η Ετς Χαΐμ βρίσκεται πρέπει να μελετηθεί προσεκτικά και η όποια αδιαφορία από την μεριά των πολιτών προς το υλικό περιβάλλον της πόλης και η συλλογικής ψυχή της είναι απαραίτητη για να υποβοηθηθεί, μέχρι ενός βαθμού, η βεβήλωση μνημείων, σπιτιών και χώρων κοινωνικής συνεύρεσης. Αυτό για το οποίο πρέπει να οργιστούμε είναι η άγνοια που προκαλεί ρατσισμό, διακρίσεις ή λάθος θεωρήσεις της ζωής. Έχουμε προσπαθήσει να κάνουμε την Ετς Χαΐμ μια μικρή παρουσία στο μέσο αυτού που μερικές φορές φτάνει να είναι μια επιθετική αδιαφορία. Αυτό το κάνουμε σε τέτοιο βαθμό που οι πόρτες μας να είναι ανοικτές από νωρίς το πρωί μέχρι αργά το βράδυ ώστε η Συναγωγή να εκπληρώνει τον ρόλο ως χώρος προσευχής, συγκέντρωσης και συμφιλίωσης. Με πολλούς τρόπους έχουμε πετύχει αυτόν τον σκοπό – ίσως η σιωπηλή μας παρουσία δεν γίνεται ανεκτή από ορισμένους και ίσως είναι πηγή ενόχλησης σε άλλους. Έχω συχνά τονίσει ότι είμαστε η μοναδική σημαντική συναγωγή στην Ελλάδα, ίσως σε ολόκληρη την Ευρώπη, που δεν διαθέτει κάποια έντονη προστασία. Οι τσάντες δεν ελέγχονται, οι ταυτότητες και τα διαβατήρια δεν επιδεικνύονται και κανείς δεν είναι υποχρεωμένος να δηλώσει το ποιος είναι. Αυτός ο χαρακτήρας της Συναγωγής οφείλει να μην αλλάξει και οι πόρτες να παραμείνουν ανοικτές ή αλλιώς θα παραδοθούμε στην άγνοια που ευθύνεται για αυτή την βεβήλωση. Η γνώση μας για το τι είναι ικανή η άγνοια να πετύχει σίγουρα θα παίξει ρόλο στο πώς ορισμένες επισκευές θα λάβουν χώρα αλλά την ίδια στιγμή πρέπει να είμαστε προσεκτικοί και να μην αφήσουμε την άγνοια να επηρεάσει ή να καθορίσει την φύση της παρουσίας μας.

Θα έχουμε ένα βαρύ βάρος να χρηματοδοτήσουμε τις απαραίτητες επισκευές και ελπίζουμε οτι είτε σαν παλιοί φίλοι, είτε σαν καινούργιοι θα μας βοηθήσετε. Κάθε δωρεά θα εκτιμηθεί και θα είναι ευπρόσδεκτη.

When I first began writing this blog I had written that with the passing of the years Greece was becoming  more “westernized” and as a result of this process its traditionally non-violent post-WW2 antisemitism would acquire violent characteristics. And while violent antisemitic fascists exist everywhere, Greece does not possess the antibodies in the society to act as a counterbalance.

The continuous attacks in the Ioannina Jewish cemetery and the orgy of antisemitic violence under the pretext of the Middle East crisis with attacks on synagogues, cemeteries and monuments proved that antisemitism in Greece has not only increased but it threatens the physical integrity of the millennial Jewish community of Greece, (I remind that the oldest synagogue outside Israel is in the greek island of Delos). The impunity granted by the Greek State and greek christian society to antisemites of neonazi nature like K.Plevris, whose acquittal took place amidst a deafening indifference, help to increase a state of intimidation and anxiety against the Jewish presence in Greece. The antisemitism of the Left only worsens the situation instead of acting a barrier against the spread of racism.

During the night of the 5th of January unknown perpetrators climbed the fence of the Etz Hayim Synagogue in Chania (in Crete) and with the aid of inflammable material created a fire using the wooden stairs and fabric from the synagogue. Their aim was not only to burn the synagogue but also it’s precious archives with books, cd’s with music and communal records. The antisemitic nature of the attack became even more apparent by the antiquated intimidating use of a soap thrown against the outer wall – a reference to the Shoah.

The staircase was completely destroyed and the interior of the synagogue suffered significant damage – fortunately the sacred Torah scrolls were saved but we cannot say the same for the interior decoration of the synagogue.

The fire, that should have it spread would have destroyed the entire Old City of Chania, was noticed by two immigrants from Albania and Morocco while the neighbors of the Synagogue were absent, (it reminds me of the Ioannina cemetery vandals which may break marble tombstones but nobody hears anything), despite the alarm system of the Synagogue and the sirens of the Fire Department.

I remind that in Chania the leftist Syriza Prefect Katsanevakis had distinguished himself for his antisemitic hysteria with his fantasies over “the invasion of the Jewish capital” and together with the local Metropolite of the Greek Church Irineos had threatened with “spontaneous popular initiatives” should the Synagogue not have closed. In this particular case the suspicions fall upon far-Right organizations linked to the neonazi Chrissi Avghi and are responsible for the recent violent racist attacks against “undesirables” with broken bones and teeth. The Greek Police Department has not distinguished itself for its zeal to control these elements giving grounds for allegations for illicit contacts with Chrissi Avghi. Unfortunately neither the role of a leftist group can be excluded; the case of Syriza and it’s extremist antisemitic Prefect are the worst kind of inheritance for the city.

I consider that this attack constitutes a personal challenge to the Minister of Citizen Protection Michalis Chrisochoidis, (personal website – Ministry website); this is his first major incident of antisemitic violence in Greece and at his discretion to prove that he does not follow practices of the past. We are a small country and Chania even a smaller city – I consider it impossible that the Greek State cannot give factual warnings to the far-Right groups and if the Police Department of Chania cannot take this role due to personal relationships, it’s leadership should change immediately.  It lies withing his hand to prove that the jewish citizens of Chania are also worth protecting, not only the christian ones. Contemporaneously it is taken for granted that the Municipality of Chania and the Prefecture should show their support by their personal and public appearance in the place of the attack and not with simple announcements. The Etz Hayim Synagogue has been a source of historic wealth but has also helped into attracting foreign tourists both directly through it’s ceremonies and indirectly by enriching the appeal of the city – I cannot believe that the people of Chania shall not wish to protect their own people.

This is the statement by the Etz Hayim Synagogue:

At approximately 12:20-1:00 AM on the night of the 5^th January, a serious attack was made on the fabric of the Synagogue. One or two or even more individuals made their way into the south garden of the synagogue by climbing over the iron gate. Subsequent to this they set about making an improvised incendiary device by tearing open a large Ottoman cushion in the mikveh and then with the contents stuffed a canister that was filled with some flammable liquid which was then set afire under the wooden stair of the ezrat nashim.  (The upper floor of the women’s section (ezrat nashim) serves as the office of the director as well as a library and reading room and contains valuable books in various languages on Ottoman, Byzantine and Jewish art and architecture as well as resource books on European and Near Eastern History from pre-historic times as well as a large section on Cretan history.

A computer and CD player with over 150 CDs of Sephardic liturgical and secular music were also kept in the office.)

Within probably minutes the assailants had taken off and the fire produced smoke that poured into the synagogue proper and then out into the street through the oculus in the facade of the synagogue.

Yannis Pietra, an Albanian emigrant living not far from the Synagogue, smelled the smoke and looking into the street saw it belching out of the facade and called the police, fire-station and then set off to find the director who arrived not long after along with Besnik Seitas the handyman of the Synagogue. At roughly the same time a young Moroccan, Nasr Alassoud, also traced the smoke that was coming down the street to the harbor. He proved to be a much needed hand by the director. By 1:45 AM the fire brigade had extinguished the fire and the police had begun their work. But the residual damage was only going to be apparent the next day. Anja Zuckmantel-Papadakis, our librarian and her husband arrived not long after the fire was extinguished. What was quite notable was the lack of ‘locals’ despite the quite incredible noise of the synagogue alarm system and sirens from the two fire engines screeching through the neighborhood. What was even more disturbing and an obvious sign of a lack of civic responsibility was the apparent lack of sensitivity to the fact that had the synagogue been engulfed in flames at least half of the old city of Hania would have gone up in flames as the narrow streets and inaccessible quarters would have prevented access by the fire brigades.

By 7:00 AM a deposition was made by the director with the police and the somewhat depressing experience of assessing the damage done was carried out. Members of the Synagogue fraternity: Paola Nikotera, Konstantine Fischer, Sam Cohen and David Webber were on hand to examine what had taken place – to books, structure as well as to assist the police in establishing evidence part of which was a bar of soap that had been thrown against the outer wall. (A common anti-semitic quip in Greek runs…’I'll make you into a bar of soap!’) As the mains of the Synagogue had been disconnected in the course of extinguishing the fire, we were informed that it would perhaps take up to a week to have them reconnected. The prospect was met when Mr Giorgos Archontakis, an engineer, offered to help us with this. As we were dealing with this, Angeliki Psaraki our photographer arrived to take pictures of the damage and later with Mr Archontakis. These two were successful in submitting the necessary papers to the Electric Company and by 5:00 PM we had electricity again which considerably raised morale though the damage by now was even more apparent.

The Siphrei Torah were fortunately well protected in their Ehal but the walls of the interior of the sanctuary as the wooden ceiling have been streaked and covered by water laden soot as well. Much of the naked stone on the interior has been badly stained and by early evening we set in motion plans for the cleaning of the walls and even ordered the scaffolding. By late evening our carpenter, Mr Manthos Kakavelakis had taken measurement for the new stair as the old one was completely gutted in the fire and we had discussed the creation of a solid stone wall to protect the new library entrance. This structure will be articulated so as to include the entrance to the mikveh. All of the carpets of the synagogue (some 30 odd and most of them antique Turkish) had been covered with soot and messed about by the fire-fighters and police. These have been packed up in readiness for cleaning.

On the 6^th January, a day after the fire we assembled together to recite Shaharith prayers at 9:00 as is our custom. The atmosphere was understandably sombre but the director – Mr Stavroulakis – tried to divert some of the understandable anger by looking over what had happened over the past 24 hours or so. We must be angry over what has happened to our synagogue. If we were not it would be an indication that we were either indifferent or morally numb. But exactly against what is our anger directed? The urban context in which Etz Hayyim figures at this moment must be considered carefully and any indifference on the part of the citizens to the material fabric of this city and its collective ‘psyche’ is tantamount to abetting to a degree the desecration of monuments, of homes and sites of common meeting. What we must be angry about is the ignorance that determines racism, discrimination or badly examined lives. We have tried at Etz Hayyim to be a small presence in the midst of what is at times almost aggressive ignorance. We have done this to such a degree that our doors are open from early in the morning until late in the day so that the Synagogue assumes its role as a place of prayer, recollection and reconciliation. In many ways we have been successful through this quiet presence – perhaps our ‘silent presence’ wears not too well on some and is even a source of annoyance to others. Often I have pointed out that we are perhaps the only synagogue of significance in Greece, possibly Europe, where there is little if any overt sign of protective security. Hand-bags are not checked, ID cards and passports are not examined, and one is not obliged to sign in. This character of the Synagogue must not change and the doors must remain open – or we have given in to the ignorance that has perpetrated this desecration. Our awareness of what ignorance can do to us will certainly determine how certain repairs are to be made – but at the same time we must be cautious about allowing ignorance to affect or determine the nature of our presence.

Τα συγχαρητήρια μου στην Εκκλησία της Ελλάδος που αφήνει τέτοιες δηλώσεις να περνάνε ασχολίαστες – μετά καθόμαστε και ασχολούμαστε με την Καθολική Εκκλησία και τους αντισημίτες επισκόπους της – είναι εμφανές οτι τίποτα δεν έχει αλλάξει και η Εκκλησία της Ελλάδος παραμένει ένας αρνητικός πρωταγωνιστής σε μια περίοδο πολλαπλών αντισημιτικών επεισοδίων όπως είδαμε τον Ιανουάριο φέτος. Υπενθυμίζω οτι ο Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ δεν κατηγόρησε οτι συνωμοτούν κατά της Ελλάδος μόνο γενικά τους εβραίους αλλά και συγκεκριμένα και την ελληνική εβραϊκή κοινότητα, έλληνες πολίτες αυτής της χώρας – λυπάμαι που η Εκκλησία της Ελλάδος δέχεται οτι ο αντισημιτισμός συνάδει τόσο με το πνευματικό μήνυμα της, όσο και τον θεσμικό της ρόλο.

Προφανώς περιορίσθηκα στα πλέον πρόσφατα γεγονότα. Από εκεί και πέρα θα μπορούσαμε να πούμε πολλά όπως πχ για το μνημόσυνο που τέλεσε σε εκδήλωση του think-tank του ΛΑΟΣ και ανέδειξε ο Στόχος αλλά θα ξεφύγουμε. Απλώς να θυμίσω οτι μιας και μόνο οι Ορθόδοξοι ιερείς μισθοδοτούνται από το Κράτος και οι δικοί μου φόροι πληρώνουν το δικό του μηνιάτικο.

Ο Σεβασμιώτατος Μητροπολίτης Ιερισσού, Αγίου Όρους και Αρδαμερίου κ. Νικόδημος, επισήμανε: «Το κείμενο αυτό είναι γνωστό εις τους Θεολόγους ως κείμενο ψευδεπίγραφο. Νομίζω ότι πρόκειται περί συνομωσίας των Σιωνιστών, για να σκανδαλίσουν.

for letting these antisemitic outbursts go without the slightest comment – it is fair to say that she remains a negative protagonist in a scene of rising antisemitism as we saw in the antisemitic orgy of December and January this year; it makes the Catholic Church with her share of antisemitic bishops sound quite normal. I remind everyone that he accused of complotting against Greece not only Jews everywhere but specifically also the Greek Jewish Community, greek citizens – I am extremely sorry to see that the Greek Church finds that antisemitism coherent with her spiritual message and it’s institutional role.

Ιανουάριος ’09: Αντισημιτική βία στην Ελλάδα/January ’09: Antisemitic violence in Greece

Διμοιρίες των ΜΑΤ έξω από συναγωγές, συσκέψεις σε εβραϊκά σχολεία – ενώ συναγωγές, νεκροταφεία και μνημεία γινόντουσαν στόχος βανδαλισμών και εμπρησμών. Αυτή ήταν η εικόνα που παρουσίαζε ο Ελληνικός Εβραϊσμός τους μήνες Δεκέμβριο και Ιανουάριο όταν το σύνολο της ελληνικής κοινωνίας αποφάσισε ότι ο καλύτερος τρόπος να στηρίξει τους «αγωνιστές της Χαμάς» (η γνωστή αντισημιτική εφημερίδα Αυριανή, 29/12/08) ήταν να ξεσπάσουν ενάντια στους έλληνες συμπολίτες που γεννήθηκαν με την λάθος θρησκεία. Αν και το είχα γράψει από μήνες είχα αποφασίσει να μην το δημοσιεύσω αλλά η πεποίθηση οτι στην Ελλάδα ο αντισημιτισμός περιορίζεται στο ΛάΟΣ του Γ.Καρατζαφέρη ή είναι μόνο λόγια οφείλει να αντιμετωπίσει τα γεγονότα.

Βίαια αντισημιτικά γεγονότα συνέβησαν 9 ελληνικές πόλεις: σε Αθήνα, Θεσσαλονίκη, Λάρισα, Βόλο, Ιωάννινα, Κέρκυρα αλλά και σε judenrein πόλεις όπως Κομοτηνή, Βέροια και Δράμα. Σε πανελλήνιο επίπεδο είδαμε εξοργιστικές δηλώσεις για «εβραίους που μυρίζουν αίμα» από τον ηγέτη της Ακρας Δεξιάς Γιώργο Καρατζαφέρη και που σιωπηλά επικροτήθηκαν από τον Πρόεδρο της Βουλης Δ.Σιούφα. Η Αριστερά καταδίκασε με την μέγιστη αυστηρότητα το Ισραήλ και ταυτόχρονα αρνήθηκε να καταδικάσει τα βίαια αντισημιτικά επεισόδια στην ίδια της την χώρα, ενώ τραγελαφική ήταν η χρησιμοθηρική αναφορά στο “Ολοκαύτωμα” στη Γάζα από ανθρώπους που ευτελίζουν ενσυνείδητα την Σοά και αρνούνται να συμμετάσχουν σε όποια τελετή μνήμης.

Στελέχη της Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος όπως ο Μητρ.Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ μίλησαν για “σιωνιστικά τέρατα με γαμψά νύχια” που στηρίζονται από τις «μασονικές στοές» και κατηγόρησε ευθέως τους έλληνες εβραίους, (ο νεοναζιστικός Στόχος επικροτεί). Άλλοι όπως ο Μητροπ.Θεσσαλονικής Ανθιμος, (γνωστός για άλλες αμφισβητήσιμες δηλώσεις), είπε οτι οι εβραίοι τιμωρούνται γιατί “σταύρωσαν το Χριστό” και είναι θεοκτόνοι – άλλωστε την κάρτα των θεοκτόνων την έπαιξαν και πρωτοσέλιδα εφημερίδων όπως η Βραδυνή μιλώντας για «Σταύρωση» και «Πόντιους Πιλάτους».  Δεν αναφέρομαι καν στα πρωτοσέλιδα παρανοϊκών αντισημιτικών ορθόδοξων εφημερίδων όπως ο Ορθόδοξος Τύπος που μιλούσαν “ΣΙΩΝΙΣΤΑΙ ΚΑΙ ΜΑΣΩΝΟΙ ΣΤΗΡΙΖΟΥΝ ΤΗΝ ΣΦΑΓΗ”, αλλά θα περιορισθώ στην αντισημιτική εφημερίδα Αυριανή που στο πρωτοσέλιδο δεξιά κατηγόρησε τους αμερικανοεβραίους οτι έκλεψαν τον πλούτο, δημιούργησαν την παγκόσμια οικονομική κρίση μας πληροφορούσε για τις προσπάθειες των αμερικανοεβραίων να ξεκινήσουν τον Γ’ΠΠ (!!!), ενώ και αυτή μίλησε για «Ολοκαύτωμα». Μη ξεχάσουμε την Απογευματινή με πρωτοσέλιδο “Ολοκαύτωμα” και που είχε υποστηρίξει στο παρελθόν οτι οι ισραηλινοί κλέβουν τα όργανα των Παλαιστινίων και όλες τις υπόλοιπες εφημερίδες που αρνήθηκαν συστηματικά να αναφερθούν στο ρατσιστικό μίσος που κυρίευσε την χώρα.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί το μένος που επιδείχθηκε από τηλεοράσεις και ραδιόφωνα – ξεχωρίζει η ραδιοφωνική εκπομπή του Τζίμη Πανούση που ξεκαθάριζε οτι δεν υπάρχει καλός εβραίος αλλά είναι όλοι γουρούνια και δολοφόνοι αλλά ευτυχώς οι μέρες τους είναι μετρημένες. Αλλά ας περιοριστούμε στις απτές εκφράσεις του εφιάλτη του ρατσισμού που εκφράστηκε από την Ακρα Αριστερά, την Ακρα Δεξιά και τις νεοναζιστικές ομάδες της χώρας μας.

Αθήνα

Αντισημιτικά γκράφιτι εμφανίστηκαν σε πολλούς δρόμους της πόλης – εδώ βλέπουμε σύνθημα στο εβραϊκό νεκροταφείο που μιλάει για “ΙΣΡΑΗΛΙΤΕΣ ΕΒΡΑΙΟΙ ΦΟΝΙΑΔΕΣ”. Αν υπήρχε κάποια αμφιβολία για την θρησκευτική δίασταση της αντίθεσης, οι δράστες φρόντισαν να το ξεκαθαρίσουν με το να προσθέσουν το εβραίος μετά το ισραηλίτης, αφού μάλλον το μπέρδεψαν με το ισραηλινός.

Μεταξύ των πολλών αντιπολεμικών διαδηλώσεων ξεχωρίζουν αυτές της Χρυσής Αυγής όπου η “Λευτεριά στην Παλαιστίνη” συνδυάζονταν αρμονικά με το “Τσεκούρι και φωτιά στα εβραϊκά σκυλιά” και το “Εβραίοι,Γουρούνια,Φονιάδες των Λαών”, (έχω και το βιντεο με την παρέλαση τους στο κέντρο της Αθήνας – σε άλλες περιπτώσεις αριστερές και αναρχικές ομάδες αντιστέκονται αλλά από ότι φαίνεται δεν πρέπει να διαφωνούσαν σε αυτή την περίπτωση). Στελέχη της οργάνωσης έδωσαν συνεντεύξεις σε πανελλήνιους τηλεοπτικούς σταθμούς όπως το Μέγκα – και γιατί όχι; Αλλωστε τα διάφορα ακροδεξιά κόμματα μάζεψαν περίπου 11% στην Αθήνα στις ευρωεκλογές που ακολούθησαν.

Βέροια

Άγνωστοι προσπάθησαν να πυρπολήσουν την Συναγωγή που βρίσκεται μέσα στην εβραϊκή συνοικία της Μπαρμπούτας μέσα στην πόλη της Βέροιας – ευτυχώς η φωτιά δεν επεκτάθηκε και μόνο η είσοδος και η βεράντα υπέστησαν ζημίες. Κατά διαβολική σύμπτωση πριν ένα χρόνο έγραφα για τις κατηγορίες οτι οι εβραίοι ενέχονται σε ανθρωποθυσίες που διατυπώθηκαν τον τηλεστάρ και επιτυχημένο συγγραφέα Ιωάννη Φουράκη, λόγω των ερευνών για την εύρεση του Αλεξ Μεσχισβίλι κοντά στην Μπαρμπούτα.

Βόλος

Η εβραϊκή κοινότητα της πόλης στοχοποιήθηκε από αριστερούς “ακτιβιστές” οι οποίοι έγραψαν συνθήματα στο τοίχο της συναγωγής της πόλης στις 31/12 απαιτώντας από έλληνες να απολογηθούν για το τι συμβαίνει σε ένα τρίτο κράτος και πιστοποιητικό κοινωνικών φρονημάτων στο χώρο όπου προσέρχονται για να προσευχηθούν – οι λειτουργίες αναβλήθηκαν και η συναγωγή έκλεισε μέχρι να περάσει η μπόρα.

Η αριστερή οργάνωση Αντιεξουσιαστική Κίνηση, που εμφανίστηκε ως υπεύθυνη για το γεγονός, με ανακοίνωση της αποποιήθηκε κάθε ανάμειξη αλλά ταυτόχρονα φρόντισε να  εμφανίσει την εβραίους σχεδόν σαν απόδημους ισραηλινούς με το να ταυτίσει την κατάσταση τους με την “τουρκική” μειονότητα της Δυτικής Θράκης.

Δράμα

Το Μνημείο του Ολοκαυτώματος καλύφθηκε με συνθήματα υπέρ της Παλαιστίνης. Δεν είναι προφανώς η πρώτη φορά – ξεχωρίζει η φορά που αριστερός “ακτιβιστής” είχε φροντίσει να ανακοινώσει την βεβήλωση που πραγματοποιήθηκε λίγο μετά. Πέρα από το ανορθόγραφο σύνθημα, οι επίδοξοι ειρηνόφιλοι διέγραψαν και τα ονόματα των εβραϊκών κοινοτήτων της Δράμας, της Καβάλας, της Νέας Ορεστιάδας, του Διδυμότειχου, της Ξάνθης, της Κομοτηνής, των Σερρών και της Καβάλας που δολοφονήθηκαν από τους ναζί Γερμανούς και τους Βούλγαρους σύμμαχους τους – το τι μήνυμα ήθελαν να περάσουν το αφήνω σε εσάς.

Θεσσαλονίκη

Ημερίδα του Εβραϊκού Μουσείου αναβλήθηκε μετά από “προειδοποιήσεις φοιτητών”, ενώ η Ομάδα για την Μελέτη του Ελληνικού Εβραϊσμού στο Πανεπιστήμιο Μακεδονίας έγινε δέκτης “προειδοποιήσεων”. Δεν θα αναφερθώ καν στα δεκάδες γκραφίτι που γέμισαν του τοίχους της πόλης ταυτίζοντας ισραηλινούς ή/και έλληνες εβραίους με τους ναζί.

Διμοιρίες των ΜΑΤ βρέθηκαν να φρουρούν τα γραφεία της Εβραϊκής Κοινότητας και την συναγωγή πολλές φορές κατά την διάρκεια διαδηλώσεων. Το ΚΚΕ για μια ακόμη φορά αποφάσισε να καταλήγουν οι πορείες διαμαρτυρίας στο Μνημείο του Ολοκαυτώματος, (υπενθυμίζω οτι το επίσημο ΚΚΕ το είχε βανδαλίσει το 2006 κατά την διάρκεια της πρώτης διαδήλωσης από το Ολοκαύτωμα και μετά ενάντια στην εβραϊκή κοινότητα της πόλης που είχε καταλήξει στον βίαιο αποκλεισμό των γραφείων της Κοινότητας). Ξεχωρίζει η άρνηση του Συριζα να συμμετάσχει στην Εθνική Ημέρα Μνήμης Ολοκαυτώματος στις 27/1 – όχι ότι έτσι και αλλιώς συστηματικά αρνείται να παρουσιαστεί αλλά αξίζει να σημειωθεί η απύθμενη υποκρισία των τοπικών αξιωματούχων του που δεν έχουν πρόβλημα να διαφημίζουν τις “ανθρωπιστικές” εκδηλώσεις τους πάνω από τα οστά των 350.000/500.000 νεκρών εβραίων που ακόμα βρίσκονται κάτω από το Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο. Άλλωστε γνωρίζω για μια περίπτωση “αντιρατσιστή” τοπικού στελέχους, του οποίου το σπίτι στην Ανω Πόλη “στολίζεται” από λεηλατημένες ταφόπλακες του εβραϊκού νεκροταφείου.

Για τα αντισημιτικά κηρύγματα του τοπικού Μητροπολίτη, που διακρίνεται για την εβραιοφαγία του, αναφέρθηκα πριν. Η ειρωνία οτι τα κηρύγματα έγιναν στο Ναό του Αγίου Δημητρίου  που έχει φτιαχτεί από κλεμμένες εβραικές ταφόπλακες προφανώς δεν ήταν εμφανής στο σεβάσμιο ιερέα.

Ιωάννινα

Για πολλοστή φορά τα τελευταία χρόνια άγνωστοι έσπασαν τάφους στο εβραϊκό νεκροταφείο της πόλης στις 19/1. Το φαινόμενο είναι, πλέον, τόσο αναμενόμενο που ο πρόεδρος της Ισραηλιτικής Κοινότητας Ιωαννίνων είχε ήδη ειδοποιήσει την Αστυνομία, χωρίς όμως αυτή να λάβει μέτρα. Το εβραϊκό νεκροταφείο Ιωαννίνων έχει γίνει μόνιμος στόχος τα τελευταία χρόνια μέσα στην γενική αδιαφορία της τοπικής κοινωνίας και την πιθανή εμπλοκή των τοπικών αστυνομικών αρχών. Έκτοτε από τον Ιανουάριο μέχρι σήμερα έχουν γίνει πέντε επιθέσεις και φτάσαμε στο επίπεδο να βεβηλώνονται τα ίδια τα λείψανα με σκοτωμένα ζώα για να υπάρξει κάποια μικρή αντίδραση , ενώ οι τοπικές οργανώσεις της Νέας Δημοκρατίας διακρίθηκαν από την άρνηση τους να καταδικάσουν το γεγονός.

Αξίζει να τονίσουμε αυτή η σειρά επιθέσεων μαζί με αυτή του Ιουλίου ήταν μια από τις χειρότερες αντισημιτικές επιθέσεις των τελευταίων ετών, (στην φωτογραφία οι σπασμένοι τάφοι του Ιανουαρίου).

Κέρκυρα

Βανδαλισμοί σημειώθηκαν στην συναγωγή της πόλης. Προφανέστατα καμμία αντίδραση σε μια πόλη με μια μακριά παράδοση αντισημιτισμού, (το πογκρόμ του 1891 – το χειρότερο στην ελληνική ιστορία, η συνεργασία με τους γερμανούς στην εξαφάνιση της τοπικής εβραικής κοινότητας…).

Λάρισα

Η Λάρισα υπήρξε η πόλη στην οποία η αντισημιτική παράνοια της Αριστεράς και της Δεξιάς εκδηλώθηκε με ιδιαίτερη μανία. Κατά την διάρκεια πορείας για τις συνθήκες στις φυλακές στις 17/1 αναρχικοί και παλαιστίνιοι διαδηλωτές επιχείρησαν να βανδαλίσουν την συναγωγή της πόλης. Αυτόνομοι από συγκεκριμένη ομάδα που συμμετείχαν στην πορεία τους απέτρεψαν, παρά τις αντιδράσεις λοιπών μερών της διαδήλωσης. Η Συναγωγή χρειάστηκε και άλλες μέρες την προστασία από διμοιρίες των ΜΑΤ, ενώ συνθήματα των διαδηλωτών επαναλάμβαναν τις γνωστές κατηγορίες οτι οι εβραίοι ελέγχουν την Ελλάδα και οτι η Αστυνομία προστατεύει “τους αφέντες” της.

Την ίδια μέρα ακροδεξιές οργανώσεις συνδεδεμένες με την Χρυσή Αυγή διοργάνωσαν συγκέντρωση έξω από τον χώρο όπου είναι συγκεντρωμένη η Συναγωγή και το Εβραϊκό Σχολείο με τίτλο “Εβραίοι Δολοφόνοι. Έξω από την Λάρισα!“, (στην φωτογραφία δεξιά screenshot από νεοναζιστικό ιστότοπο που ανακοίνωνε την νεοναζιστική σύναξη – η ανάρτηση σήμερα έχει διαγραφεί). Η συγκέντρωση κατέληξε στον βανδαλισμό του μνημείου για την εξόντωση των Λαρισαίων Εβραίων. Ταυτόχρονα κυκλοφόρησαν μηνύματα για μποϋκοτάζ των εβραϊκών καταστημάτων και μηνύματα για  μαζική συμμετοχή της Χρυσής Αυγής σε διαδηλώσεις της “ΠΑΝΕΥΡΩΠΑΪΚΗ ΕΠΙΤΡΟΠΗ ΓΙΑ ΤΟΝ ΤΕΡΜΑΤΙΣΜΟ ΤΟΥ ΑΠΟΚΛΕΙΣΜΟΥ ΤΗΣ ΓΑΖΑΣ· ΣΥΝΔΕΣΜΟΣ ΕΛΛΗΝΟΠΑΛΑΙΣΤΙΑΝΙΚΗΣ ΦΙΛΙΑΣ”. Ας μην ξεχνάμε οτι η Συναγωγή αποτελεί μόνιμο πέρασμα των νεοναζιστικών διαδηλώσεων της Χρυσής Αυγής μέχρι και σήμερα όπως μαθαίνουμε από την ίδια την Χρυσή Αυγή.

Δεν χρειάζεται να προσθέσω οτι η εβραϊκή κοινότητα της πόλης μετά από αυτή την συνδυασμένη επίθεση από Αριστερούς και Δεξιούς αντισημίτες αναγκάστηκε να διακόψει κάθε κοινοτική δραστηριότητα μέχρι να ηρεμήσουν τα πράγματα, ενώ αυξήθηκαν τα μέτρα προστασίας στο εβραϊκό σχολείο που βρίσκεται στην ιδια περιοχή.

Επιμύθιο

Είναι αδαής ή ανενημέρωτος ή κακόβουλος αυτός που πιστεύει οτι στην Ελλάδα δεν υπάρχει αντισημιτισμός και οτι οι έλληνες έχουμε κάνει το εμβόλιο κατά του ρατσισμού. Αυτό αφορά είτε πιθανούς ψηφοφόρους του ΛΑΟΣ, είτε υποψηφίους των Ο-Π που πιστεύουν οτι η ζωή των εβραίων στην Ελλάδα “δεν επηρεάζεται βαθύτερα” και τα κίνητρα της αντισημιτικής βίας βασίζονται στην “πολιτική του Ισραήλ”.

Πολύ χειρότερα γεγονότα συνέβησαν αλλού στην Ευρώπη όπως στην Ολλανδία, Γαλλία, Μεγάλη Βρετανία – η Ελλάδα δεν υπήρξε μοναδική περίπτωση. Πουθενά όμως δεν υπήρξε μια τέτοια εκκωφαντική απουσία αντιδράσεων από την κοινωνία και από τον πολιτικό κόσμο. Ευχαριστώ το Παρατηρητήριο των Συμφωνιών του Ελσινκι, τους terminal119 που υπήρξαν οι μόνοι που καταδίκασαν αυτές τις ενέργειες. Ολους τους υπόλοιπους τους ευχαριστώ για το διεθνιστικό τους ενδιαφέρον – τα εκατομμύρια των διαδηλώσεων για τις σφαγές των Κούρδων στο Ιράκ του Σαντάμ, τις σφαγές εκατοντάδων χιλιάδων μαύρων χριστιανών από άραβες μουσουλμάνους στο Νταρφούρ, την γενοκτονία στην Ρουάντα ή τις μαζικές σφαγές αλβανών από τους σέρβους αδερφούς στην γειτονιά μας σε Κόσοβο και Βοσνία ή ακόμα πιο πρόσφατα με τους Ταμίλ αποτελούν αποκαλυπτικές των κινήτρων τους πίσω από το όψιμο ενδιαφέρον τους.

Είναι γελοίοι και βαθύτατα υποκριτές αυτοί που ξέρουν να μιλάνε για καημένους επαγγελματίες αντιρατσιστές που δεν μπορούν να επικρίνουν το Ισραήλ χωρίς να κατηγορηθούν για αντισημιτισμό, ενώ στην πραγματικότητα κρατούν το στόμα τους ερμητικά κλειστό για τα όργια που συμβαίνουν στην ίδια τους την χώρα κάθε φορά που φουντώνει η κατάσταση στην Μέση Ανατολή. Οτι κάθε μέρα υπάρχουν δεκάδες άρθρα και τηλεοπτικές εκπομπές για τα δικαιώματα των παλαιστινίων, ενώ το γεγονός οτι στα Ιωάννινα κανείς δεν αισθάνεται ασφαλής για την τύχη των λείψανων της οικογένειας του – κατά τα άλλα ελλήνων πολιτών οι οποίοι είναι χρήσιμοι για φόρους, στρατό και για να λέμε πόσο ανεκτική είναι η χώρα μας – δεν ακούστηκε κουβέντα. Για να μην μιλήσω για την κατάσταση στην Θεσσαλονίκη με την οποία θα ασχοληθώ εκτενώς φέτος.

ΥΓ. Ξεχωρίζω την ανάρτηση του doctor που μόνο για φιλο-ισραηλινός δε μπορεί να κατηγορηθεί – με εκφράζει απόλυτα. Οσο για τους επαγγελματίες αντιφασίστες της Αριστεράς ξεχωρίζω τα σχόλια της antifa-area η οποία είναι ενδεικτική του αντιεξουσιαστικού/αριστερού αντισημιτισμού – δείτε και το About Us του ιστολογίου ενδεικτικό της πνευματικής τους ένδειας που ούτε να αντιγράψει παπαγαλία ένα κείμενο δεν είναι ικανή. Riot Police (MAT) guarding synagogues, meetings of anxious parents in Jewish schools – while synagogues, cemeteries and monuments became targets of vandalism and arson. This was the picture that Greek Jewry presented in December and January when the totality of the greek society decided that the best way to support the “champions of Hamas” (as infamous anti-Semitic newspaper Avriani put it, 29/12/08) was to burst against fellow greek citizens born with the wrong religion

Violent antisemitic incidents occurred in 9 greek cities: Athens, Salonica, Larissa, Volos, Ioannina, Corfu but also in judenrein cities such as Komotini, Veria, Drama. Nationwide we saw outrageous statements on “blood craving jews” by Extreme-Right leader Y.Karatzaferis, while Leftist leaders went overboard in condemning Israel but downright refused to condemn antisemitic incidents in their own home; especially their utilitarian reference to the Holocaust would have been tragic if not comic in front of their downright refusal to join the State Holocaust Memorial Day later in the month as they usually do. Members of the Greek Church like Metrop.of Piraeus Serafim spoke of “zionist monsters with sharp claws” being aided by “massonic lodges”. Metrop.of Salonica Anthimos, (already famous for other anti-jewish statements), said that Jews are being punished for killing Jesus Christ; the “Christ-Killer” card was also played by newspaper frontpages like Vradini speaking of “Crucifixion” and “Ponzio Pilates”.  I won’t even mention the paranoid  antisemitic Christian Orthodox newspapers like Orthodoxos Tipos who frontlined “Zionists and Massons support the slaughtering” but I will limit myself to the infamous antisemitic newspaper Avriani which spoke of American Jews stealing the money and causing the world economic crisis and warned us of American Jews plotting to set off WW3 (!!!) <photos in the left> while also frontlining “Holocaust”. Let’s not forget newspapers like Apogevmatini which frontlined “Holocaust” which had already accused Israelis of harvesting Palestinian organs long before the swedes ever discovering the rumor and all the other newspapers which refused to talk about the wave of antisemitic hatred that swept through Greece.

The Press and the TV did their best to exasperate the climate – a known liberal radio presenter, Jimmy Panousis, said it plainly: “There are no good jews” and that Jews are pigs and murderers but fortunately their days are numbered. But let’s limit ourselves to the tangible aspects of the racist nightmare that swept Greece and included Far Right, Far Left and neonazi groups in Greece.

Athens

Antisemitic graffiti appeared in many streets; in the photo we can see written on the walls of the Jewish Cemetery: “Israelites Jews Murderers”. In case the clearly religious aspect of the hatred went unnoticed, the perpetrators added “Jews” probably because they confused “Israelites” with “Israelis”.

Among the various antiwar protests, the one of neonazi group Chrissi Avgi gains prominence where “Freedom to Palestine” was combined with “Ax and fire to the jewish dogs” and “Jews, Pigs, Murderers of nations”, (Ι have the video of the march – usually they face leftist demonstrators but it appears that this time they were in agreement). Members of the neonazi group were interviewed by national TV stations like Mega TV and why shouldn’t they, Extreme-Right political parties managed to gather 11% in Athens in the recent elections.

Veria

Unknown perpetrators attempted to set on fire the synagogue of the city in the center of Veria, in the old Jewish Quarter named Barbouta – fortunately only the door and the patio suffered damage. Ironically a year ago I was writing about blood libel accusations from trash-TV star and successful author Ioannis Fourakis who accused Jews of human sacrifices during the search of hate-crime victim Alex Mechisvili in the Barbouta district.

Volos

"The State of Israel is murdering! What side are you on?"

The Jewish Community of Volos was targeted by leftist protesters which sprayed graffiti on the exterior wall of the synagogue and against the community itself on 31/12 demanding greek citizens apologizing for what is happening in a third country and asking for loyalty credentials in the place they go to worship;  the synagogue remained closed and services were suspended indefinitely.

The leftist organization Antiexousiastiki Kinisi, which appeared responsible for the act, denied in a statement any involvement after presenting Greek Jews almost as Israelis in exile when drawing a parallel with what the situation of the “turkish” minority of Western Thrace.

Drama

The Holocaust Monument was vandalized with pro-Palestinian graffiti. Of course it wasn’t the first time happening, with the most famous vandalism being the one by a leftist activist some years ago who announced his intentions amidst general indifference to the act he proceeded to do. Besides the wrong spelling the would-be peace activists also erased the names of the murdered, by the nazi Germans and their Bulgarian allies, Jewish Communities of Serres, Drama, Kavala, Nea Orestiada, Didymoteicho, Xanthi, Komotini. What was their message I leave it up to you to interpret.

Salonika

A seminar of the Jewish Museum was postponed after “warnings” of students, while a meeting of the Study Group for Greek Jewry also received “warnings”. I won’t even comment on the tenths of graffiti appearing all over the city equating the Greeks Jews and/or Israelis to the Nazis.

Riot Police (MAT) were often found guarding the offices of the local community and Synagogue. The greek Communist Party once again decided to end its protests in the Holocaust Memorial that had vandalized in 2006, (only to top that with a demonstration against the Salonican Jews themselves the following day ending in the blockade of the communal offices), while leftist parliamentary party Sy.Riz.A. declined to participate in the Holocaust Memorial Day, as it has done frequently the past years. I won’t comment on the bottomless hypocrisy of the local party officials which on the other hand have no problem hosting their “antiwar” rallies on the University which lies on top of the remains of 350.000/500.000 Jews which were never removed from the destroyed, by Greek Authorities during the Holocaust, Jewish Cemetery of Thessaloniki. Indicative is the case of an “anti-racism” activist whose house in Ano Poli district is “adorned” with looted Jewish gravestones.

We have already mentioned above of the antisemitic sermons of the local Metropolite. The irony that the sermon took place in the St.Demetrious Church which is constructed by looted Jewish gravestones was probably lost on the elder priest.

Ioannina

Broken tombs in January

For yet another time the local Jewish Cemetery was vandalized and some tombs were broken on 19/1. These incidents are so common that the president of the community had already warned the Police which declined from taking preventive measures. The Jewish cemetery in Ioannina is a permanent target of extreme-Right vandalism the past years amids the general indifference of the local society and suspicions for possible local Police involvement in the vandalisms. Since January we have had 5 attacks and we’ve reached a level of the remains themselves being desecrated with smashed animals to have any kind of reaction, while the local organization of ruling conservative party Nea Dimokratia refused categorically to condemn the incident.

It’s worthy to point out that these attacks, together with the one of July are probably the worst antisemitic incidents in recent years, (in the photo the broken graves of January).

Corfu

The city Synagogue was vandalized. Of course there were no reactions in an island with a strong antisemitic tradition, (the 1891 pogrom – worst in greek history, local cooperation with the Germans during the Holocaust etc).

Larissa

The town in which the antisemitic madness of both Left and Right was emblematic. During a protest on 1/17 anarchists and Palestinians tried to vandalize the Synagogue. Other autonomous protesters from a specific group managed to stop them despite the general resentment. Riot Police protected the Synagogue for several days, while protesters suggested that Jews rule Greece and thus the Police was protecting “it’s masters”.

The same day FarRight and neonazi groups linked with Chrissi Avghi also held a protest near  the Synagogue and the Jewish Elementary School; the main theme was “Jewish Murderers – Get out of Larissa”.  <screenshot of the invitation in the left – they have removed any trace since> The protest resulted in vandalizing of the Holocaust Monument for the  murdered Jews of Larissa.  Contemporaneously messages circulated calling on the boycotting of Jewish shops and the participation of Chrissi Avghi in protests of the “Paneuropean Comittee on ending the Gaza boycott – GreekPalestian Friendship committee“. Let’s not forget that still today neonazi marches do not fail to pass in front of the Synagogue and shout antisemitic slogans.

Needless to add that the Jewish Community of Larissa after these combined attacks by Leftist and Rightist antisemites was forced to suspend all communal activities until things calmed down, while security measures were increased in the Jewish School which is found in the same area.

Aftermath

He is either ignorant or not-informed or malicious anyone who thinks that in Greece there is no antisemitism and greeks have taken the immunization shot against racism. This includes the possible voters of antisemitic political party LàOS and the Green’s candidates who think the life of Greek Jews “is not deeply affected” and the motives of antisemitic violence are based “on the policy of Israel”.

Much worse happened in Europe like the Netherlands, France or Great Britain – Greece was neither an isolated case, nor would it qualify as the worse offender. Still, nowhere in the world did we see such a deafening lack of reactions by the greek political parties and society in general. I would like to thank Helsinki Monitor, terminal119 for they were the only ones to condemn these acts. Concluding I would like to thank everyone else for the famous greek international solidarity – the innumerable protests for the slaughter of Kurds in Saddam’s Iraq, the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of black christians by muslim arabs in Darfur, the genocide in Rwanda or the mass murders of albanians by our serb brothers in our own back yard or even more recently for the Tamil massacres are immensely revealing of the real motives behind their interest.

I would also like to add that they are ludicrous and deeply hypocritical those who cry over poor professional antiracism activists in Greece who cannot judge Israel without being accused of antisemitism, while they keep their mouths hermetically shut over the orgies that take place in their own country every time the situation in the Middle East gets heated. That every single day there were articles and TV shows on the Palestinian rights while on the fact that in Ioannina no one is was feeling secure even for the fate of the remains of their loved ones – greek citizens useful for taxes, the army and saying how tolerant Greece is – wasn’t being said anything.

Ο λίβελλος του αίματος στην Θεσσαλονίκη και στο Πορτ Σάϊντ / Blood Libel in Salonica and in Port Said.

Κατά τύχη πριν αρκετό καιρό έπεσε στα χέρια μου μια συλλογή από ξένες εφημερίδες που αναφέρουν περιστατικά που αφορούν τους εβραίους στην Εγγύς Ανατολής στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα και τις αρχές του 20ου.

Στην συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση διάλεξα ένα απόσπασμα από τους The New York Times από τις 26 Ιουλίου 1903 που μπορείτε να δείτε εδώ στην αυθεντική μορφή του. Το άρθρο μιλάει για την προετοιμασία ενός ουκάζε από τον Τσάρο της Ρωσικής Αυτοκρατορίας με σκοπό την προστασία από ρώσων εβραίων τις συνεχόμενες σφαγές των πογκρόμ, (η ειρωνεία βέβαια είναι ότι οι σφαγές συχνά ήταν σχεδιασμένες από την ίδια την κεντρική εξουσία).

Η ελπίδα ήταν ότι θα προσέφερε την ίδια προστασία που προσέφερε το φιρμάνι του Σουλτάνου στους εβραίους της Οθωμανικής Αυτοκρατορίας και το οποίο εκδόθηκε μετά τους λίβελους του αίματος που προκάλεσαν τα διαβόητα πογκρόμ της Δαμασκού και της Ρόδου.

Ο αρθρογράφος αναφέρει οτι έκτοτε οι λίβελοι του αίματος ήταν λίγοι και θυμάται μόνο ένα περιστατικό πριν από 15 χρόνια, (δηλαδή περίπου το 1888), στην Θεσσαλονίκη. Τότε οι εβραίοι κατηγορήθηκαν από τον Μητροπολίτη ότι πήραν 2 μικρά χριστιανόπουλα για να πιούν το αίμα τους στις θρησκευτικές τελετές τους – ο αρθρογράφος ισχυρίζεται οτι χάρη στο φιρμάνι ο διοικητής της πόλης Γκαλίμπ Πασά κατάφερε να αποφύγει την επέκταση της αναταραχής  μέχρι που βρέθηκαν τα παιδιά στα χέρια μια καθολικής ιταλικής οικογένειας.

Προσωπικά στην συγκεκριμένη περίπτωση αμφιβάλλω για την πραγματική έκταση των επεισοδίων – ο εβραίοι της πόλης ήταν τόσοι πολλοί και τόσο δυναμικοί και οι χριστιανοί έλληνες τόσοι λίγοι που θα ήταν αδύνατη η δημιουργία εκτεταμένων ταραχών. Αντίθετα η μικρή ελληνική κοινότητα μπορούμε να πούμε οτι διακρίθηκε από την σχετική, για την εποχή βέβαια, μετριοπάθεια της χωρίς όμως όπως είδαμε να στερείται των απαραίτητων για την εποχή θρησκευτικών προκαταλήψεων – μια μετριοπάθεια που προβλημάτιζε τους κατοίκους του νεότευκτου Ελληνικού Βασιλείου.

Από την άλλη η περίπτωση του πογκρόμ στο Πορτ Σάϊντ της Αιγύπτου είναι πολύ διαφορετική. Το 1892 μέλη της ελληνικής παροικίας επιτίθενται σε ένα ή περισσότερους εβραίους και τους σκοτώνουν όταν διαδίδονται φήμες οτι ένα χριστιανόπουλο έχει απαχθεί και θυσιαστεί σε εβραικές τελετουργικές ανθρωποθυσίες. Παραθέτω το ίδιο το κομμάτι γιατί πιστεύω οτι έχει ιδιαίτερο ενδιαφέρον, μπορείτε να το βρείτε στην αυθεντική μορφή εδώ.

The former paper accuses the Jews there of kidnapping a Greek child for sacrificial purposes and says the Greeks attacked and killed two Jews.

The Tageblatt’s story, which is the more probable one, states that some loafing Greeks, seeing Greek and Jewish children playing together, took advantage of this fact to attack a Jewish house, in which they killed an aged Jew, smashing his skull and breaking his ribs and legs, and then heaped insult on the corpse.

Δυο πράγματα να παρατηρήσουμε:
1. Οι ταραχές εμφανίζονται λίγο μετά από το πογκρόμ της Κέρκυρας, (όπως γνωρίζουμε η δολοφονία μια μικρής εβραίας προκαλεί δολοφονικό παροξυσμό στον χριστιανικό λαό της Κέρκυρας και την διάδοση φήμων οτι στην πραγματικότητα ήταν χριστιανή και την είχαν δολοφονήσει οι εβραίοι για να χρησιμοποιήσουν το αίμα της σε θρησκευτικές τελετές – κατά την διάρκεια των επεισοδίων δεκάδες εβραίοι δολοφονούνται και μόνο η απειλούμενη στρατιωτική παρέμβαση ξένων δυνάμεων σταματάει την σφαγή).

2. Το δεύτερο είναι οτι η πρώτη γερμανική εφημερίδα, η Kreuz-Zeitung, δεν αναφέρει απλώς το γεγονός αλλά και αυτή με την σειρά της υιοθετεί τους ισχυρισμούς οτι οι εβραίοι όντως πίνουν το αίμα των χριστιανόπουλων !

Οσο χαζή και απαρχαιωμένη σας φαίνεται η ιδέα των εβραϊκών ανθρωποθυσιών και οτι εγώ, ως αμπραβανέλ, μπορώ να σας αρπάξω για να σας πιω το αίμα μην είστε σίγουροι οτι ανήκουν στον 19ο αιώνα και δεν αποτελούν μέρος της σημερινής ελληνικής πραγματικότητας. Αυτό μπορεί να αφορά τον πρόεδρο ενός αντισημιτικού ελληνικού κοινοβουλευτικού κόμματος που κατηγορεί τους εβραίους οτι μυρίζουν αίμα όπως ο Γιώργος Καρατζαφέρης όπως στον Μεσαίωνα, μπορεί να αφορά μια λαϊκίστικη δεξιά εφημερίδα όπως την Απογευματινή ή μπορεί να αφορά και μια “εναλλακτική” και “προοδευτική” ιστοσελίδα όπως το tvxs.gr του Στέλιου Κούλογλου που με το τελευταίο ρεπορτάζ του αποδεικνύεται οτι αποτελεί την αριστερή λαικίστικη απάντηση στην Απογευματινή.

By sheer chance I happened to run by a collection of clippings by old foreign newspapers that report incidents that regard Jews in the Near East at the end of the 19th century and the beginnings of the 20^th.

In this case I selected a piece by The New York Times published on July, 26th 1903 that can be found in its original form here. It talks about an ukaz being issued by the Czar of the Russian Empire aiming to protect the Russian Jews by the continuous slaughtering of the pogroms, (the irony being that these pogroms were often organized by the State itself).

The hope was that it would offer the same kind of protection that a firman issued by the Sultan in 1840 guaranteed to the Jews of the Ottoman Empire after the blood libels that caused the infamous pogroms of Damascus and Rhodes.

The journalist reports that since then the blood libels had decreased and he remembered only of an incident 15 years ago, (ie about 1888), in “Salonika”. The story was that the orthodox Bishop of accused Jews of taking 2 small christian children to drink their blood in their religious ceremonies – the journalist says that thanks to the firman the governor of the city Ghalib Pasha managed to keep incidents from spreading until the boys were found in a italian catholic family.

Personally I doubt over the effective proportions of the incident; the Jews of the city where so many and so dynamic and the christian greeks where so few that extensive disorders were impossible. On the contrary the small greek community was known for its relative moderation without this meaning that they lacked the necessary, for the times, religious prejudice, (on the other hand  exactly this moderation troubled the inhabitants of the young Greek Kingdom).

On the other hand the situation in Port Said in Egypt was quite different; the pogrom that took place there was organized by some Greeks of the local greek community which attacked and killed some Jew(s) because they believed that they had kidnapped a Greek child to use in ceremonial sacrifices. I would like to post here the whole NYT article because I find it itself rather revealing:

We can note two interesting aspects in this story:
1. The incidents happen just after the Corfu Pogrom, (as we know the murder of a young jewish girl causes  a murderous spree of the christian population of the island fueled by the rumor that the girl was a christian one and the Jews had murdered her in order to use her blood in religious ceremonies – tenths of Jews are murdered and only the threatened military intervention of Europeans puts an end to the pogrom).

2. The second is that the first german newspaper, the Kreuz-Zeitung, does not only report of the murders but in its turn adopts the claims that Jews drink the blood of young christian children !

As old and antiquated may seem the idea that Jews sacrifice young christian children and I, as abravanel, may snatch you to drink your blood do not be sure that these are not part of contemporary greek society. This rumors may regard the leader of an antisemitic parliamentary party like Yorgos Karatzaferis, MP who accuses Jews of reeking blood and Christ-Killers like the Middle Ages, or a yellow populistic newspaper like Apogevmatini, or an “alternative” and “liberal” news site like tvxs.gr of Stelios Kuloglou which proves to be the leftist populistic response to Apogevmatini with his latest reportage.

Jewish Cemetery Ioannina (again) vandalized / Εβραϊκό Νεκροταφείο Ιωαννίνων βανδαλίζεται (ξανά)

The Jewish Cemetery of Ioannina/Jannina, home to one of the oldest communities of the Diaspora – the Romaniote Jews, has been vandalized again for the 3rd time since the beginning of the year. Vandalized for the first time during the war against Hamas in January, subsequently it was vandalized once more in March and again (!) was vandalized on Wednesday June 3rd 2009. It had already been targetted by antisemites tenths of times during the past decade, while never has anyone been even considered a possible suspect.

This time the antisemitic vandals went to the extreme limits – they destroyed 7/8 graves and the Holocaust Memorial inside the cemetery. The graves were not only smashed but a tortoise was killed to use it’s blood (!) to complete the unholy attack. One of the graves belonged to the Benefactor of the city of Ioannina Iosif Ganni and another one belonged to the mother of the president of the Jewish Community of Ioannina that had passed away relatively recently. These targeted and methodical destructions pinpoint to a clear plan and not some random antisemitic freak incident.The president of the Jewish Community, Moisis Elliasaf, who saw his own mother’s tomb destroyed and smeared with blood, accused the Greek Police of showing a complete lack of willingness to apprehend the perpetrators or prevent similar phenomena in the future. The Cemetery has been vandalized tenths of times in the past and sometimes the president himself has anticipated specific attacks and has asked, to no avail, for police protection – he was met with complete indifference, while the Police.

There is also the question on how the neighboring houses heard and saw nothing while the Cemetery is inside the urban area and the vandalism must have taken time but also the smashing of marbles is not exactly a quiet procedure. On a positive side the local Press has condemned unequivocally with harsh words these attacks and has downright refused to brush aside the issue, unlike the Police or greek media in General; the video is from Ioannina TV, while also local newspapers like Neoi Agones which has a good detailed report on the story or online portals as Epirus Post condemned vehemently the attack.

Το Εβραϊκό Νεκροταφείο Ιωαννίνων, μια κοινότητα από τις παλαιότερες της Διασποράς – σπίτι των Εβραίων Ρωμανιωτών, έγινε στόχος βανδαλισμού ξανά για 3η φορά από την αρχή του χρόνου. Πρώτη φορά τον Ιανουάριο κατά την διάρκεια του πολέμου με την Χαμάς, ξανά μετά τον Μάρτιο και ξανά (!) τα χαράματα της Τετάρτης 3 Ιουλίου 2009. Αυτή ήταν μόνο μια, από τις δεκάδες βεβηλώσεις την τελευταία δεκαετία, που έχει υποστεί το νεκροταφείο, χωρίς ποτέ να υπάρξει έστω και ένας πιθανός ύποπτος.

Αυτή τη φορά οι βάνδαλοι αντισημίτες ξεπέρασαν κάθε όριο – έσπασαν 7/8 τάφους και το Μνημείο των Γιαννιωτών Εβραίων που δολοφονήθηκαν στο Ολοκαύτωμα μέσα στο νεκροταφείο. Οι τάφοι όχι απλώς καταστράφηκαν αλλά χρησιμοποιήθηκε και μια χελώνα για να τους πασαλείψουν με αίμα (!) κατά την διάρκεια αυτής της ανίερης επίθεσης. Ενας από τους τάφους ανήκε στον Ευεργέτη της πόλης των Ιωαννίνων Ιωσήφ Γκανή, ενώ ένας άλλος στην μητέρα του προέδρου της Ισραηλιτικής Κοινότητας. Αυτές οι στοχευμένες επιθέσεις είναι ενδεικτικές οτι δεν αποτελούν ένα μεμονωμένο περιστατικό που να οφείλεται σε κάποιο “τρελό”, αλλά υπήρξαν προϊόν προσεκτικού σχεδιασμού.

Ο πρόεδρος της Κοινότητας, Μωυσής Ελλιασάφ, που είδε το τάφο της ίδιας του της μητέρας κατεστραμμένο, κατηγόρησε την Αστυνομία οτι δείχνει απόλυτη απροθυμία για να συλλάβει τους δράστες ή να αποτρέψει παρόμοια γεγονότα στο μέλλον. Το νεκροταφείο έχει βανδαλισθεί δεκάδες φορές και σε μερικές από αυτές είχε υπάρξει συγκεκριμένη προειδοποίηση και έκκληση για προστασία από τον κ.Ελλιασάφ, χωρίς κανένα αποτέλεσμα.

Επίσης ανακύπτει το θέμα του πως οι γείτονες δεν είδαν και δεν άκουσαν τίποτε, ενώ το νεκροταφείο βρίσκεται μέσα στον οικιστικό ιστό της πόλης και η καταστροφή μαρμάρων δεν είναι ακριβώς μια ήσυχη ή μη-χρονοβόρα διαδικασία. Στα θετικά του γεγονότος είναι η αντίδραση των τοπικών ΜΜΕ που καταδίκασαν με σκληρά λόγια τις επιθέσεις, σε αντίθεση με την Ελληνική Αστυνομία ή τα ελληνικά ΜΜΕ γενικά. Το βίντεο πιο πάνω είναι από τα Ioannina TV, ενώ τοπικές εφημερίδες όπως οι Νέοι Αγώνες που έχει ένα καλό αναλυτικό ρεπορτάζ ή ιστότοποι όπως η Epirus Post καταδίκασαν με σφοδρότητα την επίθεση.

Vile antisemitism by Avriani newspaper/ Χυδαίος αντισημιτισμός από την “Αυριανή”

The recent presidential campaign of the US has been one of the most followed ones in the past years. In Greece the huge antipathy for George W. Bush has led to an overwhelming support for Barack Obama who is deemed as more friendly to greek interests and the only one able to change drastically US policy.

During this campaign, possibly due to the ignorance which characterizes a significant part of the greek Press, innuendos concerning the Jewish vote and the Jewish (sic) lobby where abundant; whether this being a direct statement that Bush relied on the Jewish lobby or a more subtle one when state television NET noted with meaning that only F.Y.R.O.M. and Israel supported McCain. Their ignorance is evident by the fact that American Jews have, historically, always massively supported Democratic candidates, being self described as liberals. This holds true for Al Gore in 2000 with 79% of the total jewish voters, John Kerry in 2004 with 74% and with Barack Obama for a projected 77%. This has been consistent with all the polls who have for months predicted the traditional huge gap between Republicans and Democrats – not that greek Press would ever care to note.

But yesterdays front page by Avriani newspaper was beyond any limit and was blatant, pure and vile antisemitism:

In this video we can see a self proclaimed antisemitic, neo-nazi group of students (of the “Venetokleio” High-School of Rhodes) which urinates on the Memorial of the Holocaust/Shoah which commemorates the extermination in nazi death camps of 1.522 Jews from Rhodes out of a total of 1.673 which were deported. Today only 30 – 40 Jews still live in Rhodes although there is a big community of Rhodian Jews (Rhodesli) in the USA which often travels to the island.

For some time now it has been rumored that Dimosthenis Liakopoulos, a TV salesman specializing in selling apocryphistic books – full of conspiracy theories, “Hellenic Truth” and good ol’anti-jewish hate speech, was close in making the leap from the tenths of small local TV stations where he currently appears to a big national TV channel.

Well it’s now a fact: the man who created a ludicrous parallel mythology where the greek race of the El fights against the zionist Nefelim & contemporaneously warns us of the evil Satan-induced zionism, appears regularly in Antenna TV whose ratings place him first or second place among national tv stations. Information (1, 2 in Cyprous also) says that he’ll manage the 2am-4am zone of the station with complete editorial freedom, but as the picture shows he has already began.
