En djenayo de 1492, la kayida de Granada korona la fin de la Rekonkista. Izabel de Kastiya (1451 – 1504) i Fernando II de Aragon (1479 – 1519) pensan kumplir kon la unidad relijioza de su Estado. El Edikto de Ekspulsion de Granada, firmado el 31 de marso de 1492, se pregona un mes despues. Los Djudios de Espanya pueden eskojer entre aboltarsen o irsen. Se les da tres mezes para vender sus bienes, a korruto por un mendrugo de pan, ama no pueden yevarsen ni oro, ni plata. Dos ombres miran de ir en kontra. El tezorero mayor de los soveranos, Avraam Seneor de Segovia i su arrekovdador de dasios, Itshak Abravanel (1437- 1508). Ambos finansieros defenden en vano la kavza de los Djudios de Espanya al lado de Fernando i de Izabel. El primero renunsia i aksepta la konversion. Abravanel, el, eskoje el egzilio. Akel savio i politiko de alto rango, afamado por so koraje, desha su nombre en un refran djudeo-espanyol, Basta mi nombre ke me yamo Abravanel.

The fall of Granada, in January 1492, marked the end of the Reconquest. Isabella of Castille (1451 – 1504) and Ferdinand of Argon (1479 – 1519) then thought about completing the religious unity of their country. The royal decree of expulsion signed in Granada on March 31, 1492, was promulgated a month later. The Jews of Spain had only two choices: convert or leave. They were given three months to sell their property, in most cases for a pittance, and they were not allowed to take with them any gold or silver. Two men tried to intercede on their behalf: the Royal Superintended of Finance, Abraham Seneor of Segovia and his tax collector Isaac Abravanel (1437 – 1508). Both financiers pleaded in vain with Ferdinand and Isabella on behalf of the Jews of Spain. Abraham Seneor gave in and converted, while Abravanel opted for exile. This outstanding scholar and politician, praised for his courage, gave his name to a Judeo-Spanish proverb: Basta mi nombre ke me yamo Abravanel, “My name is Abravanel, and that is enough”.

Who am I ? / Ποιός είμαι ;

This excerpt comes from a book which I’ve published here and gave me the original inspiration for my fictional name, abravanel. I am a Greek and I am a Jew, born in Greece like my forefathers who were part of one of the oldest jewish presences in Europe, the Greek Jewry, measuring more than 2000 years of existence.

I am of course in no way related to any surviving members of the Abravanel family in Greece or abroad. My pen name is nothing more than a tribute to the spirit and deeds of Isaac Abravanel and how the memory of his memory was kept alive by the Greek Jewry throughout the centuries – it is not my real name.

Αυτό το απόσπασμα προέρχεται από ένα βιβλίο που έχω δημοσιεύσει και μου έδωσε την αρχική έμπνευση για την δημιουργία του ψευδώνυμου μου, αμπραβανέλ. Είμαι Έλληνας και είμαι Εβραίος, γεννημένος στην Ελλάδα όπως οι πρόγονοι μου που ήταν μέρος μιας από τις παλαιότερες εβραϊκές παρουσίες στην Ευρώπη, τον Ελληνικό Εβραϊσμό και που μετρά πάνω από 2000 χρόνια ύπαρξης.

Προφανώς δεν συνδέομαι με κάποιο σημερινό μέλος της οικογένειας Αμπραβανέλ στην Ελλάδα ή στο εξωτερικό. Το ψευδώνυμο μου δεν είναι παρά ένας φόρος τιμής στο πνεύμα και τις πράξεις του Ισαάκ Αμπραβανέλ και στο πως η μνήμη του διατηρήθηκε ζωντανή από τον Ελληνικό Εβραϊσμό κατά την διάρκεια των αιώνων – δεν είναι το πραγματικό μου όνομα.
