Το 1973 ο Ασέρ Μωυσής, μια από τις σημαντικότερες προσωπικότητες του Ελληνικού Εβραϊσμού του 20ου αιώνα, έγραψε ένα βιβλίο για την προέλευση των ονομάτων των Εβραίων στην Ελλάδα, το «Η ονοματολογία των Εβραίων της Ελλάδος». Κατά ένα περίεργο τρόπο αυτό έπεσε στα χέρια εθνικιστικών οργανώσεων που ανακάλυψαν μια μέθοδο για να αναγνωρίζουν τον Οβριό που κυκλοφορεί ανάμεσα τους και την σκάναραν και κυκλοφορεί στο Διαδίκτυο εδώ και αρκετά χρόνια. Οπότε αυτή δεν είναι παρά μια η γνωστή έκδοση στην οποία έχω απλώς αφαιρέσει τα λογότυπα και συνδέσμους προς τους ιστότοπους τους.

Το ίδιο το βιβλίο είναι αξιόλογο και αξίζει να βρίσκεται στις βιβλιοθήκες σας, αν μη τι άλλο γιατί επιτρέπει να μάθει κάποιος την σημασία του «χριστιανικού» του ονόματος που είναι εβραϊκής προέλευσης την πλειοψηφία των περιπτώσεων. Επίσης αντανακλά τις διαφορετικές φάσεις στην ιστορία του Ελληνικού Εβραϊσμού και αποτελεί μια καλή αρχή για όσους επιθυμούν να προχωρήσουν σε μια γενεαλογική έρευνα, έχοντας υπόψιν οτι ο Α.Μωυσής δεν ήταν γλωσσολόγος και το βιβλίο έχει ορισμένα λάθη.

In 1973 Asher Moisis, one of the key figures of 20th century Greek Jewry, wrote this book on the origin of the names of Jews in Greek called «The onomatology of the Jews of Greece». By a strange way this book ended in the hands of nationalistic elements who found out the ultimate way to discover the Jewz among them and scanned it and uploaded to circulate freely for many years. So this text is nothing but the already well known edition cleansed from their logos and links.

As far as the book is concerned it is quite good and certainly worth of a place on your bookshelves, if not for anything else for the possibility of one to learn of the meaning of his «christian» name which in most cases is of Jewish origin. Also it reflects the different phases of the Greek Jewry and is a good start for those interested in a genealogical research keeping in mind that A.Moisis was not a linguist and the book does contain mistakes.

Πανό νεοναζί στο Ελλάδα-Ισραήλ 2/4/2009

Η Εθνική Ομάδα της Ελλάδας στο ποδόσφαιρο παίζει με την Εθνική Ομάδα του Ισραήλ και δυστυχώς τέτοιοι αγώνες γίνονται ευκαιρία για χυδαίο αντισημιτισμό από ακροδεξιούς νεοναζιστές και κομουνιστές όπως πέρσι στο Ηράκλειο, Κρήτης. Ελπίζω οτι σήμερα το βράδυ οι (χριστιανοί) φίλαθλοι θα μπορέσουν απλά να μιμηθούν το πάθος που πρώτοι έδειξαν οι νεαροί Eλληνοεβραίοι στο να νικήσουν το Ισραήλ – η ευκαιρία; Η ελληνική συμμετοχή στην 18η Μακαμπιάδα το καλοκαίρι του 2009 στο Ισραήλ, όταν η Ελλάδα κληρώθηκε να παίξει με το Ισραήλ στο μπάσκετ.

Για όσους αναρωτιόνται οι Μακαμπιάδα (מַכַּבִּיָּה‎) είναι οι διεθνείς αγώνες που διεξάγονται κάθε 4 χρόνια στο Ισραήλ και θεωρούνται ως η μια από τις μεγαλύτερες αθλητικές συναντήσεις διεθνώς, (πχ η διοργάνωση του 2009 υπήρξε το μεγαλύτερο αθλητικό γεγονός της χρονιάς). Είναι ανοικτές σε όλους τους Ισραηλινούς, ανεξαρτήτως θρησκείας (πχ μια αραβοισραηλινή νικήτρια) και σε όλους τους εβραίους αθλητές από όλες τις χώρες, (ο πιο διάσημος νικητής έχει υπάρξει ο αμερικανόεβραίος πολυ-ολυμπιονίκης Μαρκ Σπίτς). Η πρώτη Μακαμπιάδα διοργανώθηκε το 1932 στην κατεχόμενη από την Μ.Βρετανία Παλαιστίνη και με την Ελλάδα να είναι ανάμεσα στις 18 ιδρυτικές χώρες – με τον βαλκανιονίκη και κάτοχο του πανελληνίου ρεκόρ Λέων Πασύ από την Καβάλα να κερδίζει το πρώτο ελληνικό μετάλιο, ένα αργυρό στα 400μ. Άλλωστε αξίζει να σημειωθεί οτι οι ελληνικοί σύλλογοι Μακαμπί είναι από τους αρχαιότερους συλλόγους στον κόσμο: μάλιστα ο Γ.Σ.Μακαμπή Θεσσαλονίκης είναι ο αρχαιότερος αθλητικός σύλλογος της Θεσσαλονίκης έχοντας ιδρυθεί το 1908 και συνεχίζει την δράση του μέχρι σήμερα. Η 18η Μακαμπιάδα έλαβε χώρα το 2009 με περισσότερους από 6.000 αθλητές από 53 χώρες και η Ελλάδα ήταν εκεί με αναβαθμισμένη παρουσία σε σχέση με τα προηγούμενα χρόνια.

Αν και οι εποχές των σπουδαίων ελληνοεβραίων αθλητών έχουν περάσει η ομάδα μπάσκετ διέθετε στις τάξεις της αξιόλογους αθλητές όπως τον Τζάκο Αρούχ που έχει παίξει και στην Α1 ανδρών με τον Μακεδονικό. Αξίζει να σημειωθεί οτι μια μελλοντική συνύπαρξη του Τζάκο Αρούχ και Μάριου Ματαλών, κυρίαρχης μορφής στην Εθνική Ομάδα Εφήβων, υπόσχεται μια ισχυρή ελληνική ομάδα για την 19η Μακαμπιάδα το 2013.

Σας αφήνω με μερικές φωτογραφίες από την ελληνική συμμετοχή στην τελευταία Μακαμπιάδα  ελπίζοντας οτι οι φίλαθλοι της Εθνικής Ομάδας ποδοσφαίρου να θυμούνται οτι το πρώτο γκολ στην ιστορίας της Εθνικής Ομάδας το οφείλουν στον Αλμπέρτο Ναχμία, (αναλυτική ανάρτηση εδώ), κορυφαίο παίκτη της Εθνικής Ομάδας και του Ηρακλή και της Μακαμπή οπότε οι γνωστές προσβολές μπορούν να αποφευχθούν.

Πανό νεοναζί στο Ελλάδα-Ισραήλ 2/4/2009

The Greek National Football (soccer) Team is facing Israel today  in the challenger round for the EuroCup and unfortunately games like these have been occasion for antisemitic tirades by neonazi and communist supporters like the one last year in Iraklion, Crete. I only hope that the (christian) fans will demonstrate simply the passion that young Greek Jews were first to demonstrate in defeating Israel – the chance ? The greek participation in the 18th Maccabiah, during the summer of 2009 when Greece played with Israel in the basketball tournament.

For those who might wonder the  Maccabiah (מַכַּבִּיָּה‎) is the international games who take place every 4 years in Israel and is considered one of the most important athletics events in the world, (eg the 2009 Maccabiah was the biggest athletic event of 2009). They are open to all Israelis irrespective of religion (eg an arab-israeli medalist) and to all jewish athletes throughout the world, (eg the most famous participant being the multi-olympic medalist Marc Spitz). The first Maccabiah was hosted in the, occupied by Britain, Palestine in 1932 and Greece was among the 18 founding countries; Balkan Games champion and national record holder Leon Passy from Kavala won the first medal for Greece with a silver medal in the 400mt. Besides it should be remembered that the greek Maccabi clubs are among the oldest ones in the world;  S.C.Maccabi Salonica is the oldest club of Salonica being founded in 1908 and is still active today. The 18th Maccabiah took place in 2009 with more than 6.000 athletes from 53 countries and Greece was there with a enhanced presence compared to previous years.

Although the times of important greek-jewish athletes are a thing of the past, the basketball club included among its members Jacko Arouh, a former Greek League player with Makedonikos. It is worth noting that a future co-existence of Jacko Arouh and Mario Matalon, dominant figure in the under-21 Greek National Team, promises a powerful greek team for the 19th Maccabiah of 2013.

I’m closing this brief post with some photos from the greek participation in the last Maccabiah and I hope the fans of the Greek National Football Team keep in mind that the first goal in the history of the team was scored by Alberto Nahmia, (a detailed presentation of him in this post) , top player of the National Team, Iraklis FC and Maccabi SC so the usual insults can be avoided.

«Η Μνήμη σας ας είναι η Αγάπη»/»May Your Memory Be Love»

Το Μάρτιο του 1943, ο εικοσάχρονος Οβαδιά Μπαρούχ εκτοπίστηκε μαζί με την οικογένεια του από την Ελλάδα στο Άουσβιτς-Μπίρκεναου. Επί την άφιξη του, όλη η οικογένεια και οι συγγενείς του στάλθηκαν στους θαλάμους αερίων. Ο Οβαδιά πάλεψε να επιβιώσει μέχρι την απελευθέρωση του από το στρατόπεδο εξοντώσεως Ματχάουζεν τον Μάιο του 1945. Ενώ βρίσκονταν στο Άουσβιτς ο Οβαδιά γνώρισε την Αλίζα Σαρφατή, μια νεαρή Εβραία από την πόλη του και οι δύο ανέπτυξαν μια ιστορία αγάπης παρά τις απάνθρωπες συνθήκες. Αυτή η ταινία απεικονίζει την αξιοπρόσεκτη και συγκινητική ιστορία αγάπης και επιβίωσης στο Άουσβιτς, μιας απίστευτης συνάντησης μετά το Ολοκαύτωμα και το σπίτι που δημιούργησαν μαζί στο Ισραήλ.

Από το όλο φιλμ με συγκίνησε περισσότερο η κραυγή O Madre του Οβαδιά όταν τον έδερναν, σκέφτηκα τους δικούς μου ανθρώπους. Άλλα κομμάτια που μου έμειναν; Όταν έβλεπα τα τρένα μου ήρθε φλασιά από τα τα εισιτήρια που χρέωσε ο ελληνικός ΟΣΕ της εποχής, οι Σιδηρόδρομοι Ελληνικού Κράτους, στους εκτοπισμένους και που φυλάσσονται στο Εβραικό Μουσείο –  φυσιολογικότητα μέσα στην παράνοια. Η κάρτα εισαγωγής στο Άουσβιτς που συμπληρώνονταν για κάθε κρατούμενο – για τον Οβαδιά μπορείτε να δείτε Saloniki, Griechenland και Sapfus 10, η οδός του σπιτιού του πίσω από το Δικαστικό Μέγαρο. Στο κλιπ με τον τίτλο «The Return to Life» μπορείτε να δείτε τον Οβαδιά σ’ ένα μικρό γήπεδο στην αρχή: ανήκει σε ένα από τα πλεον ιστορικά κτίρια της Θεσσαλονίκης, το Ματανότ Λαεβιονίμ που χτίστηκε από τον διάσημο σαλονικιό αρχιτέκτονα Ζακ Μωσσέ και σήμερα λειτουργεί ως το εβραϊκό δημοτικό σχολείο. Μια από τις πλέον διάσημες φωτογραφίες είναι αυτή των μαζικών γάμων των επιζώντων του Άουσβιτς στα σκαλιά του κτιρίου.

Όλα τα βιντεάκια είναι περίπου 10′ στο σύνολο και ανήκουν στο ντοκιμαντέρ «Η Μνήμη σας ας είναι η Αγάπη». Είναι καλογυρισμένα, ειδικά το τρίτο που έχει και όμορφη μουσική οπότε χαρείτε τα. Οι ιστορίες των επιζώντων είναι πάντα ένα θαύμα, μια απίστευτη εξαίρεση στον κανόνα.

In March 1943, twenty-year-old Ovadia Baruch was deported together with his family from Greece to Auschwitz-Birkenau. Upon arrival, his extended family was sent to the gas chambers. Ovadia struggled to survive until his liberation from the Mathausen concentration camp in May 1945. While in Auschwitz, Ovadia met Aliza Tzarfati, a young Jewish woman from his hometown, and the two developed a loving relationship despite inhuman conditions. This film depicts their remarkable, touching story of love and survival in Auschwitz, a miraculous meeting after the Holocaust and the home they built together in Israel.

From the whole film I really was moved when I heard the O Madre cry of Ovadia when he was beaten, I thought of my family. Other parts that struck me ? When I was seeing the trains, the tickets of the deportees charged by the greek Railway System flashed in my head – normality among the paranoia. The report card of the admittance to Auschwitz filled out for every detainee; for Ovadia one sees Saloniki, Griechenland and his address, Sapfus 10. In the clip titled «The Return to Life» you can see Ovadia in a small court in the beginning: it belongs to one of Salonica’s most reknown buildings, the Matanot Laevionim built by salonican architect Zacque Mosse which today functions as a Jewish Elementary School. One of the most famous photographs are the one of the mass weddings of Auschwitz survivors in the stairs of the building.

All of the videos last about 10′ and they belong to the documentary «May Your Memory Be Love». Τhey’re a nice piece of filming,  especially the third one which also has some nice music so enjoy them. The stories of survivors are always a miracle, an incredible exception to the rule.

Ελληνικά μνημεία για Σοά στο Ισραήλ / Greek Shoah monuments in Israel

Κατά τύχη ψάχνοντας στο Διαδίκτυο έπεσα πάνω σε μια σελίδα που παραθέτει ορισμένα από τα μνημεία για το Ολοκαύτωμα/Σοά που αφορούν την Ελλάδα στο Ισραήλ.

• Το κυριότερο είναι αυτό που υπάρχει στην Κοιλάδα των Κοινοτήτων στο Γιαντ Βασέμ που είναι το επίσημο μουσείο της Σοά στην Ιερουσαλήμ. Η Κοιλάδα των Κοινοτήτων είναι ένας λαβύρινθος που σκάφτηκε μέσα στον βράχο και σε 107 τοίχους υπενθυμίζει τις 5000 εβραικές κοινότητες που υπήρξαν θύματα. Η Ελλάδα αντιπροσωπεύεται από δυο τοίχους: έναν που αναφέρει τις ελληνικές πόλεις της Αθήνας, Αρτας, Βόλου, Χαλκίδας, Χανίων, Ρόδου, Κέρκυρας, Λάρισσας, Καστοριάς, Κως, Ορεστιάδας, Καβάλας, Αλεξανδρούπολης, Δράμας, Κομοτηνής, Σερρών, Βέροιας, Ιωαννίνων κ.α. και ένα ακόμη που αναφέρει αποκλειστικά την Θεσσαλονίκη. By chance searching the Internet I happened to run into a page which lists some of the monuments to the Shoah/Holocaust which regard Greece in Israel.

• The main one is the existing one in the Valley of the Communities in Yad Vashem, the official Museum for the Shoah in Jerusalem. The Valley of the Communities is a monuments literally dug into the bedrock and in 107 walls reminds of the 5000 jewish communities which suffered during the Shoah. Greece is represented by two walls: one with the names of the greek cities of Athens, Arta, Volos, Chalkida, Chania, Rhodes, Corfu, Larissa, Kastoria, Kos, Orestiada, Preveza, Karditsa, Kavala, Alexandroupolis, Drama, Komotini, Serres, Veria, Ioannina and others; the other one states solely the community of Salonika.  (photo by Werner Kunz here)

Ιανουάριος ’09: Αντισημιτική βία στην Ελλάδα/January ’09: Antisemitic violence in Greece

Διμοιρίες των ΜΑΤ έξω από συναγωγές, συσκέψεις σε εβραϊκά σχολεία – ενώ συναγωγές, νεκροταφεία και μνημεία γινόντουσαν στόχος βανδαλισμών και εμπρησμών. Αυτή ήταν η εικόνα που παρουσίαζε ο Ελληνικός Εβραϊσμός τους μήνες Δεκέμβριο και Ιανουάριο όταν το σύνολο της ελληνικής κοινωνίας αποφάσισε ότι ο καλύτερος τρόπος να στηρίξει τους «αγωνιστές της Χαμάς» (η γνωστή αντισημιτική εφημερίδα Αυριανή, 29/12/08) ήταν να ξεσπάσουν ενάντια στους έλληνες συμπολίτες που γεννήθηκαν με την λάθος θρησκεία. Αν και το είχα γράψει από μήνες είχα αποφασίσει να μην το δημοσιεύσω αλλά η πεποίθηση οτι στην Ελλάδα ο αντισημιτισμός περιορίζεται στο ΛάΟΣ του Γ.Καρατζαφέρη ή είναι μόνο λόγια οφείλει να αντιμετωπίσει τα γεγονότα.

Βίαια αντισημιτικά γεγονότα συνέβησαν 9 ελληνικές πόλεις: σε Αθήνα, Θεσσαλονίκη, Λάρισα, Βόλο, Ιωάννινα, Κέρκυρα αλλά και σε judenrein πόλεις όπως Κομοτηνή, Βέροια και Δράμα. Σε πανελλήνιο επίπεδο είδαμε εξοργιστικές δηλώσεις για «εβραίους που μυρίζουν αίμα» από τον ηγέτη της Ακρας Δεξιάς Γιώργο Καρατζαφέρη και που σιωπηλά επικροτήθηκαν από τον Πρόεδρο της Βουλης Δ.Σιούφα. Η Αριστερά καταδίκασε με την μέγιστη αυστηρότητα το Ισραήλ και ταυτόχρονα αρνήθηκε να καταδικάσει τα βίαια αντισημιτικά επεισόδια στην ίδια της την χώρα, ενώ τραγελαφική ήταν η χρησιμοθηρική αναφορά στο «Ολοκαύτωμα» στη Γάζα από ανθρώπους που ευτελίζουν ενσυνείδητα την Σοά και αρνούνται να συμμετάσχουν σε όποια τελετή μνήμης.

Στελέχη της Εκκλησίας της Ελλάδος όπως ο Μητρ.Πειραιώς Σεραφείμ μίλησαν για «σιωνιστικά τέρατα με γαμψά νύχια» που στηρίζονται από τις «μασονικές στοές» και κατηγόρησε ευθέως τους έλληνες εβραίους, (ο νεοναζιστικός Στόχος επικροτεί). Άλλοι όπως ο Μητροπ.Θεσσαλονικής Ανθιμος, (γνωστός για άλλες αμφισβητήσιμες δηλώσεις), είπε οτι οι εβραίοι τιμωρούνται γιατί «σταύρωσαν το Χριστό» και είναι θεοκτόνοι – άλλωστε την κάρτα των θεοκτόνων την έπαιξαν και πρωτοσέλιδα εφημερίδων όπως η Βραδυνή μιλώντας για «Σταύρωση» και «Πόντιους Πιλάτους».  Δεν αναφέρομαι καν στα πρωτοσέλιδα παρανοϊκών αντισημιτικών ορθόδοξων εφημερίδων όπως ο Ορθόδοξος Τύπος που μιλούσαν «ΣΙΩΝΙΣΤΑΙ ΚΑΙ ΜΑΣΩΝΟΙ ΣΤΗΡΙΖΟΥΝ ΤΗΝ ΣΦΑΓΗ», αλλά θα περιορισθώ στην αντισημιτική εφημερίδα Αυριανή που στο πρωτοσέλιδο δεξιά κατηγόρησε τους αμερικανοεβραίους οτι έκλεψαν τον πλούτο, δημιούργησαν την παγκόσμια οικονομική κρίση μας πληροφορούσε για τις προσπάθειες των αμερικανοεβραίων να ξεκινήσουν τον Γ’ΠΠ (!!!), ενώ και αυτή μίλησε για «Ολοκαύτωμα». Μη ξεχάσουμε την Απογευματινή με πρωτοσέλιδο «Ολοκαύτωμα» και που είχε υποστηρίξει στο παρελθόν οτι οι ισραηλινοί κλέβουν τα όργανα των Παλαιστινίων και όλες τις υπόλοιπες εφημερίδες που αρνήθηκαν συστηματικά να αναφερθούν στο ρατσιστικό μίσος που κυρίευσε την χώρα.

Αξίζει να σημειωθεί το μένος που επιδείχθηκε από τηλεοράσεις και ραδιόφωνα – ξεχωρίζει η ραδιοφωνική εκπομπή του Τζίμη Πανούση που ξεκαθάριζε οτι δεν υπάρχει καλός εβραίος αλλά είναι όλοι γουρούνια και δολοφόνοι αλλά ευτυχώς οι μέρες τους είναι μετρημένες. Αλλά ας περιοριστούμε στις απτές εκφράσεις του εφιάλτη του ρατσισμού που εκφράστηκε από την Ακρα Αριστερά, την Ακρα Δεξιά και τις νεοναζιστικές ομάδες της χώρας μας.

Αντισημιτικά γκράφιτι εμφανίστηκαν σε πολλούς δρόμους της πόλης – εδώ βλέπουμε σύνθημα στο εβραϊκό νεκροταφείο που μιλάει για «ΙΣΡΑΗΛΙΤΕΣ ΕΒΡΑΙΟΙ ΦΟΝΙΑΔΕΣ». Αν υπήρχε κάποια αμφιβολία για την θρησκευτική δίασταση της αντίθεσης, οι δράστες φρόντισαν να το ξεκαθαρίσουν με το να προσθέσουν το εβραίος μετά το ισραηλίτης, αφού μάλλον το μπέρδεψαν με το ισραηλινός.

Μεταξύ των πολλών αντιπολεμικών διαδηλώσεων ξεχωρίζουν αυτές της Χρυσής Αυγής όπου η «Λευτεριά στην Παλαιστίνη» συνδυάζονταν αρμονικά με το «Τσεκούρι και φωτιά στα εβραϊκά σκυλιά» και το «Εβραίοι,Γουρούνια,Φονιάδες των Λαών», (έχω και το βιντεο με την παρέλαση τους στο κέντρο της Αθήνας – σε άλλες περιπτώσεις αριστερές και αναρχικές ομάδες αντιστέκονται αλλά από ότι φαίνεται δεν πρέπει να διαφωνούσαν σε αυτή την περίπτωση). Στελέχη της οργάνωσης έδωσαν συνεντεύξεις σε πανελλήνιους τηλεοπτικούς σταθμούς όπως το Μέγκα – και γιατί όχι; Αλλωστε τα διάφορα ακροδεξιά κόμματα μάζεψαν περίπου 11% στην Αθήνα στις ευρωεκλογές που ακολούθησαν.

Βέροια

Άγνωστοι προσπάθησαν να πυρπολήσουν την Συναγωγή που βρίσκεται μέσα στην εβραϊκή συνοικία της Μπαρμπούτας μέσα στην πόλη της Βέροιας – ευτυχώς η φωτιά δεν επεκτάθηκε και μόνο η είσοδος και η βεράντα υπέστησαν ζημίες. Κατά διαβολική σύμπτωση πριν ένα χρόνο έγραφα για τις κατηγορίες οτι οι εβραίοι ενέχονται σε ανθρωποθυσίες που διατυπώθηκαν τον τηλεστάρ και επιτυχημένο συγγραφέα Ιωάννη Φουράκη, λόγω των ερευνών για την εύρεση του Αλεξ Μεσχισβίλι κοντά στην Μπαρμπούτα.

Βόλος

Η εβραϊκή κοινότητα της πόλης στοχοποιήθηκε από αριστερούς «ακτιβιστές» οι οποίοι έγραψαν συνθήματα στο τοίχο της συναγωγής της πόλης στις 31/12 απαιτώντας από έλληνες να απολογηθούν για το τι συμβαίνει σε ένα τρίτο κράτος και πιστοποιητικό κοινωνικών φρονημάτων στο χώρο όπου προσέρχονται για να προσευχηθούν – οι λειτουργίες αναβλήθηκαν και η συναγωγή έκλεισε μέχρι να περάσει η μπόρα.

Η αριστερή οργάνωση Αντιεξουσιαστική Κίνηση, που εμφανίστηκε ως υπεύθυνη για το γεγονός, με ανακοίνωση της αποποιήθηκε κάθε ανάμειξη αλλά ταυτόχρονα φρόντισε να  εμφανίσει την εβραίους σχεδόν σαν απόδημους ισραηλινούς με το να ταυτίσει την κατάσταση τους με την «τουρκική» μειονότητα της Δυτικής Θράκης.

Δράμα

Το Μνημείο του Ολοκαυτώματος καλύφθηκε με συνθήματα υπέρ της Παλαιστίνης. Δεν είναι προφανώς η πρώτη φορά – ξεχωρίζει η φορά που αριστερός «ακτιβιστής» είχε φροντίσει να ανακοινώσει την βεβήλωση που πραγματοποιήθηκε λίγο μετά. Πέρα από το ανορθόγραφο σύνθημα, οι επίδοξοι ειρηνόφιλοι διέγραψαν και τα ονόματα των εβραϊκών κοινοτήτων της Δράμας, της Καβάλας, της Νέας Ορεστιάδας, του Διδυμότειχου, της Ξάνθης, της Κομοτηνής, των Σερρών και της Καβάλας που δολοφονήθηκαν από τους ναζί Γερμανούς και τους Βούλγαρους σύμμαχους τους – το τι μήνυμα ήθελαν να περάσουν το αφήνω σε εσάς.

Θεσσαλονίκη

Ημερίδα του Εβραϊκού Μουσείου αναβλήθηκε μετά από «προειδοποιήσεις φοιτητών», ενώ η Ομάδα για την Μελέτη του Ελληνικού Εβραϊσμού στο Πανεπιστήμιο Μακεδονίας έγινε δέκτης «προειδοποιήσεων». Δεν θα αναφερθώ καν στα δεκάδες γκραφίτι που γέμισαν του τοίχους της πόλης ταυτίζοντας ισραηλινούς ή/και έλληνες εβραίους με τους ναζί.

Διμοιρίες των ΜΑΤ βρέθηκαν να φρουρούν τα γραφεία της Εβραϊκής Κοινότητας και την συναγωγή πολλές φορές κατά την διάρκεια διαδηλώσεων. Το ΚΚΕ για μια ακόμη φορά αποφάσισε να καταλήγουν οι πορείες διαμαρτυρίας στο Μνημείο του Ολοκαυτώματος, (υπενθυμίζω οτι το επίσημο ΚΚΕ το είχε βανδαλίσει το 2006 κατά την διάρκεια της πρώτης διαδήλωσης από το Ολοκαύτωμα και μετά ενάντια στην εβραϊκή κοινότητα της πόλης που είχε καταλήξει στον βίαιο αποκλεισμό των γραφείων της Κοινότητας). Ξεχωρίζει η άρνηση του Συριζα να συμμετάσχει στην Εθνική Ημέρα Μνήμης Ολοκαυτώματος στις 27/1 – όχι ότι έτσι και αλλιώς συστηματικά αρνείται να παρουσιαστεί αλλά αξίζει να σημειωθεί η απύθμενη υποκρισία των τοπικών αξιωματούχων του που δεν έχουν πρόβλημα να διαφημίζουν τις «ανθρωπιστικές» εκδηλώσεις τους πάνω από τα οστά των 350.000/500.000 νεκρών εβραίων που ακόμα βρίσκονται κάτω από το Αριστοτέλειο Πανεπιστήμιο. Άλλωστε γνωρίζω για μια περίπτωση «αντιρατσιστή» τοπικού στελέχους, του οποίου το σπίτι στην Ανω Πόλη «στολίζεται» από λεηλατημένες ταφόπλακες του εβραϊκού νεκροταφείου.

Για τα αντισημιτικά κηρύγματα του τοπικού Μητροπολίτη, που διακρίνεται για την εβραιοφαγία του, αναφέρθηκα πριν. Η ειρωνία οτι τα κηρύγματα έγιναν στο Ναό του Αγίου Δημητρίου  που έχει φτιαχτεί από κλεμμένες εβραικές ταφόπλακες προφανώς δεν ήταν εμφανής στο σεβάσμιο ιερέα.

Ιωάννινα

Για πολλοστή φορά τα τελευταία χρόνια άγνωστοι έσπασαν τάφους στο εβραϊκό νεκροταφείο της πόλης στις 19/1. Το φαινόμενο είναι, πλέον, τόσο αναμενόμενο που ο πρόεδρος της Ισραηλιτικής Κοινότητας Ιωαννίνων είχε ήδη ειδοποιήσει την Αστυνομία, χωρίς όμως αυτή να λάβει μέτρα. Το εβραϊκό νεκροταφείο Ιωαννίνων έχει γίνει μόνιμος στόχος τα τελευταία χρόνια μέσα στην γενική αδιαφορία της τοπικής κοινωνίας και την πιθανή εμπλοκή των τοπικών αστυνομικών αρχών. Έκτοτε από τον Ιανουάριο μέχρι σήμερα έχουν γίνει πέντε επιθέσεις και φτάσαμε στο επίπεδο να βεβηλώνονται τα ίδια τα λείψανα με σκοτωμένα ζώα για να υπάρξει κάποια μικρή αντίδραση , ενώ οι τοπικές οργανώσεις της Νέας Δημοκρατίας διακρίθηκαν από την άρνηση τους να καταδικάσουν το γεγονός.

Αξίζει να τονίσουμε αυτή η σειρά επιθέσεων μαζί με αυτή του Ιουλίου ήταν μια από τις χειρότερες αντισημιτικές επιθέσεις των τελευταίων ετών, (στην φωτογραφία οι σπασμένοι τάφοι του Ιανουαρίου).

Κέρκυρα

Βανδαλισμοί σημειώθηκαν στην συναγωγή της πόλης. Προφανέστατα καμμία αντίδραση σε μια πόλη με μια μακριά παράδοση αντισημιτισμού, (το πογκρόμ του 1891 – το χειρότερο στην ελληνική ιστορία, η συνεργασία με τους γερμανούς στην εξαφάνιση της τοπικής εβραικής κοινότητας…).

Λάρισα

Η Λάρισα υπήρξε η πόλη στην οποία η αντισημιτική παράνοια της Αριστεράς και της Δεξιάς εκδηλώθηκε με ιδιαίτερη μανία. Κατά την διάρκεια πορείας για τις συνθήκες στις φυλακές στις 17/1 αναρχικοί και παλαιστίνιοι διαδηλωτές επιχείρησαν να βανδαλίσουν την συναγωγή της πόλης. Αυτόνομοι από συγκεκριμένη ομάδα που συμμετείχαν στην πορεία τους απέτρεψαν, παρά τις αντιδράσεις λοιπών μερών της διαδήλωσης. Η Συναγωγή χρειάστηκε και άλλες μέρες την προστασία από διμοιρίες των ΜΑΤ, ενώ συνθήματα των διαδηλωτών επαναλάμβαναν τις γνωστές κατηγορίες οτι οι εβραίοι ελέγχουν την Ελλάδα και οτι η Αστυνομία προστατεύει «τους αφέντες» της.

Την ίδια μέρα ακροδεξιές οργανώσεις συνδεδεμένες με την Χρυσή Αυγή διοργάνωσαν συγκέντρωση έξω από τον χώρο όπου είναι συγκεντρωμένη η Συναγωγή και το Εβραϊκό Σχολείο με τίτλο «Εβραίοι Δολοφόνοι. Έξω από την Λάρισα!«, (στην φωτογραφία δεξιά screenshot από νεοναζιστικό ιστότοπο που ανακοίνωνε την νεοναζιστική σύναξη – η ανάρτηση σήμερα έχει διαγραφεί). Η συγκέντρωση κατέληξε στον βανδαλισμό του μνημείου για την εξόντωση των Λαρισαίων Εβραίων. Ταυτόχρονα κυκλοφόρησαν μηνύματα για μποϋκοτάζ των εβραϊκών καταστημάτων και μηνύματα για  μαζική συμμετοχή της Χρυσής Αυγής σε διαδηλώσεις της «ΠΑΝΕΥΡΩΠΑΪΚΗ ΕΠΙΤΡΟΠΗ ΓΙΑ ΤΟΝ ΤΕΡΜΑΤΙΣΜΟ ΤΟΥ ΑΠΟΚΛΕΙΣΜΟΥ ΤΗΣ ΓΑΖΑΣ· ΣΥΝΔΕΣΜΟΣ ΕΛΛΗΝΟΠΑΛΑΙΣΤΙΑΝΙΚΗΣ ΦΙΛΙΑΣ». Ας μην ξεχνάμε οτι η Συναγωγή αποτελεί μόνιμο πέρασμα των νεοναζιστικών διαδηλώσεων της Χρυσής Αυγής μέχρι και σήμερα όπως μαθαίνουμε από την ίδια την Χρυσή Αυγή.

Δεν χρειάζεται να προσθέσω οτι η εβραϊκή κοινότητα της πόλης μετά από αυτή την συνδυασμένη επίθεση από Αριστερούς και Δεξιούς αντισημίτες αναγκάστηκε να διακόψει κάθε κοινοτική δραστηριότητα μέχρι να ηρεμήσουν τα πράγματα, ενώ αυξήθηκαν τα μέτρα προστασίας στο εβραϊκό σχολείο που βρίσκεται στην ιδια περιοχή.

Επιμύθιο

Είναι αδαής ή ανενημέρωτος ή κακόβουλος αυτός που πιστεύει οτι στην Ελλάδα δεν υπάρχει αντισημιτισμός και οτι οι έλληνες έχουμε κάνει το εμβόλιο κατά του ρατσισμού. Αυτό αφορά είτε πιθανούς ψηφοφόρους του ΛΑΟΣ, είτε υποψηφίους των Ο-Π που πιστεύουν οτι η ζωή των εβραίων στην Ελλάδα «δεν επηρεάζεται βαθύτερα» και τα κίνητρα της αντισημιτικής βίας βασίζονται στην «πολιτική του Ισραήλ».

Πολύ χειρότερα γεγονότα συνέβησαν αλλού στην Ευρώπη όπως στην Ολλανδία, Γαλλία, Μεγάλη Βρετανία – η Ελλάδα δεν υπήρξε μοναδική περίπτωση. Πουθενά όμως δεν υπήρξε μια τέτοια εκκωφαντική απουσία αντιδράσεων από την κοινωνία και από τον πολιτικό κόσμο. Ευχαριστώ το Παρατηρητήριο των Συμφωνιών του Ελσινκι, τους terminal119 που υπήρξαν οι μόνοι που καταδίκασαν αυτές τις ενέργειες. Ολους τους υπόλοιπους τους ευχαριστώ για το διεθνιστικό τους ενδιαφέρον – τα εκατομμύρια των διαδηλώσεων για τις σφαγές των Κούρδων στο Ιράκ του Σαντάμ, τις σφαγές εκατοντάδων χιλιάδων μαύρων χριστιανών από άραβες μουσουλμάνους στο Νταρφούρ, την γενοκτονία στην Ρουάντα ή τις μαζικές σφαγές αλβανών από τους σέρβους αδερφούς στην γειτονιά μας σε Κόσοβο και Βοσνία ή ακόμα πιο πρόσφατα με τους Ταμίλ αποτελούν αποκαλυπτικές των κινήτρων τους πίσω από το όψιμο ενδιαφέρον τους.

Είναι γελοίοι και βαθύτατα υποκριτές αυτοί που ξέρουν να μιλάνε για καημένους επαγγελματίες αντιρατσιστές που δεν μπορούν να επικρίνουν το Ισραήλ χωρίς να κατηγορηθούν για αντισημιτισμό, ενώ στην πραγματικότητα κρατούν το στόμα τους ερμητικά κλειστό για τα όργια που συμβαίνουν στην ίδια τους την χώρα κάθε φορά που φουντώνει η κατάσταση στην Μέση Ανατολή. Οτι κάθε μέρα υπάρχουν δεκάδες άρθρα και τηλεοπτικές εκπομπές για τα δικαιώματα των παλαιστινίων, ενώ το γεγονός οτι στα Ιωάννινα κανείς δεν αισθάνεται ασφαλής για την τύχη των λείψανων της οικογένειας του – κατά τα άλλα ελλήνων πολιτών οι οποίοι είναι χρήσιμοι για φόρους, στρατό και για να λέμε πόσο ανεκτική είναι η χώρα μας – δεν ακούστηκε κουβέντα. Για να μην μιλήσω για την κατάσταση στην Θεσσαλονίκη με την οποία θα ασχοληθώ εκτενώς φέτος.

ΥΓ. Ξεχωρίζω την ανάρτηση του doctor που μόνο για φιλο-ισραηλινός δε μπορεί να κατηγορηθεί – με εκφράζει απόλυτα. Οσο για τους επαγγελματίες αντιφασίστες της Αριστεράς ξεχωρίζω τα σχόλια της antifa-area η οποία είναι ενδεικτική του αντιεξουσιαστικού/αριστερού αντισημιτισμού – δείτε και το About Us του ιστολογίου ενδεικτικό της πνευματικής τους ένδειας που ούτε να αντιγράψει παπαγαλία ένα κείμενο δεν είναι ικανή. Riot Police (MAT) guarding synagogues, meetings of anxious parents in Jewish schools – while synagogues, cemeteries and monuments became targets of vandalism and arson. This was the picture that Greek Jewry presented in December and January when the totality of the greek society decided that the best way to support the “champions of Hamas” (as infamous anti-Semitic newspaper Avriani put it, 29/12/08) was to burst against fellow greek citizens born with the wrong religion

Violent antisemitic incidents occurred in 9 greek cities: Athens, Salonica, Larissa, Volos, Ioannina, Corfu but also in judenrein cities such as Komotini, Veria, Drama. Nationwide we saw outrageous statements on “blood craving jews» by Extreme-Right leader Y.Karatzaferis, while Leftist leaders went overboard in condemning Israel but downright refused to condemn antisemitic incidents in their own home; especially their utilitarian reference to the Holocaust would have been tragic if not comic in front of their downright refusal to join the State Holocaust Memorial Day later in the month as they usually do. Members of the Greek Church like Metrop.of Piraeus Serafim spoke of «zionist monsters with sharp claws» being aided by “massonic lodges”. Metrop.of Salonica Anthimos, (already famous for other anti-jewish statements), said that Jews are being punished for killing Jesus Christ; the “Christ-Killer” card was also played by newspaper frontpages like Vradini speaking of “Crucifixion” and “Ponzio Pilates”.  I won’t even mention the paranoid  antisemitic Christian Orthodox newspapers like Orthodoxos Tipos who frontlined «Zionists and Massons support the slaughtering» but I will limit myself to the infamous antisemitic newspaper Avriani which spoke of American Jews stealing the money and causing the world economic crisis and warned us of American Jews plotting to set off WW3 (!!!) <photos in the left> while also frontlining “Holocaust”. Let’s not forget newspapers like Apogevmatini which frontlined «Holocaust» which had already accused Israelis of harvesting Palestinian organs long before the swedes ever discovering the rumor and all the other newspapers which refused to talk about the wave of antisemitic hatred that swept through Greece.

The Press and the TV did their best to exasperate the climate – a known liberal radio presenter, Jimmy Panousis, said it plainly: «There are no good jews» and that Jews are pigs and murderers but fortunately their days are numbered. But let’s limit ourselves to the tangible aspects of the racist nightmare that swept Greece and included Far Right, Far Left and neonazi groups in Greece.

Athens

Antisemitic graffiti appeared in many streets; in the photo we can see written on the walls of the Jewish Cemetery: «Israelites Jews Murderers». In case the clearly religious aspect of the hatred went unnoticed, the perpetrators added «Jews» probably because they confused «Israelites» with «Israelis».

Among the various antiwar protests, the one of neonazi group Chrissi Avgi gains prominence where «Freedom to Palestine» was combined with «Ax and fire to the jewish dogs» and «Jews, Pigs, Murderers of nations», (Ι have the video of the march – usually they face leftist demonstrators but it appears that this time they were in agreement). Members of the neonazi group were interviewed by national TV stations like Mega TV and why shouldn’t they, Extreme-Right political parties managed to gather 11% in Athens in the recent elections.

Veria

Unknown perpetrators attempted to set on fire the synagogue of the city in the center of Veria, in the old Jewish Quarter named Barbouta – fortunately only the door and the patio suffered damage. Ironically a year ago I was writing about blood libel accusations from trash-TV star and successful author Ioannis Fourakis who accused Jews of human sacrifices during the search of hate-crime victim Alex Mechisvili in the Barbouta district.

Volos

"The State of Israel is murdering! What side are you on?"

The Jewish Community of Volos was targeted by leftist protesters which sprayed graffiti on the exterior wall of the synagogue and against the community itself on 31/12 demanding greek citizens apologizing for what is happening in a third country and asking for loyalty credentials in the place they go to worship;  the synagogue remained closed and services were suspended indefinitely.

The leftist organization Antiexousiastiki Kinisi, which appeared responsible for the act, denied in a statement any involvement after presenting Greek Jews almost as Israelis in exile when drawing a parallel with what the situation of the «turkish» minority of Western Thrace.

Drama

The Holocaust Monument was vandalized with pro-Palestinian graffiti. Of course it wasn’t the first time happening, with the most famous vandalism being the one by a leftist activist some years ago who announced his intentions amidst general indifference to the act he proceeded to do. Besides the wrong spelling the would-be peace activists also erased the names of the murdered, by the nazi Germans and their Bulgarian allies, Jewish Communities of Serres, Drama, Kavala, Nea Orestiada, Didymoteicho, Xanthi, Komotini. What was their message I leave it up to you to interpret.

Salonika

A seminar of the Jewish Museum was postponed after «warnings» of students, while a meeting of the Study Group for Greek Jewry also received «warnings». I won’t even comment on the tenths of graffiti appearing all over the city equating the Greeks Jews and/or Israelis to the Nazis.

Riot Police (MAT) were often found guarding the offices of the local community and Synagogue. The greek Communist Party once again decided to end its protests in the Holocaust Memorial that had vandalized in 2006, (only to top that with a demonstration against the Salonican Jews themselves the following day ending in the blockade of the communal offices), while leftist parliamentary party Sy.Riz.A. declined to participate in the Holocaust Memorial Day, as it has done frequently the past years. I won’t comment on the bottomless hypocrisy of the local party officials which on the other hand have no problem hosting their «antiwar» rallies on the University which lies on top of the remains of 350.000/500.000 Jews which were never removed from the destroyed, by Greek Authorities during the Holocaust, Jewish Cemetery of Thessaloniki. Indicative is the case of an «anti-racism» activist whose house in Ano Poli district is «adorned» with looted Jewish gravestones.

We have already mentioned above of the antisemitic sermons of the local Metropolite. The irony that the sermon took place in the St.Demetrious Church which is constructed by looted Jewish gravestones was probably lost on the elder priest.

Ioannina

Broken tombs in January

For yet another time the local Jewish Cemetery was vandalized and some tombs were broken on 19/1. These incidents are so common that the president of the community had already warned the Police which declined from taking preventive measures. The Jewish cemetery in Ioannina is a permanent target of extreme-Right vandalism the past years amids the general indifference of the local society and suspicions for possible local Police involvement in the vandalisms. Since January we have had 5 attacks and we’ve reached a level of the remains themselves being desecrated with smashed animals to have any kind of reaction, while the local organization of ruling conservative party Nea Dimokratia refused categorically to condemn the incident.

It’s worthy to point out that these attacks, together with the one of July are probably the worst antisemitic incidents in recent years, (in the photo the broken graves of January).

Corfu

The city Synagogue was vandalized. Of course there were no reactions in an island with a strong antisemitic tradition, (the 1891 pogrom – worst in greek history, local cooperation with the Germans during the Holocaust etc).

Larissa

The town in which the antisemitic madness of both Left and Right was emblematic. During a protest on 1/17 anarchists and Palestinians tried to vandalize the Synagogue. Other autonomous protesters from a specific group managed to stop them despite the general resentment. Riot Police protected the Synagogue for several days, while protesters suggested that Jews rule Greece and thus the Police was protecting «it’s masters».

The same day FarRight and neonazi groups linked with Chrissi Avghi also held a protest near  the Synagogue and the Jewish Elementary School; the main theme was «Jewish Murderers – Get out of Larissa».  <screenshot of the invitation in the left – they have removed any trace since> The protest resulted in vandalizing of the Holocaust Monument for the  murdered Jews of Larissa.  Contemporaneously messages circulated calling on the boycotting of Jewish shops and the participation of Chrissi Avghi in protests of the «Paneuropean Comittee on ending the Gaza boycott – GreekPalestian Friendship committee«. Let’s not forget that still today neonazi marches do not fail to pass in front of the Synagogue and shout antisemitic slogans.

Needless to add that the Jewish Community of Larissa after these combined attacks by Leftist and Rightist antisemites was forced to suspend all communal activities until things calmed down, while security measures were increased in the Jewish School which is found in the same area.

Aftermath

He is either ignorant or not-informed or malicious anyone who thinks that in Greece there is no antisemitism and greeks have taken the immunization shot against racism. This includes the possible voters of antisemitic political party LàOS and the Green’s candidates who think the life of Greek Jews «is not deeply affected» and the motives of antisemitic violence are based «on the policy of Israel».

Much worse happened in Europe like the Netherlands, France or Great Britain – Greece was neither an isolated case, nor would it qualify as the worse offender. Still, nowhere in the world did we see such a deafening lack of reactions by the greek political parties and society in general. I would like to thank Helsinki Monitor, terminal119 for they were the only ones to condemn these acts. Concluding I would like to thank everyone else for the famous greek international solidarity – the innumerable protests for the slaughter of Kurds in Saddam’s Iraq, the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of black christians by muslim arabs in Darfur, the genocide in Rwanda or the mass murders of albanians by our serb brothers in our own back yard or even more recently for the Tamil massacres are immensely revealing of the real motives behind their interest.

I would also like to add that they are ludicrous and deeply hypocritical those who cry over poor professional antiracism activists in Greece who cannot judge Israel without being accused of antisemitism, while they keep their mouths hermetically shut over the orgies that take place in their own country every time the situation in the Middle East gets heated. That every single day there were articles and TV shows on the Palestinian rights while on the fact that in Ioannina no one is was feeling secure even for the fate of the remains of their loved ones – greek citizens useful for taxes, the army and saying how tolerant Greece is – wasn’t being said anything.

Εξέχον μέλος της Ισραηλιτικής Κοινότητας Θεσσαλονίκης, ο Γιομτώβ Γιακοέλ υπήρξε για 20 χρόνια νομικός της σύμβουλος και ασχολήθηκε με την πολιτική σε κοινοτικό και εθνικό επίπεδο. Και ο ίδιος εκτοπίσθηκε και δούλεψε στα ζοντερκομάντο, (την μεταφορά των πτωμάτων από τους θαλάμους αερίων στα κρεματόρια) – εκτελέσθηκε τον Απρίλιο του 1944.

Γενικά

Η Εβραϊκή θρησκεία αναγνωρίζει περισσότερες από μια Πρωτοχρονιές – άλλη είναι η θρησκευτική, άλλη είναι των δένδρων και άλλη η πολιτική. Ουσιαστικά όμως αυτή που ορίζεται σαν η «κανονική» Εβραϊκή Πρωτοχρονιά, η γιορτή στην οποία αλλάζει η ημερομηνία του χρόνου είναι το Ρος Ασσανά, (ή αλλιώς Ρος Ασανά/Ροσς Ασσανά). Το όνομα της γιορτής στην κυριολεξία σημαίνει Rosh (κεφαλή) Ha (του) Shana (χρόνου) και φέτος ξεκινάει κατά την δύση του ήλιου την Δευτέρα 29 Σεπτεμβρίου 2008 μέχρι δύση του ηλίου της Τρίτης 30 Σεπτεμβρίου, ενώ φέτος μπαίνουμε αισίως στο 5769 A.M.

Γιατί ξεκινάμε στη δύση του ήλιου; Γιατί η ημέρα στο εβραϊκό ημερολόγιο ξεκινά από την δύση του ηλίου και διαρκεί μέχρι την δύση της επομένης, (σύμφωνα με την Γέννεση «και έγινεν εσπέρα και έγινε πρωί, ημέρα πρώτη»). Τυπικά ξεκινά όταν 3 αστέρια εμφανίζονται στον ουρανό αλλά πρακτικά ορίζεται μόνο από την δύση του ηλίου – φέτος στην Ελλάδα πέφτει στις 18.54 το απόγευμα της 29/9. Ταυτόχρονα είναι και η πρώτη ημέρα του μήνα Τισρί.

Το Ρος Ασσανά είναι αναπόσπαστα δεμένο με το Γιομ Κιππούρ, (Ημέρα Εξιλέωσης – η ιερότερη γιορτή του Ιουδαϊσμού) και αποτελούν τις λεγόμενες Υψηλές Εορτές, ενώ οι ημέρες μεταξύ Ρος Ασσανά και Κιππούρ ονομάζονται Γιαμίμ Νοραϊμ (Ημέρες του Δέους) λόγω του υψηλού βαθμού θρησκευτικότητας τους.

Metropolite Anthimos and his «irrefutable archives»

Metropolite of Thessaloniki, His Holiness Anthimos has reached national prominence due to his adamant positions in national issues and in specific the name dispute with the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia. He also expressed his fierce opposition to the decision of the Greek Government to abolish the voice «religion» in national greek identity cards; he held a protagonist role in the staging of massive protests while the current ArchBishop of Greece Ieronimos, then only a Metropolite, was much more hesitant to participate in the protests.

During a recent congress on the Holocaust which took place in Thessaloniki diverse opinions were voiced stating that while aid to the Jewish Greeks is well documented, the story of local collaborators and the destiny of Jewish properties remains vague. His Holiness wrote a letter to the newspaper that stated that the Metropolite of Thessaloniki Yennadios was declared as Just by Yad Vassem and denied any form of local collaboration with the nazi Germany or that the Church of Thessaloniki benefited by jewish property. He ended the letter by stating:
«Never in so many years, from the time after the war, has any charge been brought forward on the looting of property belonging to Jewish Greeks by the Christian Greeks. The established historical truth is this regarding the Jews of Thessaloniki and the archives of our Holy Metropolis are irrefutable.»

Remembering

Remember… That is the imperative that one finds in the writings of people who took part in the Holocaust/Shoah as witnesses and involuntary victims. Remember…is what is repeated each year when the ceremonies for the Shoah take place or when the monster of hate rises to threaten jews and non-jews alike.

Still the imperative “remember” assumes different meanings for the different people who utter it. This is fairly obvious in the different ways society deals with the Day of Remembrance. Right-wing politics flock to show that despite their friends, their sayings and their stands they still are not “jew haters”. Left wing politics fail to even show up, since the jews are the new “fascists” to compete against. The Institutions simply see it as a burden to bring forward in the less obvious way possible, lest be accused in succumbing to the jews. The Media simply broadcast the same old archives from foreign documentaries and deal with it the same way they deal with the tsunami, a bad thing but that happened far-far away to “others”. The rest of the Society doesn’t know or care and frankly, seen how Politics, Institutions and Media deal with the Day, they have their fair share of excuses.

On the other hand I grew up in a house where no one ever had to tell me to remember. For me the Holocaust was strange tales about a place far-far away the grownups in my house were involved in. The only tangible aspect of these stories were the blue numbers tattooed on their arms. I used to be so stupefied by these numbers for they transformed a tale into a reality which I could touch, scrutinize and fantasize upon. I was just a kid but it was fairly obvious that something had indeed happened and these numbers told of a story which I could only get glimpses and half truths from its comprehensibly reluctant narrators. Still to them it was not the historical event that later became the Holocaust; to them it was simply “τα στρατόπεδα”/“the camps” were they had gone but even if they wanted they could never truly shed from them since the mark of the camps was not only in their minds but on their physical shelves. This number, hard as they might have tried should they have wanted, could not be erased and hard as I might have tried should have I wanted could not be forgotten.

At that time I didn’t have the faintest idea how different the war had been upon them. I remember that I used to harass them regularly to have them tell me stories which were adapted to suit a 5 year old and which invariably fascinated him. From these stories I can only remember parts that I, as a small pampered kid, could understand remotely: having to rise with shouts – getting beaten – being hungry. Hell, I remember that hearing “Raus” and “Schnell” seemed extraordinarily funny and I repeated them same way today a kid will parrot a phrase from the telly.

As I grew up my perception of the Holocaust changed and its memory was perpetuated through the Absence than through the Presence. It was no longer necessary to see the numbers on the arms or hear stories to remember; it was enough to see what was missing. There were no stories that passed from generation to generation, no relatives to visit, any family relics or photos. When I was little this absence didn’t weigh on me since I didn’t actually realize it and the immediate present was just enough. As I grew up, the natural urge we all have to discover our past and make bonds with it also kept growing only to find itself bump against an invisible wall which defined Before and After. One could, through research, get to know more about what had happened 500 years ago to his family than know more about the generation immediately prior to the Holocaust. The Absence was what defined the Holocaust and the generations past it; people focalizing on this specific moment trying to secure little threads of memories which could be extricated from the WW2 maelstrom. In my family a single photo whose members but one were dead by 1943, reconstituted from the pieces it was torn, is the sole remainder of all the generations that passed before; it struggles to rise up to the immense role of filling the Absence but it isn’t the only one that defines the past – the tangible absence of all the others is a monolith to whom this humble photo has to confront with.

Remembering for me is not only a token of respect to those who were murdered, gassed and burned. It is a vital need to fill up the void, a deep drive to give meaning to all those who lived before me and found their entire lives clinging upon a meager photo before fading in the oblivion. And if the Holocaust physically erased thousands of persons it managed to go even past the Holocaust generation and burn itself unto the generations that were to come by eliminating their Past and through the Absence it created make it a part of their life in a painfully contemporary way.

So I must admit I lied when I said I keep the memory vivid in me; I’ve never had to remember because the cataclysm the Holocaust had been, never actually left me.

Jews and the Twin Towers by tuki8eblom

I would be ungrateful if I didn’t admit that through this site I’ve had the chance to be wonderfully surprised by many people who seem to have the sheer recklessness to go against the mainstream views here in Greece. One of these people is touki8eblom, affectionately known as touki.

On this particular occasion the article that grasped my attention was a small but well documented essay on the widely spread myth that jews, (or Mossad, the israeli Secret Service), were responsible for 9/11. The rumor has it that 2-3-4-5.000 jews working in the World Trade Center were «alerted» and failed to show up that day for work; ergo jews knew about it or even organised it.

The Greek Justice (?)

Books questioning the Shoah or downright racist are free to circulate and enjoy a high popularity even in mainstream bookshops. This includes books that are proven literary forgeries like the infamous «The Protocols of the Elders of Zion» that do not only circulate freely but are fiercely defended by the totality of the greek publishers and society.

So when well known nazi-admirer and TV figure Mr.Plevris published a book called «Jews, the whole truth» where he openly expressed his admiration for Hitler there was no shock. But what really distinguished him was not only his questioning of the Shoah but his open support for the extermination of the jews which, as far as he was concerned, it should have been more effective. Or else to put it in his own words:
«unfortunately the Nazis chose to move the Jews away from Europe, when in my opinion, they should have killed them, because this is the behavior towards those who desire world domination.»

P. 742: ‘That’s what Jews want. It’s the only thing they understand: an execution squad within 24 hours’
P. 269: ‘Every Greek, every person who is aware of the subversion carried out by Jewish Zionism, should act on his own as an individual and mobilize himself against Jews. Initially he needs to do the following:…
…Wherever intervention by Jews is noted he should foil it by denouncing it and then take whatever action is necessary.
P. 778: ‘The only way Jews can find salvation is for them to stop dreaming of ruling the world… Otherwise their annihilation will be complete and for all. At most a few thousand will remain and they will snip their little willies and wait for their Jehovah’.
P. 852: ‘Hitler was blamed for something that did not actually take place. Later the history of humanity will blame him for not ridding Europe of the Jews, though he could have… My dear Jews, I do not ask you to suffer all the things that your holy books tell you that we should suffer from you… You are criminals because that is what your religion has taught you to be. You are murderers because crime is instilled in you from an early age. Therefore we others have the right to deal with you. And that is what we will do’.

Phrases like this forced a group of greek christians and greek jews to file a complaint against him for advocating racist violence. A law suit which was accepted as legitimate by an Athens Appeals Judicial Council because “The appellant’s argument that his writings are an expression of opinion is unfounded because in fact he is inciting the readership, especially the Greek one, to mobilize against Jews (that is to hate, discriminate against, or use violence against them), whom the appellant characterizes indiscriminately as subhuman, deserving extinction, enemies of the Greek people and of Europe in general, praising at the same time the Nazis and SS’s criminal actions against the Jews.”

One thing that Greek Jewry and the Human Rights Organizations did not certainly expect was how the trial turned into a true farce. A court openly anti-jewish which was not only sympathetic to the defendant but downright hostile towards the witnesses for the prosecution. A court which rejected all greek jewish witnesses as not having legal interest in the case, as if it concerned some uncertain entity and not people in blood and flesh! A court who’s Prosecutor was so favorable to Plevris that he arrived to declare as «scientific work» his book! Even when this scandal came to light through a newspaper article, a complete silence roared deafeningly since no political party, public figure or academic rose to protest agaist the state of the Greek Justice.

What follows is the english translation of the bulletin by the Greek Helsinki Monitor, a greek NGO for human rights, which was actively involved in the law suit. Among else it includes selected excerpts from the trial which document the prejudice of the judges who arrived to defend themselves the defendant instead of letting his lawyers!

It is noteworthy, though it hardly appears surprising, the fact that the populist, antisemitic party of LAOS appeared closely linked to this book. LAOS deputy Adonis Georgiadis openly praised the book in various TV shows while the son of Plevris was also elected as a deputy for the LAOS party, though later LAOS tried to disassociate itself from the «dangerous» Plevris. Bigotry in Greece and World, a survey

In Jaywalker’s blog I happened to run on a post he did on a university study on bigotry; the post was so interesting that I decided to steal his find and post about it also here – no hard feelings I hope. :)

Vani K Borooah from the University of Ulster and John Mangan from the University of Queensland were the key authors in this rather interesting study. The study included 23 countries from the so called Western World; practically Europe, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. The key question was:

“Would you like to have a person from this group as your neighbour?”

The 5 groups were: of a different race, muslims, jews, immigrants or foreign workers and homosexuals. The study didn’t only concentrate on this question but went on to analyse how bigotry was distributed between groups, how it related to the country in question, to political beliefs, unhapiness and other indices.

The results were unsettling both for the Western World and Greece. Copying the findings of the study:

The highest proportion of bigoted persons (bigotry count ratio) was in Northern Ireland and Greece – where, respectively, 44 and 43 percent of respondents did not want persons from at least one of the five groups as their neighbours – and the lowest proportion of bigoted persons was in Sweden (13 percent), Iceland (18 percent), Canada (22 percent), and Denmark (22 percent).

The value of the bigotry gap ratio – the mean, percentage amount by which the bigotry scores of all the persons was above the bigotry line (z=1) – was also highest for Greece (51 percent) and Northern Ireland (50 percent): not only did these countries have a high proportion of bigoted persons, bigots in these countries were, on average, more bigoted than in countries.

Greece scored second worse for people from a different race, universally worse for muslims, second worse for jews (with Spain being surprisingly first), 4th worse for immigrants and 4th worse for homosexuals. The troubling fact was that, while countries usually had some groups that they disliked in particular, Greece scored high in bigotry in all 5 groups; practicaly sharing a first place with Northern Ireland if we take into account all indices. Practically almost 1 out of 2 people in Greece would not like as a neighbour, at least, one of the aforementioned groups, (43.2% to be exact). Also the greek population of bigots is the most bigotted one on the whole western world.

Even after controlling for personal characteristics, the likelihood of a person being bigoted depended on the country in which he/she lived. With Northern Ireland as the residual country, and after controlling for personal characteristics, persons who lived in Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Iceland, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Sweden, and the USA were less likely to be bigoted (and strongly bigoted) – and persons who lived in Greece were more likely to be bigoted (and strongly bigoted) – than those living in Northern Ireland. The country effect for the other countries was not significantly different from zero.

What I didn’t expect for Greece was such a high degree of homophobia, equally high with the very catholic Italy and Ireland. I didn’t also expect such a high percentage for muslims but I imagine that the equation muslim=turk still works against muslim acceptance. At least immigrants were the most accepted from all groups, though still the rate of rejection was extremely high. As far as jews are concerned there weren’t any surprises with Greece being twice as judeophobic, as the media of the Western World. Interestingly enough, this was also the group were Greece differed more from the western media, scoring 97% more.

To tell the truth I feel that real percentages must be higher. The question was fairly straight-forward and at least some people must have dodged answering in a negative way against some groups, as not to appear racist. I doubt that this is the case in Greece as people still do not actually think that racist behaviors are socially unacceptable – I’m trying this moment to back this sensation with some tangible data.

Anyway still quite disturbing and as far as jewish presence is concerned verifies what we’ve been saying insofar. I’m even more troubled if I think that the paper didn’t included Roma; I tremble when I think what the percentages would be in that case. :(
